Fred and George had initially hoped to quickly master the Descaling Charm to ease their upcoming punishment.
However, after several failed attempts, they gave up entirely when Albert casually pointed out, "Filch probably won't let you use magic anyway."
The following day in Charms class, Professor Flitwick reviewed the Lumos spell from the previous lesson. While a few Gryffindor students succeeded, most Hufflepuff's struggled.
Afterwards, he introduced the counter-spell, Nox, demonstrating its ability to extinguish magical and ordinary lights by snuffing out a candle with a flick of his wand.
"For extinguishing fires, Nox is quite effective, though putting out larger flames is more challenging," Flitwick explained, leaving the rest of the lesson for practice.
Albert, ever quick to learn, successfully extinguished his wand's light and even a candle flame. After several tries, Lee Jordan joined in, following Albert's lead to test the charm on candles.
According to Professor Flitwick's description, extinguishing a blazing fire is more difficult than extinguishing a glowing spell.
"Why is this so difficult?" Fred groaned, still struggling with Lumos alongside a handful of classmates. By the end of class, only three students managed to extinguish their wand light successfully, including Cedric.
Before dismissing the class, Flitwick assigned an essay comparing Lumos and Nox. The report, due Monday, had to be two feet long, causing George to mutter, "Two feet? Flitwick's gone mad!"
Writing essays proved daunting for first-year students unfamiliar with quills, but Albert reassured the group.
"It's simple. Write about the spells' origins, describe your learning experience, and use the library to fill in details. Finish with a summary, and you'll hit two feet easily."
"Really? That simple?" Lee asked skeptically not beleiving the resident genius.
"Wait until you start," Angelina said sarcastically. "You'll see how 'simple' it is then".
As they debated the homework, a Hufflepuff student interjected, questioning Albert's advice. Fred and George responded playfully, throwing their arms around the student, who quickly retreated. Cedric stepped in, gently scolding the twins.
"We didn't do anything, Diggory. We were just having a friendly conversation with him," the twins said, each slinging an arm over the other's shoulder.
"Right? We didn't scare him. Who knew he'd get so nervous all of a sudden?" Fred added, grinning mischievously.
"By the way, when do we start flight lessons?" Angelina asked suddenly.
"It's not clear yet," Fred replied after a moment's thought. "Apparently, Gryffindor first-years will find out through the lounge bulletin board. It's supposed to be on Thursday afternoon.
Oh, and Charlie's been recruiting new players. If you're into Quidditch, you should give it a shot. Reserve players get to practice with broomsticks, though becoming a full-time player depends entirely on skill."
"When is that happening?" Angelina asked eagerly.
"This afternoon," George answered without hesitation. "You can talk to Charlie at the Quidditch pitch."
"You're not serious about joining the team, are you?" Alia asked, looking at her roommate in surprise.
"Well," Angelina said with a determined smile, "I want to give it a try."
The day ended with Transfiguration, where Professor McGonagall reminded everyone to keep practicing turning matches into needles. "Your progress will be checked next week," she warned, hinting at consequences for those who failed.
