To Faye's relief, it was not Tobias who was lying sick on the cot. She sighed gratefully under her breath, "Thank the creator, it's not him."
However, what she was seeing still did not make the situation any better.
"Whaaa…!" The little boy's pained sobs reached to her ears. The sight of his suffering filled Faye's heart with an overwhelming ache.
Mielle, the maid, sat beside him with a washcloth and basin, gently washing the sweat from his face. The unrelenting fever that was tormenting his body stained his skin scarlet.
When Faye approached, she noticed the open sores on his exposed skin. It was the tell-tale sign of the plague.
The pallor on her face turned pale at seeing his dismal condition.
Sterling grasped Faye from behind. Her shoulders went stiff as he firmly held her in place. "That is far enough." He warned, "Do not go one step further."
