Chereads / The Seven Weapons / Chapter 6 - 6/On the Edge

Chapter 6 - 6/On the Edge

"Alice, could you leave me alone for a moment, please."

"As you wish."

Alice looked at her ally before leaving her.

Mirror seemed like she still hadn't come to term with what she had done. She was still looking at the dead corpse of the white-haired Alice with eyes full of regret and sorrow.

She needed some time alone.

Alice walked beetween the glass trees. She wasn't going to any sort of destination, rather, she was walking kind of randomly in the forest.

She wasn't worried about getting lost, the island was too small for that.

While walking, Alice thought. Because that was what humans did.

At first, she thought about the message she and Mirror had found in that chest.

From the few things she understood, this little text was recounting in a few lines the live of the person who created the forest of glass.

At first, the woman was happy with her creation. She could be happy here, even if the part about selling your soul seemed...ominous, to say the least.

But then, the paradise the woman had created turned into some kind of hell. Everything turned into glass, or dissapeared entierly.

In the end the creator herslef turned into a statued made of glass.

What was the lesson to take from this story ?

That, even if you what you want is just to be left alone, reality will always catch up to you.

And reality will be merciless.

Alice felt depressed.

Then, she thought about some other things. She thought about the giant mirror placed somewhere in the forest, she thought about the cut in her right arm, she thought about Mirror's unnatural strenght... she thought about a lot of things.

But mostly, she asked herself: Why didn't I kill myslef already ?

Alice's life had always been horrible, and since she got teleported in that forest made of glass, things had gotten even worse.

Before, it always seemed like she had a way out of her situation. Nobody was immortal, after all. Not even the members of her family.

But now...

She was on a island flying in the middle of nowhere, with no natural ressources to be found.

One of her reflection tried to kill her not even an hout ago, and the other was acting like she was her best friend.

Apparently, the island also had the power to turn people into statue of glass under certain circumstances Alice was unaware of.

Alice was thirsty.

Alice was hungry.

Alice was injured.

Alice was tired.

More than that, she was unable to understand any of what was happening: Why was she here ? Had someone carried her here, or was it some kind of supernatural event ? Why were her reflections able to pass through mirrors ? Where was she, exactly ? In another planet of the universe, or in another dimension ? Was she even alive ? Was this a simulation happening in her brain ?

Why was all this crap happening to her ?

Alice had no way to answer these questions.

Maybe she didn't even wanted to hear the answers.

A part of her in her knew that the forest of glass was only the beginning . That forest, where she witnessed a murder and several supernatural events, was only the start of her misery.

The start of a long and harrowing journey.

But why ?

Why would she accept that ?

Alice stopped.

After walking randomly, she reached the northest part of the island. One more step, just one more step, and she would fall.

Her life would end.

No more pain, no more mysteries, none of that trash.

Up there, she may even be able to know everything.

What was the point of living anyway ?

Sure, Mirror would be sad if she died, but it was Alice's life. It was her choice.

Alice was on the edge. She was centimeters away from a lethal fall.

She took her decision.

She was going to jump.

"Goodbye, uncaring world."

A voice coming from nowhere suddenly replied.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

"Mirror ?"

Alice looked around, but no one was there.

"Who are you ?"

No reply, again, and there was nobody in sight. Had she imagined the voice ? Was her thirst already making her crazy ?

Alice laughed.

"I don't know who you are, but if you think just talking to me is going to stop me, you're wrong. Look at me, I'm going to kill myself before your eyes. I'm going to jump."

The strange voice from before replied again:

"You're not going to jump."

"I am."

"No, you're not."

Alice closed her eyes and shut her ears. This way, she wouldn't step back.

She focused all of her mental strenght. This was the end of her story. Today, she was going to die.

She took a step forward...

...and opened her eyes, surprised by the fact that she wasn't falling.

When she opened her eyes, she noticed that she was facing the forest instead of facing the endless blue sky. She took a step in the wrong direction.

"What the hell ? I was facing the opposite direction !"

The strange voice laughed.

"Yeah, but you turned around before taking a step forward !"

"What ? I totally didn't do that !"

"Then how do you explain the fact that you're actually not falling to your death right now ?"

Alice thought for a bit, before coming to a harrowing inference:

"You controlled my body ?"

"What ? Your body ? It's mine !"

"Huh ?"

"Besides, you wanted to kill yourslef, if I'm not mistaken ? Then, you certainly don't mind giving your body to me ?"

"I does ! You demon !"

"I'm not a demon !"

"Alice ? I searched you everywhere !"

The young girl suddenly turned towards the new voice. It was Mirror's voice.

"Are you fine ? Why are you talking to yourslef ?"

"I wasn't talking to myslef, I was talking to that damn voice...well, ignore that. I'm fine."

"Are you sure you're fine ? You don't look like you are."

Alice smiled.

"I'm fine. I was just... admiring the view. This blue sky is beautiful, don't you agree ?"
