Chereads / Two Sides Of The Same Coin / Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

A few days had passed and Samuele had been tasked with another quest. He could tell that he was looking forward to this time.

He was now facing the portal creatures, giant rats. These were much tougher than the goblins, but they were still weak enough for him. Although it may not have seemed like it, a few levels made a difference in battle. Going from level 1 to level 9 was an exponential increase in strength and agility.

And now...

[CONGRATULATIONS!]

YOU LEVELED UP!

LEVEL: 10

'Yes!" exulted Samuele mentally.

[WARNING!]

YOU WILL NOW BE ASSIGNED A STARTING CLASS THAT WILL BE CHOSEN ACCORDING TO YOUR FIGHTING STYLE.

PLEASE WAIT.

Samuele thought for a moment about the class he would be assigned.

'I guess warrior, or thief.' Indeed, there were no other classes that would have suited him better.

The healer class would not have allowed him to be in the line of attack. Instead, he would have had to stay in the rear to stay safe and allow himself to be able to heal his comrades should the need arise.

The other class, the mage, did not suit him for the simple reason that he did not like to attack from a distance. Sure, there was less danger than a class that required close combat, but he felt more pleasure in attacking with a sword. Feeling with his hands that the blow had gone in a way cheered him up.

If anyone could have listened to his thoughts at that moment, they would certainly have taken him for a psychopath and sent him to the asylum. Not that he wouldn't have understood that. He was also worrying about his own thoughts.

[WARNING!]

YOUR CLASS HAS BEEN CHOSEN!

[CONGRATULATIONS!]

YOU HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED THE MAGE CLASS!

YOU NOW HAVE MANA POINTS AVAILABLE TO USE MAGICS.

'What the hell!' Was the system making fun of him? It was as if it had listened to his thoughts and decided to screw with him a little.

'As if all this time it hadn't already been doing that,' he thought bitterly inwardly. Ever since he awakened the System, it seemed as if it had put him on its blacklist. Everything that had happened to him so far was also because of him.

He had forgotten nothing. The level limit, the orcs, and now even a class that did NOT fit his fighting style at all. Why? Had he wronged someone in his previous life and karma, in the form of System, was now taking revenge?

Samuele would never know. He decided to open the status screen.

{PROFILE}

NAME: SAMUELE RUA     LEVEL: 10

TITLE: ADVENTURER

CLASS: MAGE

HP: 2100

MP: 90

{STATISTICS}

STRENGTH: 10      SENSES: 10

INTELLIGENCE: 12   AGILITY: 10

VITALITY: 10        STAMINA: 10

Looking at his title, he was now no longer 'Newbie'. It was as if he had come of age for the System. He had become for all intents and purposes an Adventurer.

In fact, from now on, the portals he would face, precisely those beyond level 10, would have bosses within them that he had to beat in order to complete quests.

It was as if until now Samuele had only been training. Or rather, as if the System had taught him the basics. These low-level portals served only to prepare the Adventurers, those whom the System defined as such by their titles, for much more complex quests.

{TITLE: ADVENTURER}

[INFORMATION!]

THIS TITLE ALLOWS YOU TO BE ABLE TO TALK TO NON-HOSTILE CREATURES FROM OTHER WORLDS.

In fact, Adventurers were sometimes forced to talk to the inhabitants of other worlds in order to find out more about their quest. In the case of the higher level portals, these did not lead Adventurers straight into a cave that only allowed advancement, but rather led into very large, explorable areas. Without help from those who lived in those areas, it would have taken a long time to be able to figure out which direction to go in order to complete quests.

This title was much more useful than people thought.

Looking further down, he also noticed how the statistics had changed. The System sent him another message with the usual little bell warning.

[WARNING!]

FROM NOW ON, YOUR STATS WILL ADVANCE ACCORDING TO YOUR FIGHTING STYLE.

Samuele, during his search for information when he obtained the System, had also discovered this, so he knew what it meant.

Simply put, if he used magic a lot, then it would mainly increase the intelligence statistic. If he used swords for fighting, then both strength and agility would be increased. If he relied a lot on his stamina, then stamina would be increased, and so on.

It was as if the System was doing everything to make the Awakened Ones comfortable. It was giving them maximum freedom.

Now that he thought about it, who was forcing him to stay in the back and attack from a distance with spells? He could continue doing what he always did. Class was just something the System gave only to advance certain stats faster and give certain abilities of that particular class.

With the Wizard Class certainly he would have skills that would fit his class, but there was nothing to stop him from also attacking by sword and thus increasing other statistics that did not determine his class in any way.

Speaking of skills, in fact.

[CONGRATULATIONS!]

YOU GOT "PASSIVE SKILL: ELEMENTAL RESISTANCE!"

[INFORMATION!]

REDUCES THE DAMAGE TAKEN BY ALL MAGIC ELEMENTS BY 20%.

'It's not a completely bad thing to have the wizard class.' Certainly, having a class like warrior or thief would have quickly increased other stats that he was more interested in, but even so he could still increase them.

'The System doesn't hate me completely, it seems.' He thought with a small wry smile.

Another little bell from the System rang out.

'Again?'

[WARNING!]

YOU HAVE OBTAINED "UNIQUE ABILITY: HEIR OF LIGHT!"

Samuele raised a curious eyebrow. 'What is a unique ability?

[INFORMATION!]

THE LIGHT KNOWS YOU AND APPRECIATES YOU. IT CONSIDERS YOU ITS BEST FRIEND AND ALLY. INSIDE YOU, THE LIGHT SPREADS TO THE OUTSIDE, ILLUMINATING THE DARKNESS OF PEOPLE AND THE WHOLE WORLD.

THE LIGHT ASKS YOU TO ILLUMINATE ALL THE WORLDS WITHOUT IT. LET YOUR SOUL SHINE BRIGHTLY AND INFUSE STRENGTH AND COURAGE TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN TRAPPED IN DARKNESS FOR TOO LONG.

YOU ARE THE LIGHT THAT THE WHOLE OF CREATION NEEDS.

When he stopped reading, he did not have time to ask himself any questions that his body glowed brighter and brighter with intense white. She looked at her body, starting from her hands to everything else. His eyes would have opened wide in surprise if not for the fact that if he had done so he would have blinded himself.

Those around him had to cover their eyes.

The portal creatures were not exempt either; on the contrary. They were the most affected. All the giant rats in the vicinity were stunned, almost as if they had been drained of all their energy.

It lasted for a few seconds. Then it died out in the blink of an eye, leaving everyone stunned, first and foremost Samuele himself.

[WARNING!]

YOUR "UNIQUE ABILITY: HEIR OF LIGHT" MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR YOUR CLASS TO EVOLVE.

CLASS EVOLVED INTO "LIGHT MAGE."

"What the hell just happened, Mr. Rua?" Everyone began to ask him questions about the light leaking from his body, but he remained still, still shocked.

'What the hell just happened?" he thought, unconsciously repeating the same question as his companion.

This 'unique ability' had evolved his class. Was it a good thing? Most likely yes, but he also didn't know how to take in all this new information.

"I am the most confused of all here, believe me." He said slowly, still unable to understand what had happened in the last minute.

[WARNING!]

YOU HAVE OBTAINED "CLASS SKILL: TIMELY BLESSING!"

[INFORMATION!]

THANKS TO THE LIGHT ENVELOPING YOUR BODY, YOUR SPEED TEMPORARILY INCREASES BY 50%.

IT CONSUMES 10 MANA POINTS PER SECOND.

Samuele thought he had received enough information for today and looked around. It seemed like whole minutes had passed since the mess inside his head had started, but instead only seconds had passed.

He looked at the giant rats who had fully recovered from the light and were now ready to fight again. Taking a quick look at all of them, he realized that there were a few dozen of them. Even Samuele freed himself from the feeling of slight dizziness that invaded his head and decided that it was a good time to test his first real skill obtained and spoke.

"Sorry, guys, but I'll take these."

The other Adventurers raised an eyebrow in confusion.

"Ehh? What are you talking about-?" One of them was speaking, but he did not have time to finish his sentence that Samuele had disappeared from his seat.

YOU ACTIVATED "ACTIVE SKILL: TIMELY BLESSING!

Samuele aimed at the rat closest to him and with his sword aimed at its throat. The monster had noticed him too late. With fear in his eyes, his head fell to the ground.

He immediately moved on to the next one. He had no time to waste, as his mana points were being consumed at an incredible rate.

The next rat found himself to be much better prepared than the previous one, having seen what had happened to his comrade. He stood defensively and watched Samuele coming toward him. He raised his paw, ready to hurl it at him, but with no success.

Samuele calmly dodged the attack, turning behind him and aiming for a blind spot on his head, succeeding in killing him.

[CONGRATULATIONS!]

YOU LEVELED UP!

Each of them managed to react in a more effective way than the previous ones.

They were intelligent creatures and memorized the attacks they received, so Samuele was not overly surprised. Fortunately, they were much slower than he was, despite the fact that the increase in speed was "only" 50 percent.

In any case, they too fell under the mediocre blade of his sword.

[CONGRATULATIONS!]

YOU LEVELED UP!

Pretty soon, each of the giant rats fell dead weight to the ground, never to rise again. Dozens of them had fallen in not even a minute. Each of the Adventurers stared in shock at the carnage unfolding before them.

"Th-this isn't fair, though..." Mumbled one, still half in disbelief.

"Until recently, wasn't he a Newbie?" Asked another.

"He must have reached level 10 now, that's for sure..."

"And before long he'll reach level 20, too, if he keeps this up! Damn you, stop!!! We're there too!!!" He yelled almost comically, cursing in every possible way the boy who had just killed all their prey, securing all the experience points for himself.

Samuele had just run out of his mana points, and the System automatically deactivated his ability. Hearing his companions, he turned to them and made an embarrassed face.

"Sorry, I got carried away with the euphoria..." He said in a low voice, scratching the side of his head with one finger and looking sideways.

"Damn youuuu!!!!"

After the following very comical reactions of his fellow adventurers, Samuele then decided to stay on the sidelines a bit to leave the monsters to the others as well, and so he completed his third quest since becoming an Adventurer.

[CONGRATULATIONS!]

YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE QUEST! YOU CAN RETRIEVE THE TREASURE CHEST AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAVE.

EXIT THE PORTAL BEFORE IT CLOSES.

As he left the portal, he thought about going home, but then he remembered that he had to go to the Adventurer's Association to register his new level.

In fact, every ten levels reached, one had to go to the Association to have their status screen-including level, statistics, and skills-recorded in their records until they had reached the maximum level limit.

Now that he had passed level 10, he was obligated by law to have his System's data archived. So, he decided it would be better to get this hassle out of the way now rather than the next day.

END OF CHAPTER.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I almost missed publishing a chapter here. How long has it been? Two months, three months? I haven't the faintest idea. Anyway, I saw that I was included, for who knows what strange reason, in the editors' choice. So, I took the opportunity to upload and grab more views. How wicked I am, MUAHAHAH!!! Anyway... I hope you enjoyed this chapter, otherwise you are free to insult me xD. Until next time, which could also be in the new year. So, Merry Christmas to you all in advance! xD
