Chereads / The Dark Magus / Chapter 35 - Urn

Chapter 35 - Urn

I got back to my room after getting the armor. I was able to get some B rank armor that only cost me ten silver coins so I still had a lot of money to spare. Nova had to leave after some time because she was going back to the Magus Academy. She still tried to make me join the academy and she was even close to just carrying me along with her when I kept refusing.

I was going to go to the academy later because there is something that I must get my hands on. But I didn't plan to stay in the academy for long and I am not joining her team or any other team.

There was a knock on the door and I went to open it. I saw the tall bandit that became the new leader of the bandits after I killed the former leader - I think he said his name was Paul. There was another man behind him that looked like a guard and the bandit looked frightened, "Mr. Black," the guard said once I opened the door, "This man claims to be a guest of yours. I do not mean to insult your guest, but I just wanted to make sure he was telling the truth."

I looked at that bandit and he smiled nervously. I didn't blame the guard for thinking the bandit was lying. This is the Royal Hotel and it was filled with many high lass people. The bandit was wearing loose clothes that were dirty and torn, you would never think that he was here to visit someone in the Royal Hotel. Couldn't he have gotten better clothes since he knew he was coming here? What's the point of all that money he stole if he can't even buy clothes?

"Yeah, he's my servant," I said, "You don't need to worry about him." The guard bowed respectfully before he turned to leave, and I looked back at Paul, "Are you an idiot? What the hell are you wearing?"

"I… didn't have anything better to wear. We lost all our money after another gang attacked us in a forced takeover," he said, "I wasn't strong enough to fight them off, so they took control of everything."

"So even bandits have shit like that," I mumbled before I waved him into the room. He entered and I went to sit on the bed, "So, what did you come to tell me?"

"It's about the task you gave us," Paul said, and I waved for him to continue. I already knew when the school students were coming, but I still wanted to know what he had to say, "There is a student of Magus Academy on this floor right now," I narrowed my eyes at him and Paul took a step back, "I know you said there was going to be a team of Maguc Academy students coming soon, but I just thought you would want to know if there was any student at all. Sorry for the mistake."

"Eh?" I gave him a look of confusion before I realized that he was just afraid of my glare. I relaxed my eyes, "It's fine, that's enough. Keep an eye on the students, and tell me where they go tomorrow.."

Paul bowed respectfully before he left the room. I fell back on the bed as I wondered what was going on. Nova said that her children will come to this floor in a week, so what is a magus academy student doing here already? The students weren't given so much freedom that they can just go to any floor at any moment they want. They have to have a permit and a good reason before they will be allowed to leave the school premises.

It is possible that I am just overthinking things, but I trust my instinct and they haven't let me down yet. I'll find out what the child is doing here tomorrow.

[Third Person POV]

On the first floor, things have been very quiet since Jason left. Yuvan was in her office signing some documents that would allow them to sell the crystals that Jason sold to them. The amount of money that would be coming into the guild because of Jason was astronomical.

Yuvan looked towards her wine cabinet and she frowned as she brought out a cigarette. She hasn't touched those drinks since Jason left. It just wasn't fun drinking alone anymore.

There was a knock on her door and Yuvan told the person to come in. The receptionist entered with a stack of papers, "I've brought the last document ma'am. The guild is willing to allow us to keep 30% of the profits made off the sales of the crystals since there are no regulations covering something like this. But in exchange, they want to know more about Jason, is that okay?"

"Yeah, just tell them whatever they want to know," Yuvan said as she collected the papers and looked through them, "Jason doesn't look like he is hiding anything, so there is no need to keep his identity a secret."

"Yes, ma'am," the receptionist said, "And there is someone here to see you. He says he is a businessman from the fifth floor."

Yuvn narrowed her eyes, "Did he tell you what he wanted?"

"He is looking for some children that were kidnapped by bandits," the receptionist said, "About twenty of them."

"Send him in," she said and the receptionist left before a tall man wearing a long black coat entered the room. The man had a full beard of white hair, but he was completely bald. Yuvan was surprised to see him because she knew exactly who this was. His name was Urn and he was the personal butler for Dante, the Quartz trader on floor five.

"Guild master Yuvan," the man greeted in a gruff voice as he entered and Yuvan stood to shake his hand, "It's a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for taking out time to meet me."

"Of course," Yuvan said, "I heard you were looking for some children."

"Yes," Urn managed to sound both angry and sad at the same time, "My master, Dante, finds great pleasure in taking care of unfortunate magicless orphans. He cares for them and provides them with the necessary things they need to survive. But recently there was an attack on one of our camps here on the first floor and bandits kidnapped many of the children. It is truly unfortunate. Any form of help you can render at all would be appreciated."

Yuvan was immediately suspicious. Why would Dane take such an interest in children? Yuvan has met the shrewd businessman before and she has never seen him as the sort of person that would care about children.

"I haven't heard anything about an abduction on this floor," Yuvan said, "Maybe will have better luck asking members of the church. The children could be there."

"I have already been there," Urn brought out some papers from his inner jacket, "We have not had any luck finding the children there either. These are some pictures that were drawn up, I'll leave them here so that you can look through them. Please, if you see any of the children, inform us immediately. They are very important o us."

Yuvan collected the paper and she said goodbye to Urn as he stood up to leave. She began looking through the papers and she saw many charcoal drawings of little children. They all had blank faces and they looked very thin. She continued scanning through the papers until she got to a drawing that made her eyes widen.

'Isn't this Jason?' she wondered as she stared at the crude drawing of a long-haired boy. The boy was thin and there was no life in his eyes, but she couldn't mistake him for anyone else. This is definitely Jason.

Yuvan called her receptionist and the girl came in, "Yes ma'am?"

"I need to get a message to Jason on the fourth floor. There is something important I need to talk to him about."

"Uh… how can I find him, ma'am?"

"Just ask for anyone that uses Dark magic," Yuvan said, "I'm sure there isn't anyone else like that other than Jason. Be quick about it."

"Yes, ma'am."
