Then, as Sterling's beloved knights left for the fortress, Faye found herself alone and terrified with the enormous, red, scaly beast. Her heart pounded against her chest, her emotions in disarray because of the sudden and bizarre turn of events.
Her inner thoughts were abruptly interrupted by Arvon's gruff voice questioning, "Are you scared?"
Faye shifted her gaze and found herself staring into Arvon's massive fiery eye. His tail lifted her gently from the forest floor, drawing her closer to him for a better view of her features. She watched as his eye blinked, revealing two distinct sets of eyelids, and a shudder ran through her.
Faye bravely squared her shoulders, feeling a slight tension in her muscles, and schooled her expression to an indifferent one, her eyes scanning the dragon's eye. She could still smell the faint scent of brimstone mixed with the crisp winter breeze.
With a steady voice, she asked, "Where is Sterling?"
