Chapter 69 - Passing the barbecue stand

"Wendy, why did you suddenly decide to come here today? We always invite you, but you never come."

"Yeah, we've told you before that there are many delicious and fun things here, but you never show any interest. Today, you actually volunteered to come along."

On the street market, four young girls were walking and chatting. One of them was Wendy, and the other three were her roommates. The four of them were youthful and beautiful, attracting many onlookers' attention as they walked through the market. Especially Wendy, she was like a shining beacon in the dark, constantly radiating her own brilliance, capturing the gaze of passersby.

After dinner in the evening, someone in the dormitory suggested going to the street market in front of the school to have a look. They didn't invite Wendy, not because they had a bad relationship with her, but because they knew that Wendy wasn't interested in such places. Also, although they didn't recognize many of the brands on Wendy's usual clothing, they knew they were definitely not cheap. So, they understood that Wendy had no interest in this kind of market selling cheap goods.

However, today Wendy seemed a bit different. When the others suggested going there, she actually took the initiative to join them. This made her roommates curious and wondering why Wendy was willing to come today.

"Just wanted to take a look," Wendy said casually.

"I don't think so." One of her roommates chuckled, "I can tell from your eyes that ever since we arrived, you've been looking for something. It doesn't seem like you're just casually browsing; it's more like you have a goal in mind or something to buy."

Wendy glanced at her and said lightly, "You're mistaken."

"Is that so? Maybe." They were already accustomed to Wendy's cold temperament and didn't mind. They knew that although Wendy had a cold personality, she wasn't a bad person at heart.

Just then, Wendy's three roommates suddenly noticed her eyes looking in a certain direction, and her gaze became noticeably brighter.

"you came here for this barbecue stall." The roommate who spoke earlier said, "Well, it's not surprising. The chef at this barbecue stall is indeed very skilled, considered the best around here. Many people in the school enjoy his barbecue."

"That's right. When a few of us came here to play a few days ago, we ate at this stall, and the taste was really good," another roommate added.

"But because his skills are so good, there are always many people here. If you want to eat his barbecue, you have to wait in line. Those in a hurry can't even eat."

"Yeah, his skills are really good." Wendy's tone seemed to have a bit more warmth than before. The barbecue stall she was looking at was Jake's.

"Have you eaten here too?"

"Of course, otherwise why would Wendy come here specifically?"

Wendy didn't say anything, but for the first time, she had the desire to eat street food like this. Jake wanted to explain about Alan. It was true that he was the former head chef at Kailomen, but it wasn't easy to prove. Whether these people had been to Kailomen or not, none of them had seen Alan. So, even if Jake said that Alan was the former head chef, others might not believe it.

"Some people, once their business becomes successful, start thinking of deceiving customers and forget that customers are gods. They start using apprentices to do the work."

"Yeah, who knows, maybe there's something wrong with his ingredients. People can do anything for money."

"Perhaps there's something wrong with his seasonings, otherwise, how could it taste so good?"

Ordinary customers doubted Alan's identity. Jake didn't mind, but he didn't expect that the owners of the nearby barbecue stalls would stop doing business and come over to join the commotion. Moreover, their words were heart-piercing.

Jake frowned, but the other owners saw him as a joke because they knew that rumors, regardless of their truth, could create doubts in people's minds and affect Jake's business and reputation.

Alan looked at Jake awkwardly, filled with apologies. He felt responsible for the trouble Jake was facing because it was all because of him. If Jake hadn't offered to teach him, none of this would have happened.

"I was indeed the head chef at Kailomen," Alan couldn't help but speak up.

"Who would believe that? The head chef of Kailomen selling barbecue here? Even if you've fallen on hard times, other restaurants would be fighting to hire you."

"That's right. Even children wouldn't believe such a thing," the barbecue stall owners said.

"I can prove that he really was the head chef at Kailomen!" At that moment, a cold voice rang out in the crowd. Everyone subconsciously turned to look.

"Is it Wendy?!"

"Is it really her? Does she also enjoy this owner's barbecue?"

"Wendy, my goddess, she's so beautiful."

"So this is Wendy? Just as beautiful as the rumors say."

The person who spoke was indeed Wendy. Most of the customers here were students from the surrounding schools, including Princeton University. Wendy had a high reputation within Princeton University, so as soon as she appeared, many Princeton University students recognized her. Even students from other schools had heard of Wendy's name.

"Why are you here?" Jake looked at Wendy in surprise. There are quite a few familiar faces here today, and even Wendy has come.

"Just passing by," Wendy said casually.

"Not really," Wendy's roommates secretly rolled their eyes, but they didn't expose Wendy. Instead, they became curious and observed Jake.

Her roommates knew Wendy's personality well. Normally, she wouldn't even spare a glance at anything unrelated to her, let alone get involved in other people's affairs. Now, she was taking the initiative to help the barbecue stall owner resolve the situation, which was quite different from her usual behavior. And based on what the owner just said, could it be that they knew each other?

"If you say he is, then he is?"

"Exactly, I suspect that you are in cahoots, deceiving the public together."

"How can such a young and beautiful girl be so ignorant?"

The barbecue stall owners, although amazed by Wendy's beauty, didn't know her personally. They were also displeased to see Wendy speaking up for Jake and helping him. It naturally caused some discomfort in their hearts. Regardless of how beautiful she was, the fact that she was speaking up for that young man made her their enemy.
