Chapter 26 - First Quest (2)

A couple of minutes later…

The main hall finally quieted down because most of the people already left.

There were only 6 people left standing near the Quest Board and reading the quests posted there. And among the 6 people, 4 of them were Copper ranks.

There were also a few people standing by the side waiting and talking amongst each other.

Meanwhile, at the counters, there were still a number of people lining up and holding a piece of paper taken from the Quest Board.

Vivian made her way to the Quest Board.

When she got there, the first thing she did was to look at the Quest Papers that the Copper ranks were looking at. After that, she turned to the other Quest Papers, trying to see the differences.

I think I can identify the differences but I'm not sure…

"Hi, excuse me," Vivian said to one of the Copper ranks nearby.

It was a girl around the age of 18 and had a copper-colored pendant around her neck engraved with the initials "II". She was wearing gear and carrying a short spear on her back.

Her companion, a man, looked younger but was of the same rank. He too was wearing gear but had 2 daggers on his waists.

They both looked at Vivian.

"Sorry for bothering you both. But can I ask where are the Copper Rank Quests here?"

"Here," the woman said and pointed.

"I see. Thank you," Vivian said and smiled before looking at the Quest Papers that the woman pointed.

Yup, these were the papers that I suspected were the Copper Rank Quests…

Now what to choose…?

Given that Vivian couldn't read, she didn't know which one to choose. For all she knows, she could choose one that required her to travel far away. And given that she knew nothing much about this world, the probability of her getting lost was very high.

"Excuse me," said a female voice.

Vivian turned to where the voice came from. It was the woman she asked just now.

"Me?" Vivian asked.

"Do you already have party members?"

"No."

"Can we ask what's your Class?"

"Class?"

"We're looking for someone who has a Class healing spell or someone with the Light Affinity."

Class healing spell or someone with the Light Affinity...?

She recalled the "Class" on her Status Panel.

I'm a Thief...

And I don't have any healing spell...

She recalled the "Affinity" on her Status Panel.

I have Fire and Poison...

"Sorry, but I'm a Thief."

When they heard Vivian say she was a Thief, their eyes immediately shifted to her waist and thighs and noticed that there were no daggers, not even scabbards.

"I see. Sorry for bothering you," said the woman and then ripped out one Quest Paper from the Quest Board before heading over to stand in line in front of one of the counters.

Her male companion, on the other hand, went over to two people who were waiting at a corner of the room.

Vivian returned her gaze to the Quest Papers for Copper Rank adventurers.

Now which one to choose…?

Is it prohibited to take more than 1…?

She glanced at the people lining up at one of the counters.

All of them only had 1 paper on their hands...

But I can't read and I need a source of income…

She looked around.

Two of the 4 people who were standing in front of the Quest Board with Vivian left and exited the building.

Fuck it…!

She ripped out 2 Quest Papers that she believed were Copper Rank Quests and then stood in line in front of the counters.

Some people gave the side eye for having 2 Quest Papers on her hand but she didn't pay attention to them.

Oh God, I wish I had my earphones…

***

A couple of minutes later…

The adventurer in front of Vivian was done processing her quest and stepped away.

Vivian stepped forward and the receptionist's brows knitted together as she noticed the 2 papers on Vivian's hands.

"Sorry, but I can't read and I don't have any party members so I chose these 2 papers."

This was the card Vivian decided to play. In her mind, no one would kick down anyone who openly admits their weaknesses, especially if it's a woman. Anyone who does that would be frowned upon by society.

Hearing what Vivian bravely announced, the receptionist's brows relaxed and a look of pity flashed across her face.

"I'm very sorry, but an adventurer can only take one quest at a time, except under special circumstances. However, if the adventurer isn't able to read, they can refer to the counter over there," the receptionist said and pointed at one of the counters.

"I see. Sorry for causing problems," Vivian said and then went to the counter that the receptionist pointed.

"Hi, you probably know why I'm here," Vivian said as she approached the receptionist and showed the 2 Quest Papers on her hand.

"Yes, please hand them over to me," the receptionist said and extended her hand.

Vivian handed over the papers.

"These 2 are for Copper Rank quests.

"This one requires you to hunt 15 Bukaroo tails. The reward is 20 copper coins and the time limit is 3 days.

"The one here requires you to pick up a package from a person located in this city and then deliver it to a person located in Dascha Village. The reward is 30 copper coins and the time limit is 7 days."

"Do you know what a Bukaroo looks like? I have a vague idea but I'm not 100% sure," said Vivian.

"Please wait here for a moment."

The receptionist got up from her seat and entered a door behind the counter.

After a minute or two, the receptionist returned with a large book on her hands.

She laid it down on top of the desk. The book was so old that it made a creaking noise when the receptionist opened its binder and she began flipping through pages.

Vivian noticed that it was a sketchbook and had words or descriptions on each picture. Some sketches had more words, others had less. And lastly, the sketches weren't colored.

"Here it is," the receptionist said and flipped the book. "This is the Bukaroo."

Looking at the drawing, Vivian's brows knitted together.

"An adult Bukaroo is about 10 inches tall and it has blue feathers but its chest is color green. It has a tail about 8 inches long that looks like 3 pieces of wood intertwined together and can be used to sting an opponent which causes momentarily paralysis in the targeted area.

"This bird isn't aggressive. And when provoked, they will mostly fly away.

"You can find them in the forest surrounding the city," said the receptionist.

This is a Bukaroo...?

Why does it look so familiar...?

"Do you have any questions?" asked the receptionist.

"I've encountered a bird like this in the forest outside the city," said Vivian. "However, I'm not 100% sure because the ones I've encountered, they were aggressive."

"Hmm…" the receptionist mused. "How many have you encountered?"

"I can't remember. Maybe 3 or 4?"

"Are you sure they had blue feathers, a green chest and a tail that looked like intertwined wood?"

"Yes."

"And when you said forest, did you mean the forest surrounding this city?"

"Yes."

"Did you do something or carried something that provoked the Bukaroo?"

"Not that I'm aware of."

"To be honest, I've never encountered any report where Bukaroos are the aggressors. However, I also don't know if there are birds that looks similar to the Bukaroo."

Vivian didn't say anything. After all, she just arrived in this world yesterday.

"Perhaps it's a new bird species that migrated here?" asked the receptionist.

Vivian shook her head.

"I honestly don't know."

"Will you be taking this quest? Because if you will, we would like you to bring us a sample of these aggressive Bukaroos that you've mentioned."

Vivian cursed inside her head.

Given that she only arrived in this world yesterday and only has a handful of knowledge about this world with no one she can trust, the last thing she wants is to gain attention. For all she knows, if they found out that she transmigrated in this world, they might do experiments on her, like maybe dissect her and whatnot.

Should I take the other quest…?

No, given that it's a quest and the time limit is 7 days, it's probably far away…

But what if Dascha Village isn't far away and just hard to reach because the path going there is dangerous…?

But what if it isn't…?

I mean, it is a Copper Quest after all...

So I guess it mustn't be that dangerous…?

But still…

Shit…!

I can't even play the foreigner card because I don't know any names of the cities, towns and villages in this world…!

The only name I know is this city, Luxen…

Should I just decline both quests and pick another one…?

But what if by doing that I will be branded as a nuisance…?

I don't want to get any unnecessary attention…

And what if the next quests I get are no better…?

At least I now know what a Bukaroo is and they seem to be aggressive...

And if I don't take any quests, I won't have any money…

"The Bukaroo quest has a time limit of 3 days, right?"

"Yes."

"If I finish the quest earlier or let's say within today, can I take on another quest within the same day as well?"

"Yes."

"I'll take the Bukaroo quest. I have to gather 15 tails, right?"

"Yes, 15 tails of the Bukaroo bird," the receptionist said and handed over the Quest Paper for the Bukaroo tails. "And if possible, if you encounter any of the aggressive Bukaroos you mentioned, please bring one or two. And of course, the guild will compensate you for that, 10 copper coins each. It must be a live one, though, so that we can do some testing."

"Okay, I will try," Vivian said and then headed over back to the counter from earlier.
