Chapter 110 - Yohana’s Past

The day of the incident unfolded like countless others, Yohana's footsteps leading her to Per's humble abode, nestled in quiet seclusion.

In him, she found a mentor whose teachings were as profound as they were challenging to grasp.

A skilled herbalist, Per's wisdom was abundant, his expertise etched within the pages of a book that chronicled the intricacies of herbs and their properties.

Despite his brilliance, his explanations often resembled a puzzle, the pieces requiring careful assembly within her mind.

His method, unconventional yet effective, was recorded meticulously. Each page of the tome bore sketches – detailed renderings of herbs, their leaves and petals meticulously drawn.

Beside each illustration, inked words described their names, benefits, and the consequences of specific pairings. Per's extraordinary memory allowed him to replicate an herb's likeness after only a single glance.

Under his direct guidance, Yohana applied her committed memorization, tending to ailments as his apprentice. Draped in a headscarf that concealed her striking silver hair, she sought anonymity, avoiding the scrutiny that came with her unique appearance.

As their day of tending to the afflicted drew to a close, the usual tranquility was shattered by a burgeoning tumult.

Whispers in the wind carried tales of a voracious fire that had consumed Nina's dwelling, flames gnawing at its walls and memories alike.

Per's swift intuition took over, his fingers finding their way to Yohana's wrist, pulling her along in his determined stride. The path they tread led away from the clamor to the sanctuary of his secluded dwelling, a refuge shielded from the prying eyes of the outside world.

Yohana's memories of that moment were etched with a vivid urgency, a pulsating rhythm that matched her racing heart. The news had jolted her senses, leaving her momentarily paralyzed in shock.

The world seemed to hold its breath, time suspended in a tense pause. Abruptly, Per's insistent grip tore her from her stupor, propelling her forward.

Per guided her into a small storage room. Yohana's pulse echoed in her ears as she found herself concealed beneath the shelter of a cupboard.

"Don't utter a word until I signal," he instructed, his index finger pressed to his lips in a gesture of utmost secrecy.

Bathed in the muted glow of Per's small chamber, Yohana's eyes quickly adjusted to the dim illumination. The flickers of light painted delicate shadows across the room's modest furnishings.

Time seemed suspended for mere moments before the air was shattered by an abrupt thud against the door. The intrusion was sudden, and the chamber's sanctity was violated by the presence of two imposing figures.

Fear held Yohana in its grip, her senses heightened, and her breath caught in her throat as she bore witness to the unfolding scene.

Her heart pounded a wild rhythm against her ribs as the two intruders set their sights on Per. The sight of the assault gripped her, and she instinctively clamped her hand over her mouth, quelling any potential sound that might betray her presence.

Tears traced silent paths down her cheeks, her face of anguish and terror.

A guttural voice, hoarse with demand, sliced through the air. "Where is she?"

The second man, bearing the marks of impatience, unleashed violence upon Per. The cruel impact of his kick connected with Per's face, and blood spilled, staining the wooden floor below.

Per's vulnerability was stark, his lack of combat experience painfully evident as he crumpled, unable to fend off his assailants.

In the midst of this assault, Yohana's eyes widened as she recognized something that sent chills down her spine.

The gleam of steel, the sound of a blade being unsheathed – the men were not just any common thugs. They were royal knights, their regal stature an undeniable marker of their status.

Her mind raced. Queen Charlotte's involvement was undeniable, yet an incongruence gnawed at her understanding.

Weren't royal knights dispatched to the Reinhard manor under the king's orders? The puzzle pieces were misaligned, casting doubt over the situation's true intent.

Was the king also involved in this sinister equation?

As Yohana wrestled with her fear and urgency, the scene before her unfolded with chilling clarity. The royal knights were relentless in their pursuit of information. Each blow they dealt reverberated through the air, a chilling chorus of aggression that seemed to demand Yohana's whereabouts.

Per's resilience waned beneath their assault, his body succumbing to unconsciousness. The rhythm of violence ceased, replaced by a silence that held its own gravity. Amidst the stillness, their voices carried.

"It doesn't seem that he knows," the hoarse voice remarked, a note of frustration underscoring his words.

"Maybe she has run away again," the other replied.

With their purpose unresolved, the royal knights withdrew from Per's dwelling. Yohana's heart raced as she watched them go.

In the aftermath, Yohana's focus shifted, a torrent of urgency propelling her into action. She moved with the precision of a healer, a woman possessed by a resolute determination to salvage what remained. She assessed Per's condition, her touch gentle yet steady.

Per's pulse, a fragile thread connecting him to life, served as a beacon amidst the chaos. A glimmer of relief pierced the tension as she confirmed that he still clung to existence.

Yohana orchestrated her makeshift remedies, combining herbs with a deft hand. The liquid she concocted was administered with urgency as she guided Per's head and coaxed the healing elixir down his throat.

Blankets were requisitioned, tenderly cushioning his head as Yohana tended to his wounds. Her fingers moved with practiced grace, each touch a symphony of care and concern.

As the veil of night still clung to the world, Per woke up. His eyes blinked open to a scene that bore witness to the aftermath of chaos.

Yohana, her face etched with both relief and sorrow, hovered by his side. Tears glistened in the subdued light. Her voice quivered as she whispered apologies.

Per's gaze swept across the disarray. He spoke with a resolute urgency, his voice a quiet but firm echo in the room's fragile quietude. "We can't linger here any longer. It's not safe. Let's go."

"Where would we go? You're injured, Per."

A stubborn fire blazed in Per's eyes. "Anywhere but here. This place is compromised. Safety lies in distance, Yohana. We must put space between us and this peril."

Yohana pleaded to anchor Per here until he had fully recovered. But Per's resolve was unyielding.

"Waiting is not an option for us," he asserted.

The two embarked on a hasty task of gathering their essential belongings. The herbs that Per had spent years cultivating, his invaluable journals, and a selection of practical clothing were all swiftly gathered and packed into a small bag.

As Per's strength permitted, Yohana provided support. Their journey led them away from the familiar, the forest fading into the distance as they ventured in the opposite direction of the town square.

The path they tread upon was one that spoke of uncertainty and risk, a trail marked not by well-trodden steps but by their own resilience.

Days blended into nights and weeks. The inns that offered brief respites became their sanctuaries. Each stop was a chance to recuperate. The journey carved lines of fatigue upon their faces.

Finally, after a stretch of time that felt both ephemeral and eternal, they arrived at Adenau, a town known for its transient inhabitants and the cloak of anonymity it offered.

Here, they chose to pause their journey, at least for a while, finding refuge in the unfamiliar faces that populated the town's streets.

Drawing upon their extensive knowledge of herbs, the duo seamlessly transitioned into a new chapter of life. Their skills as herbalists garnered them a reputation within the local community.

With each remedy they offered, with each ailment they alleviated, they earned not only a livelihood but also a place of belonging.

Within the walls of the rented house they called home, Per and Yohana took on the guise of a familial relationship to shield their true identities.

However, little did Yohana realize at that moment that her ordeal had only just begun.
