Chapter 38 - taking a taxi

Being a physical education teacher was quite relaxed for Jake, whether during class or when there were no classes. The people in Jake's office, except for Jake himself, were all older and familiar with each other. It was evident that Bill held a certain position in the office. After showing hostility towards Jake, David was still relatively amicable, occasionally exchanging a few words with Jake. The other two male teachers were more indifferent towards Jake, and as for Verna, she rarely spoke throughout the day, and her desk was far from Jake's, so there was no chance for them to interact.

As a result, Jake felt somewhat isolated when he first arrived. However, he didn't pay much attention to it and enjoyed his leisure time, browsing the internet alone. It was quite nice. In this relaxed and somewhat boring state, Jake finished his first day as a teacher.

"Time to go, time to go! Let's go to Kailomen!" As soon as it was time to finish work, Bill stood up and shouted.

In reality, it was not yet time to leave, but Bill had already discussed with the others in the office where they would have dinner in the evening. Of course, his main target of inquiry was Verna. However, she acted as if she hadn't heard his words, completely ignoring him. The other three teachers, on the other hand, responded to him.

"Bill, are we really going to Kailomen?" one of the teachers asked with excitement and anticipation.

Kailomen was one of the most famous restaurants in J City and also one of the most expensive. It wasn't a place where ordinary teachers like them could afford to dine. When Bill proposed going to Kailomen and said he would treat them, that's why this teacher was so excited. If it turned out to be "split the bill," he probably wouldn't have the same attitude.

Jake secretly sneered at the way this teacher addressed Bill. He had heard this title more than once throughout the day. The two male teachers flattered Bill in various ways, and David was somewhat better, but it was clear that he didn't want to offend Bill either. All of this was because Bill's family owned a company, making him a typical second-generation wealthy individual.

Although the treatment for Princeton University teachers wasn't bad, it depended on who they compared themselves to. Especially for physical education teachers like them, they didn't have many extra sources of income. Compared to Bill, who was a second-generation wealthy individual, there was naturally quite a difference.

"Of course, it's true. When have I bragged?" Bill said arrogantly. "Today is the first dinner of this semester, so we can't just pick any random place. Let's go to Kailomen. I'll treat!"

After speaking, Bill looked at Jake and said, "It'll also open someone's eyes and broaden their horizons."

Jake naturally knew he was referring to himself. In the past, he might have been angry and refused to go. However, now Jake had a much calmer mindset and broader horizons, possibly due to the influence of the ring. He knew his future wouldn't be ordinary anymore, and there were many things he wouldn't fuss over.

Seeing that Jake didn't resist, Bill's smug expression became even more apparent. "Verna, you can ride in my car later," Bill said politely to Verna.

"No need, I have my own car," Verna replied. Without looking back, she left the office.

Bill was slightly annoyed, but it quickly subsided. Over the years, he had been rejected by Verna not just once or twice, so he was already accustomed to it.

"Bill, can we ride in your car and experience what it feels like to ride in a sports car?" one of the male teachers asked.

"Sure," Bill thought for a moment and said, "All of you can ride in my car." Then he looked at Jake and said, "Except you!"

"I never intended to ride in your car," Jake said. "I'll just take a taxi."

"Oh, you're so tough. I thought you had your own car. Turns out you need to take a taxi," Bill mocked. "Since that's the case, we'll go ahead. Take your time getting a taxi. Just a reminder, it's not easy to find a taxi near our school. If you're late, don't blame us for not waiting. Let's go and start the meal."

After speaking, Bill walked out, and the other two teachers quickly followed. David hesitated for a moment and said to Jake, "It's true that it's not easy to find a taxi near the school. You should hurry."

"Yeah, I know. You go ahead, and I'll join you shortly," Jake said.

"Okay," David said and left the office as well.

Jake smiled in place, not expecting to encounter such a situation on his first day of work. It seemed that his streak of bad luck hadn't completely disappeared yet. After tidying up a bit, Jake headed towards the school's exit. Since he had already agreed to attend the dinner, he wouldn't purposely escape from it. He had to go.

However, as Bill and others had mentioned, it was indeed difficult to find a taxi near the school. There were plenty of taxis, but there were even more people waiting for them. This area was near the school and in the city center, so there was a large flow of people, making it hard to catch a taxi.

Just as Jake was considering whether to walk a bit further before getting a taxi, a red sports car stopped in front of him. The window rolled down, and it was Verna wearing sunglasses.

"Get in the car," Verna said.

"No, thanks. I'll just take a taxi," Jake declined.

"Get in. It's difficult to find a taxi here. Are you really planning to wait until we finish eating before you arrive?" Verna said.

Jake glanced at a taxi that had just pulled over not far away, and several people rushed to get in. He walked around the front of the car, opened the door, and sat in the passenger seat. The sports car roared to life and left, leaving many envious eyes behind.

"Who is that beautiful woman? So pretty and wealthy. I have to tell Selena. She has a strong rival now," Novia, Selena's roommate, saw the scene of Verna inviting Jake into the car from the crowd and immediately became concerned for Selena.

Meanwhile, Jake, smelling the faint fragrance inside the car and looking at Verna sitting next to him like a star, felt a slight surge of excitement in his heart.

"Thank you for giving me a ride," Jake spoke first, breaking the silence in the car.

"Don't mention it," Verna said. "Actually, I should be the one apologizing."

"Why?" Jake asked, puzzled.

"Because of Bill," Verna said. "I know that it's because of me that he deliberately targeted you."
