The carriage came to a sudden stop, causing Fabian to nearly jump from his seat. He squinted and peered out the window, demanding, "What happened?"
The driver rushed over to the carriage and crumpled his hat as he removed it, then explained, "Your Grace, there is someone..."
Laurens, who was inside the carriage with Fabian, couldn't contain his curiosity. He hopped out and quickly assessed the situation. Upon returning, he reported, "Your Grace, this man claims you know him, and he refuses to leave until you speak with him."
Sighing in exasperation, Fabian exited the carriage to confront the person who had resorted to such an uncivilized method to gain his attention. He wondered why the man hadn't chosen a more conventional way of getting in touch.
But as he laid eyes on the person who had brought the carriage to a halt, Fabian's frustration turned into understanding. With a hint of surprise, he uttered the man's name, "Niels."
