Chapter 35 - Complicated?

As Chloe and Charlie sat at Mrs. Brit's, basking in the afterglow of the necklace exchange, an air of contentment surrounded them. The crowd's applause had died down, but their hearts raced, both unsure of how to navigate this newfound "more than friends" territory.

Chloe couldn't help but steal glances at Charlie. His thoughtful expression hinted at a whirlwind of emotions beneath the surface. She had longed for this moment, but now that it had arrived, doubts and fears crept in. She wondered if she had misinterpreted Charlie's intentions.

Charlie, on the other hand, wrestled with his own emotions. He had discovered Chloe's diary, the heartfelt words etched in her handwriting. The realization that Chloe had feelings for him weighed heavily on his conscience. He had always valued their friendship and didn't want to risk damaging it. Yet, he couldn't ignore the growing tension between them.

Mrs. Brit, their ever-watchful eye, approached their table with a warm smile. "Congratulations, you two," she said, her eyes twinkling with wisdom. "Friendship is a beautiful thing."

Chloe and Charlie exchanged uneasy glances. "Thank you, Mrs. Brit," Chloe replied, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

Mrs. Brit leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Remember, dear, true friendship can withstand anything. Cherish what you have."

With that, she left them to their thoughts. Chloe and Charlie continued their meal, both lost in their own worlds. Chloe struggled to shake off her insecurities, while Charlie grappled with the weight of Chloe's unspoken feelings.

As they finished their meal, Chloe mustered the courage to break the silence. "Charlie," she began tentatively, "about the necklace and what you said... I want you to know that I value our friendship above everything else."

Charlie nodded, relief washing over him that Chloe had initiated the conversation. "Chloe, I do too. I've always cherished our friendship, and I don't want anything to change that."

Their eyes locked, and in that moment, they silently vowed to navigate this uncharted territory together, with honesty and care for their friendship.

Charlie couldn't help but feel a little confused as he looked at Chloe. Teasing her, he said, "Well, well, well, look who's trying to be cute. Seen anyone look like a mole while trying to be adorable? there she is." He pointed at her with a mocking laugh.

Chloe, now slightly offended by Charlie's teasing, responded by giving him a grumpy look and lightly hitting him on the shoulder. The hit was enough to hurt a little, and Charlie let out an exaggerated "Ouch!" as he leaned out of her reach. They both burst into laughter, the tension slowly dissipating.

As their laughter subsided, it became clear that the bond between them was firmly rooted in friendship and nothing more. Chloe decided to change the subject. "So, how are the preparations for the Talent event going?" she inquired, pausing expectantly.

Charlie hesitated for a moment, not sure how Chloe would react to his admission. "Well," he began cautiously, "it's going well, except..." He trailed off, fearing Chloe's playful teasing.

"Except what?" Chloe demanded, her curiosity piqued. "Spit it out."

Charlie, with a hint of embarrassment, continued, "Well, there was just a tiny mistake with the name and age."

"What?" Chloe demanded again, now more anxious than ever.

Charlie took a deep breath. "Promise me you won't laugh," he implored.

Chloe couldn't help but chuckle at his request. "Wait, don't tell me you still don't know how to spell your own name?" she teased.

Charlie gave her a daring look, then finally admitted, "I accidentally typed 'Chug' in the name section instead of 'Charlie.'"

Upon hearing this, Chloe burst into laughter. "Chug?" she exclaimed between giggles. "What kind of a funny name is that? It sounds like the name of a mischievous little boy!"

Charlie, playfully tense, responded, "I already told you it was a mistake. Besides, I have the best name there is."

Chloe retorted, "I don't even know why your parents decided to give you such a name. Your personality is nothing like what you'd expect from someone named Charlie."

"Just like yours," Charlie shot back with a grin. "You're quite the opposite."

"Okay, fine, fine," Chloe conceded. "If it was a mistake, why didn't you correct it before sending it?" She was still trying to find a way to tease Charlie.

Charlie explained, "I had already hit send before I noticed the mistake. I tried correcting it, but to no avail."

Chloe accepted his explanation with a mischievous smile. "Okay, Chug," she said, emphasizing the new nickname, "then what about the age?"

Charlie confessed, "It said that if you're under eighteen, you need a guardian's support. You know the kind of guardian I have, so I had no choice but to write that I was eighteen."

Chloe's curiosity persisted. "Why didn't you tell Dad?" she asked seriously. "He would have been more than happy to help."

"I didn't want to bother him," Charlie admitted. "I didn't want it to seem like you owed me anything."

Chloe smiled warmly, but she couldn't resist playfully hitting him on the shoulder again. "Don't be a jerk," she scolded. "We're here for you."

Charlie's smile widened. "Yeah, yeah, but it's already done, and there's no turning back now. Besides, I'm only two years backwards."

Chloe conceded, "Yes, but it still counts. Now, you'll have to go out there with a completely different identity."

Charlie sighed, feeling a bit down. "Yeah," he agreed. "I know it isn't ideal, but it's the only chance I've got. After all, it's the same person on the inside; that's all that matters."

Later that day, as they walked home together, Chloe couldn't resist provoking Charlie by calling him "Chug" all the way to the end of the road where they dispatched.

As Charlie entered his home, he was greeted by an awful sound that resembled a cow mooing. It emanated from Steve's room. Curious, he approached Steve's door, only to see Steve practicing his singing with Madam Gizel sitting down, listening. Charlie intended to offer some assistance but was thwarted when Madam Gizel arrogantly slammed the door shut from inside, preventing him from entering.

This unexpected turn of events changed Charlie's plan. As he walked to his room, he could still hear Steve explaining to Madam Gizel that he couldn't do it. Steve's words couldn't help but amuse Charlie, finding their drama oddly entertaining.

Charlie sat alone in his room, the events of the day weighing on his mind. The playful banter with Chloe had brought joy and laughter, but beneath the surface, a subtle tension lingered. The discovery of Chloe's diary had left an indelible mark, a reminder that their friendship was more complex than he had previously thought.

He couldn't help but replay the contents of that diary in his mind. The poem, with its heartfelt words, had revealed Chloe's true feelings for him. It was a secret she had kept hidden for years, and now, inadvertently, he was privy to her deepest emotions.

Charlie felt a mixture of emotions. On one hand, he was flattered that Chloe had such strong feelings for him. On the other hand, he was troubled by the idea of potentially hurting her by not reciprocating those feelings. He cared about Chloe deeply, and he didn't want to jeopardize their friendship.

As he pondered his own feelings, the image of Richelle floated into his thoughts. His heart skipped a beat whenever he thought of her. Charlie yearned for the day they would finally cross paths again. He longed to show Richelle a side of himself that was different from the one she already knew .He hoped that their meeting would bring new opportunities and experiences once again.

Meanwhile, in her own room, Chloe grappled with her own set of emotions. She had been ecstatic when Charlie had given her the friendship necklace, believing it was a sign that he felt the same way she did. However, his playful teasing about the typo and his reluctance to correct it had left her with doubts.

The diary incident had added to her confusion. She couldn't ignore the feeling that Charlie had seen the poem and, by extension, her true feelings. Chloe worried that it might change the dynamics of their friendship. She cherished their bond and didn't want to lose it because of her uncertain romantic feelings.

The evening sun cast a warm glow through Charlie's window, illuminating his room. It was in this quiet moment of reflection that he made a decision. He couldn't ignore Chloe's feelings, and he couldn't deny his own. It was time to have an open and honest conversation with her, to address the diary, and to discuss the future of their friendship. He just had to find the right time.

And so, with hope and uncertainty in his heart, he prepared to face the truths that had just been pierced in his heart, he was ready to unravel the complexities of their feelings and their friendship in the days to come.
