Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Taking Command

After seeing the armor and its markings Adam, along with his now super brain, was quickly able to deduce he was brought back in a SPARTAN body on the flagship Infinity. His name matched his own however he did notice rather than a last name he had a number instead. Rather than Adam Young he was now Adam-161.

Just as he stood up another flood of memories or rather knowledge flooded into his brain, this caused a migraine like none he felt before, his head felt like a balloon being filled with water. Grabbing his head in pain as he fell onto one knee, Adam powered thru the pain. As he felt his consciousness fade he saw a door open and a middle aged woman with blonde hair rushed in.

Looking down he noticed a small pool of blood, reaching his hand to wipe his nose he saw blood covering his fingers. Years of knowledge and combat experience poured into his mind, the millions of combat simulations etched into his brain and muscle memory. After what felt like hours his brain finally processed the data and experience, thus allowing the migraine to subside.

"Commander! Commander are you alright? It should go away in a moment. It's just a side effect of the brain processing your simulated battle experience. Usually it's not so bad but you did put more hours in the simulator than most anyone else in one session, one or two hours daily tops for most but you have been running simulations for months. It's a lot for the brain to take in, had you not been a SPARTAN you probably would've had a brain aneurysm."

"Ugh, can you shut the hell up for 5 minutes." Adam said hoarsely since her shouting then incessant talking was just too painful to allow for now. Immediately the woman took on an angered expression after being told to shut up.

She was just so surprised that even after an issue in the download of the personality matrix the man awoke. What was supposed to be installed never made it into the system, so she along with the others were unsure of just what was inside driving him.

As the pain subsided Adam finally stood up, walked over to his armor and activated it. With just a touch the suit turned into a liquid metal and enveloped Adams naked body.

Once he was fully enveloped the suit took shape into its standard issue Mjolnir Mark VII look.

"Report." Adam commanded as he watched the systems boot up on the power armors HUD on the visor.

Immediately upon hearing his request the woman's dissatisfaction vanished and was replaced by a more serious, business-like look as she answered, "Uh, we are currently dead in the water so to speak. Little more than half of the crew escaped in the initial attack. Power systems are on but have an unstable linking with the engines, shield generators as well as various internal systems. Life support systems are mostly on but have shown instability due fluctuating power signals from the energy supply. The ships tactical AI is down thus many of the ships functions have gone off line. We are working to correct and find the issue. Sir."

"So no defense. Offensive capabilities? Location? Enemy?" Adam asked hoping to get a general idea of where they were. He didn't want this show to be over so soon.

"Offensive not much just the M965 Fortress 70mm guns till we can get the power issues resolved. The location is unknown, the navigation array is down, all we have is the magnetic sonar. Enemy we were fighting Cortana and some of the Banished. We escaped at the last moment thru Slipspace, but it was a blind jump so I'm actually surprised we are even alive and didn't end up in the middle of a star, planet, black hole...."

"Alright, alright shit... Do you always talk so much? Nevermind, don't answer that. Have you tried power cycling the reactor and ships systems? The sudden jump into slipspace while being jammed may have thrown the system communication out of sync thus causing power failure to continue even out of range of the jammer." Adam asked after putting thought into what he was reading in the ship's automated battle and system logs and what he was being told.

After thinking for a moment the woman answered, "Well I am not sure since I'm not the one in command, you would need to talk to them."

Giving a nod in acknowledgement Adam asked as he left the room, "So who's in charge?" However the response stopped him dead in his tracks.

"Well that would be you. We just exited Slipspace just as you woke up, me and my fellow researchers were going over reports submitted from the crew around the ship. So since you're awake this is your ship and crew Commander, Sir."

"Talk about waking up on the wrong side of the bed," Adam mumbled, inaudible to anyone besides his suit. Just as Adam took a deep breath a female voice within the suit was heard.

"Welcome Adam, I am your personal AI assistant codenamed Eve. Is there something I can assist with?" Although this shocked him a bit it was also a pleasant surprise.

"Eve, I need you to bring up the intercom system throughout the ship. I need to be heard by everyone. Also I need you to unlock any doors that lead to the environmental suits throughout the ship. Can you do that?" Adam asked after quickly thinking the ship was the priority now.

"Affirmative Adam. If you give me a moment I will link up with the ship." After a few moments Eve continued, "Comms are now active and linked to the suit.'"

"To anyone hearing my voice, this is Commander Adam. I need everyone to head to the nearest environmental suit storage location to you. In 30 minutes the ships systems will be brought offline as well as all power systems. We are rebooting the ship to hopefully realign the systems and bring everything back online power wise. As you know it will take about an hour for everything to cycle back up, all life support and artificial gravity will cease ship wide. So everyone has 30 minutes to put on an environment suit before all systems are down, time starts now so people move out." Adam announced over the PA system as he made his way to the command deck.

He didn't need an escort thanks to Eve giving him a mini map of the ship showing him where to go. The woman who he left behind was stunned by everything going on for a few moments until she realized she needed to quickly get into a suit herself.

After arriving at the bridge he found two men working at separate terminals in environmental suits, upon hearing him enter and seeing Adams tall frame and SPARTAN armor they knew this was the commander.

"Sir, we have prepared the systems for a full hard power cycle. Just awaiting your command, Sir." They both saluted as they stood at attention at the terminals.

"Very good soldiers, the others have 5 minutes till we restart the systems. The emergency broadcast system should be active. Make sure to announce ship wide the countdown, once we reset we will lose all systems including the emergency systems until everything powers back up, hopefully. I don't want any of our crew dying a stupid death." Adam replied after returning the salute.

"Yes Sir." After receiving their orders they began final preparations for a full system reboot.

Meanwhile down on a little blue planet within an office building in Washington DC, a middle aged bald black man with an eye patch over his left eye and long black trenchcoat was reviewing recent reports submitted by one of his research teams.

A sudden knock at the door caused him to quickly close the file and slip it into a hidden compartment then replace it with another file. After checking a small monitor and seeing who it was, he pressed a button to unlock the door to allow entry.

The door opened and a young brunette woman in a tactical uniform, which showed off her fitness and curves perfectly, entered the room with a tablet in hand.

"Director Fury, there's something you should see. About 15 minutes ago a deep space probe orbiting Neptune picked up an anomaly." The woman stated as she handed the tablet showing different pictures of a large object floating in space.

"And what am I supposed to be looking at here Agent Hill?" Fury asked as he swiped thru various photos till he stopped at a thermal image. Although it still wasn't very clear, unlike the other photos, distinct lines of a ship could barely be seen.

"A ship, Sir. A massive ship, origins unknown. No communication has been attempted from their end, however I'm told the center that had first located the ship has been trying to establish communication currently, so far no response."

Instantly Kree came to Fury's mind or even the Skrull, however this ship, although they could barely make it out didn't look like a ship either of the races Nick Fury knew about. He had been there when the Kree attacked and watched as Captain Marvel took the ships out. Carol had informed Fury of various species and empires across the galaxy, this ship reminded him of a reaver pirate ship.

"Stop all attempts at communication, have our people take over the facility and see if we can't get a better look, bring Stark in if needed. He may be able to get better eyes on just what we are dealing with quicker. I don't need a bunch of smart idiots bringing an alien invasion down on us." Fury responded immediately.

"Right away sir. Agent Coulson was dispatched immediately upon our receiving the intel and is already en route. I will make sure he knows your orders myself." Maria Hill answered and quickly left the office.

"Make sure he keeps us up to date at all times. No one below level 7 clearance is to hear a word about this matter." Fury called after her just as she reached the door.

"That will limit who I can send, unless I pull Romanoff off her assignment in keeping an eye on Banner." Hill stated as she held the door knob ready to exit as soon as she knew what Fury wanted.

"No pull Agent 13, Banner is slippery and Black Widow can shadow him without giving herself away. Captain Rodgers seems to be settling in now so we can pull her for a few days. I have some plans for the Captain anyway so I'll just move those plans up a bit giving Agent 13 plenty of time to help Coulson."

After a nod of confirmation Agent Hill left to issue the orders. While Fury studied the image of the ship with much thought.

After Thor and the destroyer leveled a town in New Mexico it seemed like everything was heading to hell. He had members of the Security Council breathing down his neck regarding the Hulk incident in Harlem then the incident with Thor had many on the council scared. They began pushing harder on researching the cube, they wanted to reinvent HYDRA weaponry used during the war to give them an edge after being shown they were currently outclassed and outmatched.

This had caused some hiccups in the current research with the cube, power surges were sporadically occurring after they began performing additional tests. Doctor Selvig had reported strange behavior from the cube causing them to dial back on tests. This was the report he had been reading before Maria Hill interrupted him.

As he studied the photo he couldn't help but link the ship with the cube, 'The question is who is behind it, the ship interfacing and activating the cube or the cube itself.' Fury couldn't help but think as he reached into his pocket to pull out an old pager.

It was given to him by Carol Danvers before leaving to patrol the galaxy to fight tyranny and oppression on a galactic scale, it would signal her that the Earth was in danger thus allowing her time to return as soon as possible.

He debated whether to call for her aid or not, since they had no way of getting to the ship to investigate, ultimately he decided to wait and see. So far the object has not shown any signs of activity or movement, after several hours they should get a better idea of the situation and then he could decide if Captain Marvel was needed.

Fury sat back down behind his desk and after initiating the door lock he pulled a hidden cable from a compartment on his desk and attached it to the tablet left behind by Maria Hill.

After connecting the cable, Fury pulled out a phone hidden in the same compartment and dialed a number, "Talos, I need your people to take a look at the photos I'm sending over. I need to know what we are up against. Highest priority." After saying what needed to be said Fury hung up and replaced the phone back and unplugged the cable from the tablet then closed the secret compartment.

Looking at the folder he had placed on the desk as Maria Hill walked in, Fury released a sigh, then a determined glint flashed across his eyes as he read the title on the folder.

'Avengers Initiative'
