William sensed that whatever was burdening Isabella had deep roots, probably tied to a past he knew little about. Whenever he'd cautiously broach the topic, her face would cloud over and she'd change the subject. He never pressed her, always giving her the space she seemed to need.
They stayed wrapped in their silent embrace for a few minutes longer, simply soaking in each other's presence. Finally, feeling that she'd somewhat regained her composure, William gently pulled back and used his thumb to wipe away the last traces of her tears. He looked into her eyes, trying to find a clue to the puzzle of her emotions. "What's bothering you? You look really upset," he asked softly, his voice tinged with genuine concern.
