Chapter 5 - "Enlightenment"

Magic came from outside of the human world. It leaked in from the portals made by the Impurus. Meaning that magic never belong to humans, so they weren't born with it an were never made to coexist with it. That was the major reason that incantations from another language were needed to be able to use magic. However, Impurus were different. They originated in a world rich in mana and magic. They coexist with the existence that isn't natural in the human world. Because of that incantations weren't necessary, and they were able to use magic using a different method. A method that humans didn't know. So, when Lucio manage to cast two separate spells without the need for a single word, it was clear that he was either a genius beyond parrel with a higher affinity for mana, or he wasn't human.

But, of course, the first had to be true. The one defining feature of Impurus' that separated them from humans, were the horns growing out of their heads. And Lucio had never displayed having such a feature. So, he was deemed a genius with an unimaginable high affinity for magic and mana, and they moved on to another subject because Miss. Yao didn't know how to teach him. That was only for the moment. In the later times during the subject, Miss. Yao intended to push her student as far as he could go.

They went from subject to subject with every sarcastic remark, show of defiance, and anything that wasn't "student etiquette" granted Lucio another overdose like shock to cause his written letters to pass the page lines. Between every subject, the lights were turned off for him to take a 30 minute nap. Although, those naps really didn't help as the lights being off were the trigger to his hallucinations. A blank slate leaves a lot to the imagination. So, Lucio didn't even know how many days passed, but at some point, he was too tired to even force his eyes open. Which is where the physical torture came in.

In a day, which Lucio decided was one round of going through all of the subjects: History, Magic, Science, Math, Impurus Biology, Swordsmanship, really any class the school had to offer was taught to him making it a total of 9 classes in his so-called day. With 30 minutes between every class to nap, Lucio should be getting 4 1/2 hours of sleep which is pretty generous giving his situation. However, that was for a normal person who didn't have hallucinations. Lucio goes through daily mental torture that gets in the way of his sleep schedule. An insomniac if you will. Adding that to the mix, he wouldn't get those 4 1/2 hours.

Sa, he would only get 10 minutes before waking up to suffer. Multiplying that by 9 would only get him 90 minutes of sleep which is only a hour and half. While 4 hours is bad enough, a hour in a half was way worse.

A human needs at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep to be healthy. Though, 4 hours is all the sleep someone need if they just wanted to live, not at full health but to be alive. Taking that in account, Lucio, who's only getting a hour and a half of sleep, is on his last leg, literally. Add in the constant electric shocks that overloads his nervous system which is also bad for someone's health puts his last leg three feet under. Oh, and don't forget his magic classes that take up mana, which can only be replenished by a spell or rest.

With Miss. Yao now forcing him to cast higher level spell, spells that take up large amounts of mana, his last leg that was three feet under was slowly sinking further into the ground. It was as though any day, he could die, and well, that was the truth.

Basically,

1.5 hours of sleep + constant electric shocks + high class spell casting = Lucio's inevitable death. Oh, and he also started mid day hallucinating.

Sometimes, when Lucio looked at his teachers face, she would be dead but still talking. Her eyes would have no light but kept moving. Her face, her body, her clothes, were covered in blood, but she didn't seem to notice. The room phased in and out between a white solitary classroom, and a horror scene. Sometimes the phases would happen when he blinked and sometimes it was like the room glitched from solitary to horror. Lucio was becoming no short of insane.

Every second his eyes were open, he wanted to close them, but the electricity being forced into his body from his ankle always jolted him away. Every movement of his body was heavy and sluggish. His imagination was dim and fuzzy. When he talked, his words were slow and slurred like he was about to fall asleep at any moment, and his hearing was like he was wearing headphone. His breathing was irregular and erratic. His breath was unsteady and shallow. And his head...it was light. It...it...Lucio's head...

"Mr. Lucio, you have 500 swings left!"

Lucio's breath was erratic beyond his own control. He couldn't even breath in without his mind going fuzzy. He could barley feel his own saliva leaving his mouth. His...h-head-

The wooden sword in his hand was dropped to the floor. His hands covered both his eyes and forehead. Oh his...his head...

"It...My head, it..."

Lucio couldn't take it. His head was all over the place and electric current running up his leg. None of it was helping. Nothing was in his favor. Not the blood stained walls he saw when he uncovered his eyes, the constant nerve frying shock, his head, the over work, insomnia, lack of mana, everything.

Unable to bare with it all, Lucio fell to the floor his hands never moving from his eyes. He didn't want to see anything. He could barely hear anything. Air filled his lungs, and his small breaths never let it out. His body shook uncontrollably, but he could barely feel the pain of electricity anymore. All he could feel was his messed up head.

"It burns..."

Lucio's head burned but there was nothing hot on it. It was like a heated metal rod was being pressed against this head, and it burned. But, it wasn't his entire head. It was just the left side of his forehead.

"It burns, is burns, it burns, it burns..."

There was nothing he could do about it. He could even think about what could be causing the burning pain in his head. He couldn't think if he wanted to. He could only focus on his burning, so he didn't notice the electric shackle on his ankle had been ripped apart. The white cuff was in complete tatters, and his body stopped shaking from the electricity. His body couldn't even twitch as it'd done before because of his tired out nerves.

Miss. Yao didn't know what to think of the situation. She admit that she'd seen signs of fatigue in her student, but didn't think much of it. After all, they were in an intense learning facility where it was normal for a student or two to end up dead. When seeing her student like this, she was only disappointed that he was supposed to be the genius of the decade. She expected more. She expected for him to pass every human restraint as he did with his magic ability. She wanted to see the true worth of the so-called specialist she was supposed to teach, but all she got from him was a lazy, unmotivated, and rude child. There was not a show of a remarkable brain, excellent physically abilities. There was nothing of that. Miss. Yao had actually came to the hope of her student dying, so she could move on to the next task she was going to be given.

But instead of a genius or a quick death, all she got in return for her thoughts was an insane brat. It was almost like he was seizing on the floor while talking about his head burning. There was nothing in the place that could cause such a pain to the kid, so it was obvious to her that her student was just insane beyond repair. She'd come to the conclusion that he was just too weak to work hard enough, and went insane because of it. That's how all of the other students who were in the room were written off dead. "The student had worked himself to death" is what she would tell her higher-ups and be done with it.

Of course, that was before she found the electric transmitting cuff ripped into small pieces around the ankle it used to surround. Miss. Yao knew that such a cuff could only be taken off by using a key, and the thing was so durable that it would take a strong force of pure mana that only advanced catalysts could do. Besides, even if Lucio could do such a thing in his almost dead state, the room was built with a mana blocking feature that was active any time besides her magic lesson which wasn't now. What she was covering now was swordsmanship, so all mana shouldn't be able to be used right now. It should've been impossible for that cuff to be torn apart under such conditions, yet there it was, in tatters. It was unbelievable.

Such a phenomenon got Miss. Yao wondering. Maybe her student was going through enlightenment. Although, she always heard that it was a peaceful and glorifying moment. It was like as though you were getting baptized by a divine being themselves. At least, that's how her enlightenment felt. But, Miss. Yao wasn't going to change her thinking about her student's achievements.

All moments of enlightenment were different. She supposed that her student was going through this much pain because he was receiving some great power. And so, her disappointment that had been growing in her from the beginning, had started to sprout into pride because her teachings lead to the making of a wonderful magic genius child. It was one of her greatest achievements, and she was going to tell the higher-ups right away because god had blessed a child in her care. Just thinking about the praise and fame, as well as the jealously and anger of others, that was going to be given to her made her chest puff. She just couldn't wait and rushed out of the room.

Lucio couldn't do anything. There was nothing he could do. No one he could call for help. Nothing that could save him from the agonizing torture. If he was in the sane of mind, Lucio was admit that going insane from hallucinations was better then the burning pain in his head. Though, now, that wasn't the only thing he was feeling. In the exact spot of where the burn feeling was coming from, Lucio could feel something poking out of forehead. He felt that whatever was causing him so much pain, was now about to pierce through his skin from the inside of his own body. And when that first break-through happened, Lucio screamed at the top of his lungs. He could feel fire hot blood pouring out of the new wound caused by the unknown on his hand that seemed to cover his eyes for this exact reason. Although now, his hand was burning because of his own blood. It was as though the heat of fire was dancing on the skin of his fingers, leaving burns wherever they went.

"Help me!"

Lucio didn't know who he was screaming for. He didn't know who he wanted to hear him, but he screamed for help. As loud as he could. At the top of his lungs, using all of the air that was forcefully stored inside. Straining his vocal cords over and over to the point of them ripping.

Then, to his rescue came a black hue breaking through the ceiling. With the breaking of the ceiling, Lucio could feel some of the debris hitting his body, but he didn't care. Not when he screamed so loud that his vocal cords were shot because of an agonizing pain. Nor did he care about his body being lifted from the floor while being wrapped in a blanket. All he wanted was the pain to go away.

In which case, it did. It was some type of miracle that the burning and piercing of his body just stopped as though it never happened. Like all of the pain he experienced was just in his head.

With the pain gone, Lucio was allowed to feel the kind warmth of the blanket he was wrapped in. It was unlike the burning of his brain. It was warmth that allowed him to fall asleep peacefully for the first time in forever. He loved it.
