As they worked together, Kara's ability to locate him had improved, and her eyes had become used to his fluid motions. She fired the shurikens quickly out of instinct, intending not to hurt him but rather to make a point. She let go of the last one and sprinted to the side. But she wasn't quick enough to evade him.
He pulled her off her feet by putting his arm around her waist and lowered her to the ground. Even though he had lately given her more kicks to the behind than she could count, he had never fallen to the ground with her. Now, when he crouched over her, placing his fists next to her head and his thighs in between hers, she found herself gazing into his crimson eyes. Even though they didn't contact, the heat from him caused her body to melt as if they were flesh and bone.
Looking down at the blood that was dripping from the scrape on his muscular bicep, he muttered, "You got a little close on that last one."
