Sterling was stunned into silence as he heard Faye's words. He scrubbed his massive hand over his face. The world around him tumbled like bricks as his heart sank. The very thing he feared most had returned to unleash its curse upon Everton once more.
He leapt from his horse and came to kneel beside Faye. He was so scared for her now that she had exposed herself to the ill knight. Sterling heard the wheeze in Sir Proud's chest, and he knew that meant it would not be long before he would pass into the next world.
The Duke gently placed his hand on her shoulder. "Faye, we must leave him. He is too far gone. It won't be long until the Ferryman comes to claim his Charon."
All the other knights dismounted their horses hearing what their commander had said. Each bowed his head in silent prayer for their fallen brother in arms.
As Sterling's hand contacted Faye, he felt the familiar hum of energy emanate from her body.
