The man's determined expression reminded Yohana of someone. This exact scene with that man spreading his arms to the sides was familiar.

That person's face was not Niels', and his voice was different from Niels'. His hair wasn't red, and his eyes weren't brown.

Yohana remembered what Fabian had told her before about Niels. His scholar brother came to the Reinhard manor when Niels was shot to death. Adelwin said something about exchanging souls. It worked similarly to how Yohana and Runa could swap souls, but the spell that Adelwin cast didn't require the other party to die just yet. They also didn't have to kill each other to activate the spell.
In other words, Adelwin was placing Niels' wandering soul into the soon-to-be empty body of a dying person. "Yohana! It's me. It's me."
He repeated those words as if Yohana would immediately recognize him. To her surprise, he was right.
