Back in the early days of men, there was the freedom to wield magic.
It was seen as a blessing to have the gift of its power. Magic could heal just as it could destroy, and it was rarely used for the latter.
There was being who were able to become magic itself--the Creatures of Power. Their entire being could be changed to a form of pure energy unlike anything else. The Gods were praised if someone in a family was one of these powerful beings.
Mankind had been using magic before they could even write. For the longest of times, they knew the dangers but never sought to use it for malicious purposes. But humans are tainted beings. No matter what, a darkness will pull someone in, one way or another.
A man named Danmosi (Ukefian for "Fortune") and his wife Agatha, a Lightning Creature of Power, decided that the seats of power must be changed. With absolute control came absolute power. So they planned their attack, starting with the burning of Bniem Gumr (Great City). The city was in ruins within 16 hours.
The destruction of Bniem Gumr caused everything to spiral out of control. Danmosi raised an army within a day and using magic, traveled from place to place to rain destruction. The people barely knew what happened before their town was destroyed. Any survivors either fled or were captured and tortured by Agatha.
In the Fields of Truth, survivors from the burning of Bniem Gumr founded a small village--Ewf (Ash). It was here that the Keepers of Peace were formed. This group of powerful mages and enchantresses was some of the most clever and powerful people in the world and their small force headed out to fight back again Danmosi.
Battles raged for twenty years. In the end, the Keepers of Peace, with the help of fallen rulers, forced Danmosi's forces into The Realm of Chaos. In the Battle of Power, Danmosi and Agatha were defeated and killed, their forces disappearing into the mountains.
Recovery started with the reconstruction of Bniem Gumr. While this happened, the Great Council was held with the Keepers of Peace and the rulers of all the countries of Ukef. The rulers agreed that the Keepers of Peace would be seen as the utmost authority on magic and they were given a territory in the east called Zuwkal (Wisdom).
To prevent another magical uprising, the Keepers set out new rules with the leaders. Anyone who had the desire to wield magic must go through rigorous testing, on both mental and physical levels. Then the person in question would be tested for what magic they would be permitted to use. Anyone found practicing magic illegally would be arrested, tried, and punished accordingly.
The second thing put in place was much worse--all Creatures of Power, by order of the Keepers, must die. After Agatha, the Keepers of Peace said they were too dangerous and that their side of pure magic was beastly. Uncontrollable. Deadly.
So the Creatures of Power were rounded up and killed--how, no one knows. Both children and adults were slain. "It is for the good of humanity" The Keepers said.
For several years there were many uprisings against the Keepers, led by those who grew up using magic freely. But like the Creatures of Power, the rebellious people slowly died out until there was almost none left.
In certain places in the world, they say there are spots untouched by the Keepers' control. Magic flows freely and whispers of the Creatures is heard on the wind.
But the elders have begun warning that these places are rapidly dying out...
