If Gwen was the only person who got hurt, people would assume it was a personal thing. However, if it was a series of events that Gwen was only a single part of, with the Chosen being the main targets, then that would make it much better since it would not be personal and emotionally motivated.
It would be like there were terrorists around causing havoc and mayhem. Midas also had other intentions for these actions, and he was going to watch over everything happily from the backlines. Right then, it was important for him to stand at the front, opposing the terrorists with everything he had.
