Chapter 22 - MY GOLDDDDD !!!

In the heart of the City of Void, amid pulsating energy and whispering echoes of ancient wisdom, a transformation was taking place.

Brandon could perceive the intricate, multifaceted progression that the City of Void had to traverse, each detail as precise as the facets on a diamond.

His eyes clenched shut, the sheer brilliance of the insight momentarily blinding him to all else.

He could see the complex hierarchy of the city's requirements, feel the pulse of his people's loyalty, their needs and their strengths.

His pulse raced in harmony with the powerful vibrations emanating from the Heart of Civilization.

The torrent of information didn't merely flow through him, it was him, as if he'd become the city, its inhabitants, their shared destiny, their shared fate.

And then, as swiftly as the torrent had arrived, it stilled.

He opened his eyes to witness an extraordinary sight.

The Heart of Civilization, previously a powerful, pulsating orb, had morphed before his very eyes.

In its place, a spectral kitten of breathtaking beauty lay in the air, suspended as though gravity held no claim on it.

Its tiny form was wrought of ethereal, translucent light, casting an iridescent spectrum of colors that filled the room.

Its eyes were pools of ancient wisdom, a millennium of understanding shimmering within the depths of its gaze.

The spectral feline was simultaneously tangible yet incorporeal, as if woven from the very fabric of the universe.

It pawed playfully at unseen entities, every movement sending ripples of light cascading across the room.

Each ripple echoed the heartbeat of the city, the pulse of its people, their shared aspirations, and collective might.

Awe blossomed in Brandon's chest as he took in the enchanting sight.

A chuckle of disbelief escaped his lips, the sound bouncing around the room, shattering the silence.

"You're the Heart of Civilization?"

His voice was hushed, barely louder than a whisper.

The kitten blinked at him, a light paw reaching out to bat at an unseen speck in the air before it turned its attention back to Brandon.

Its eyes held an intelligence and awareness that left no room for doubt.

Brandon felt a warmth spread in his chest, a fondness that caught him off guard.

He slowly extended his hand towards the creature,

"I guess this makes you my responsibility then, huh?"

He wasn't merely talking to a cat.

He was addressing the spirit of his city, the essence of its people, their shared dreams and ambitions.

As his fingers gently grazed the spectral fur of the kitten, a ripple of warmth spread through him, spiraling outwards in concentric circles of pure acceptance.

This connection was no ordinary tie – It was a bond, a connection binding him to the city and its people in a way nothing else ever could.

The spectral kitten mewed in response, a soothing lullaby that filled the room,

"Meow~"

"I'll take that as a yes."

In an unexpected but graceful flurry of motion, the translucent kitten leapt from its hovering position, arching through the air.

It soared around Brandon, its ethereal form a streak of dazzling iridescence looping in wide arcs before it gently landed on his broad shoulders.

The kitten was weightless, its existence on his shoulders only apparent by the slight tickling sensation of its soft, spectral fur against his neck.

Brandon chuckled as he ran a careful hand along the kitten's back.

With a delighted purr that thrummed through the room, the spectral kitten's tiny, ethereal tongue peeked out to lick its translucent paw.

It then rubbed its luminous head against Brandon's cheek, and an unexpected thought shimmered into his mind.

'Gold? Me… Want…"

A soft smile warmed Brandon's face.

He twisted the gold ring off his index finger and offered it to the little creature.

The spectral kitten stuck out its ethereal tongue and gave it a curious lick before making a face and promptly spitting a few times.

Its beady eyes, filled with adorable dismay, looked up at Brandon pitifully.

It then started shaking its head …

Brandon's laughter reverberated around the room as he affectionately patted its head.

"Gold? Hahaha, you're in luck. There's no one with more! Come..."

With a quick leap, the spectral kitten landed on top of Brandon's head, nestling comfortably within his thick hair, purring contentedly.

Brandon crossed the room, extending a hand towards a wall.

Biometric sensors awoke, casting a blue glow that pulsed with the kitten's purring.

With a low hum, a hidden passageway was revealed, leading towards a short flight of steps that terminated at a massive, vault-like door.

Unlike most of the Void Fortress, this was old-school.

No fancy technology here; it was a monument to the manual systems of the past.

He spun the line of 10 rotary combination locks, each click resonating in the silent room.

A final turn of the imposing wheel, and the vault door swung open with a resonating groan, revealing its precious content.

Stepping into the vault, Brandon's eyes immediately landed on the metallic rod piercing the heart of the room.

He anticipated a welcoming sight, gold bullions that gleamed with familiar richness, a testament to the last vestiges of his billion-dollar inheritance.

Instead, he was met with an eerie sight that sucked the breath from his lungs.

Before him sprawled an undulating terrain of light-bronze metallic sludge, they were duller than gold yet speckled with iridescent glimmers.

Melted and resolidified, the once neatly stacked gold bullions now lay as lifeless mounds, a shocking caricature of their former glory.

The normally composed Brandon felt his knees buckle, his voice barely a rasp, a stark echo of his shock.

"My...gold bullions...What… what… happened?"

The words tumbled out, each syllable steeped in disbelief.

His heart clenched, a vice-like grip that rendered him breathless.
