Chapter 26
Cassandra watched as a fight broke out in the wall. Somar and Father were beside her, watching. There were only two enemies but the soldiers seemed to have great difficulty dealing with them. Many soldiers had already died at the hands of those two. Even the crossbows didn't seem to work as the soldiers struggled to kill even one of the enemies.
"Are those zombies? " She asked and turned to her side. Somar stood there, his hands folded and a solemn look on his face. "I believe so," he said, his gaze never leaving the soldiers fighting.
Cassandra wanted to go and help them but she held herself back. If what Somar had said was true then the Necromancer must be hidden somewhere, waiting for a chance to escape. Her presence might scare the Necromancer and abandon whatever he was doing. He was probably trying to escape using the zombies as a distraction. A simple but effective tactic.
"Aren't Necromancers supposed to be rare? Why is there one in such a small town? " Cassandra asked as she removed a strand of her hair which kept being blown by the wind onto her face.
"Yes. They are. This one is probably newly awakened. He's not strong enough to survive in cities as he would be captured within a week. That might be why he is hiding in this town. " Somar chuckled.
"Oh," Cassandra nodded. She had heard a lot about the Necromancers. Especially about The Shadow, a powerful Necromancer who had appeared out of nowhere during the dark ages. He had appeared around a hundred years ago, right after the pits had awakened. The destruction and deaths he had caused were on a scale never heard of or seen before. Even the Vampire Progenitor who had risen during the Arcane era when the Arcane empire and Grabet empire were at war hadn't caused that much destruction.
But the one here wasn't of such power. He was a newbie with few zombies at his disposal. So, it should be easy to capture him.
As the three individuals watched the fight from a top of a house, the soldiers converged. The two zombies were swarmed but they still fought with ferocity. And that was when Cassandra saw a man enter her vision. He was on top of a house which was three storied tall. His features were blurry as he was even further away from the fight.
She turned to her side and saw Father and Somar quickly jumping down. Somar jumped from roof to roof while Father glided through the air, his golden robe fluttering.
Cassandra too followed but before she could even reach near the wall. The man had vanished.
"Where did he go? "She questioned as she glanced all around. But he was nowhere to be seen.
She quickly reached the wall and landed beside Somar who was looking down the wall towards the outer district. She too glanced at the other side but there was no one like the man had just vanished.
"Where did he go? " Cassandra asked but no reply came. She turned to her side and saw Somar and Father seething.
"Notify the other churches about the Necromancer and deploy a search party after him quickly. He couldn't have gone too far. "Fathers chilling voice left an order for Somar and he flew away leaving Cassandra and Somar at the wall, one confused and one angry.
Somar too left without a word, leaving Cassandra alone. She turned to her side and saw the soldiers still fighting the zombies. They still hadn't managed to kill them.
She walked towards them and waved her hand. A green circle surrounded her hand as her red hair fluttered in the wind. A transparent blade appeared in front of her which quickly launched towards the zombies. It miraculously dodged the soldiers and cleaved the zombies in two, dumbfounding the soldiers.
"What? "One of them finally found his voice as they all stared at the dismembered zombies which they had been struggling against. The soldiers checked his surroundings but there was no one. It was like god had sent a weapon down to help them.
