Elijah felt like his heart just stopped right then and there. He had prepared himself for this painful truth but he didn't expect it to be this difficult to accept.
"Forgive me, child, was that too heavy to process? I shouldn't have told you that." Vale's face showed deep regret, and it was clear to Elijah that she wanted to escape the responsibility of dropping the bomb on him.
"Why was she looking around the manor across from the Reinhard manor? Doesn't she want to return to work? That manor has been empty, and I doubt that they need any maid right now," said Vale, diverting the topic to something else.
But Elijah still couldn't wrap his head around Vale's words. His jaws were open, and his eyes widened. Vale could feel Elijah's arm tensing. The consequences of her loose mouth had only sipped into her conscience.
Vale felt suffocated. She looked around and let go of Elijah's arm, who was still standing still, frozen.
