Chapter 173 - Chapter 171: With One's Hands

Each world has their own specialty. They are completely unique, akin to a fingerprint of a person. There may be similarities, but their essence would be "unique".

The world where I went was one such world.

With a large 'tree' connecting several worlds that are distinct yet similar, it formed a huge connection that spans worlds.

It was an 'unexpected gain' despite my omniscience. Then again, one has to understand that my existence itself, or rather the future I see, is limited based on the actions I make.

Once I deviate from the future I saw, there would be 'new futures' presented in my sight. In turn, it proves that [World Magisters] could rightfully do actions that may contradict their essence. As long as they have seen the future and changed it, the newer set of futures would then appear.

It was similar to the omnipotence paradox that challenges the majesty of God. That question asked whether He could create a stone beyond that of Himself—creating an entity greater than the omnipotent entity.

If He could indeed do the deed, His omnipotence would be questioned.

If He could not do it, His omnipotence would be questioned.

Either way, both lead to a dead end.

Nevertheless, it was a question borne out of humans' limitations. What they would not expect, however, is that omnipotence was beyond one's imagination.

The best explanation would be the Quantum State Theory. There could be two states, one truth and one false, in some circumstances.

In my case, anything I have seen with omniscience could be contradicted with my omnipotence. This shows that only [World Beings] could affect each other—be it against another entity or to oneself.

Just as I was about to move, I saw an interesting bit of information.

Apparently, there were a bunch of people who wanted to kill IX. The idea sounded extremely ridiculous, which then earned the attention of another god who offered their assistance.

Be that as it may, I cannot leave IX's goodwill unattended. Since I noticed that my existence itself was "erased" by IX, or rather his existence, plus my concealment, no other god found out about myself.

This is another favor that I owe to him.

"IX wanted to loaf around… then so be it."

After setting a 'fixed event' in the future, the existence of the people who wanted to target him have been sentenced to an end.

"I need to follow IX's path."

With a thought, my body turned into a shooting star.

Amongst the countless stars, the lights of civilization never went out. This world was developed enough for high-ranking civilizations to prosper. Still, there were civilizations who were not developed enough. They remained hidden under the dark void's veil.

One such civilization lies within two twin planets.

"Phoenixes are born amongst ashes. The seventy-thousand thirty-three blades along with the fallen heroic spirits, forged into the body of the Kami, created the first blade that beheaded countless demons."

In the spacious classroom, the students had their varying reactions. Some listened to the instructor with utmost seriousness, some chose to slack off and sleep, while the others became preoccupied with something in their minds.

"From thereon, the demons descending from Takamagahara were met by their adversities. Humanity was able to put up a strong resistance against the demons known as Kami."

Though only words, the instructor's words finally caught everyone's attention. His seriousness as he continued narrating the history of humanity against the Kami could paint a heroic yet bloody portrait in their minds.

It wasn't determined when it exactly started, but their planet, Izumo, had a sister planet whom the astrologers named "Takamagahara" (lit. Divine Realm of Takama). Once their progress in technology reached a certain extent, humanity's first trip to another planet was enacted.

What they did not expect, however, was the fact that all three astronauts who were sent for the mission died horrifically. A few dozen minutes after their descent to Takamagahara, all that was left were their horrified screams along with several unintelligible noises. It was the scariest thing that the personnel in the command room had heard.

With that incident, the sole government of Izumo prepared countermeasures against enemies of foreign nature.

Unfortunately, the Kami (i.e., demons) were relentless. A few days after Izumo's visit to Takamagahara, they descended in Izumo in the form of 'meteors'. They carried a 'virus' that turned most living beings that inhaled it into undeads.

What was horrifying, however, was the fact that monsters accompanied these meteors.

In view of such a terrifying threat, the countermeasures were placed into order, much to its ineffectiveness.

If it were only the 'virus', Izumo would have been fine. The monsters (Kami) that accompanied it, however, were the major problem. Only artillery and long-ranged lethal strikes were able to take them down.

Not to mention the availability of such weapons, just the fact that they were caught off guard gave the intruders an edge against Izumo.

It seemed as if things wouldn't become even worse, yet it did.

Days after the Kami's descent, the very first recorded 'Sovereign' appeared. It was as if they came out of nowhere, but later investigations found out that these sovereigns were actually denizens of Izumo.

Disregarding this shocking fact, the Sovereign of Revelation (Truth) had the ability to reconstruct anything it understood. It created miracles left and right as it created and destroyed anything out of nowhere.

Izumo's first battle cost them more than 70,000 lives as well as countless collaterals just to take down one being. Even in that state, they were fortunate that they acted decisively, lest everything would have been late.

If the first sovereign was able to fully understand and utilize large-scale lethal weapons, Izumo would have been wiped off the earth.

"Victories and defeats continued to pile up, but everything tips to the scale of humanity."

The instructor sounded hopeful as he said those words.

After humanity took down the first sovereign, they decisively used its body to forge a weapon—a blade for humanity. These swords came to be known as 'Edict Edge'.

These swords gave its holders the abilities of the sovereigns, thus allowing humanity to catch their breath and stand on a better footing against their foreign invaders.

'As expected. They concealed the cruel truth.'

In the middle row, a girl with long purple hair stared at the instructor. It was evident that she paid attention to his words, yet she was inwardly disappointed by the government—no, Izumo's choice.

What the instructor did not say was that every power must come with a price.

The purple-haired girl's father was a wielder of an Edict Edge. It was due to his choice that he could not even spare time to properly raise her.

As for the price…

"Why do we fight, you say? You might still be a bit young to understand it… but if we don't—"

Who will?

Unexpectedly, the straight-honor student, Raiden Mei, slowly fell asleep while thinking about such sentiments.

Dreams are meant to be vague—a byproduct of the brain's operation—but she was suddenly 'awakened' after Mei felt that she was 'falling down'.

"What… is this?"

Mei saw her reflection on the small pool of rainwater. Her image was extremely vivid. She instinctively panicked at first, though she calmed down after looking at her surroundings. It consisted of broken buildings, the smell of blood, and a fuzzy red light from the sky.

'I fell asleep… but why is it vivid?'

She found her explanation soon enough.

'It must be a lucid dream. Is my body beginning to give up.'

Due to her 'studious' trait, she stayed up for several nights revising everything she learned for the semester. It was supposed to be the final year in her high school, hence she wanted to give it her all.

Most importantly, she longed to achieve her long-standing goal: to become the successor of the third Edict Edge, the blade wielded by her father.

No matter how Mei felt neglected, her father's ideal was bright enough to mesmerize her.

"An insurmountable wall."

Just then, a 'person' passed by her ears. She immediately turned around to find him, yet she found no one.

"A wall of despair."

Once more, the person passed by her. This time, however, she caught his white hair on her vision.

"Many conceded to their fates, believing a fight against such a thing was meaningless."

This time, Mei saw the person's back in front of her.

"They accepted the incoming end without showing any of their might. A cowardly act to some, but it was reasonable. Acceptable, even."

The man's words made her unable to speak. It was as if his words itself contained a special charm that made her want to hear more.

"The brightest stars shine in the darkest nights, indeed. That was what separated the one who gave up from the unwilling ones."

Facing the 'strongest' adversary, a select few chose to stand up in the front. That was equivalent to giving the hopeless people their final pillar of hope, reigniting their will to fight—to struggle.

"One must understand that… a crossroad would appear at the most crucial time."

Just then, a deafening rumble appeared in front.

"That—!"

Mei's vision was only sufficient to see a fraction of that 'being', but there was a voice who said that it was a 'huge white whale'. It was extremely huge, to the point it could swallow planets whole.

Even so…

Even so..!

Click-!

It was at this moment did she see that the man's attire was akin to a knight's. The purple cloth surrounding his body gave a sanctimonious aura that would not lose out against the huge monster.

The moment he placed his circular shield down, the deafening sound could no longer affect Mei's hearing.

When the monster stopped 'roaring', the man's shield dispersed into golden motes of light.

"At that point, you must remain convicted in your path. After all, no other person could explain why it was the right path… even if it is for the best of everyone."

"You are…"

"Even if the end does not existEven if you believe that your struggles were nothing but for naught… We must still struggle, don't we?"

Shiing-!

The man brought out a curved blue blade. In his hands, it was as if it contained an endless amount of power.

"For that sliver of chance for salvation… we mustn't deny ours and the others' efforts."

If life does not have a meaning—

Clang-!

—we will create one with our own hands.

With that single sword slash, the towering figure of the Leviathan was split into two.

"If it could not convince you… I will be there with you."

Shiing-!

The moment he sheathed his sword, Mei found out that her dream was broken. She stood up from her seat when she was jolted awake.

Seeing this, the instructor asked curiously:

"What's the matter, Raiden-san?"

"...No. I suddenly recalled something. Apologies, Tanaka-sensei."

"It's fine. Please take your seat."

Due to her reputation as a hardworking student, instructors could not find any fault with her. Even if there were, they would simply let it pass, just like now.

"If life does not have a meaning… creating one with our own hands..?"

Mei was left puzzled and unaware of the changes to come.

*****

"This should work… I think."

After the brief escapade to an interesting world, I returned back to my own. Since I already knew the most crucial nodes of her development—basically the crucial plot points—I could simply go back when that time comes.

That was the greatest cheat code an educator could ever think of.

"Hey, Lili."

"Teacher?"

Currently, we are inside the large airship, Altair. It became the base of operations for everyone who settled the Twilight Syndrome's calamities. Its occupation for thousands was finally put into use as it became a crucial base for the Magician's Society.

It became the transit point to travel to other places instantly, so as to say.

As for its control, it was either left on autopilot or Gareth would pilot it on her own. Sometimes, the others would try their hands on it, too.

"Did I do a good job as a teacher?"

"Ah..?!"

Lili didn't even need a second to reply.

"You are the best teacher I could ever ask for." She said. "Why did the teacher ask me that question?"

"Well…"

I thought for a while before revealing it directly.

"It seems like you will have a junior student to take care of."

"...Teacher has a new student?!"

For the first time in a while, I saw her crimson red pupils shake in surprise.
