Chapter 19 - Biting the Hand That Feeds Part 1

"God level combat?.." Jun whispered to himself. "It wants us to fight that thing? That's insanity."

An explosion sounded off as a  flaming ball of energy collided with a nearby building and sent burning debris scattering across the area.

"Damn it!" Jun dove behind a turned over car to avoid the incoming rubble.

He could feel his heart racing as the possibilities of what to do were quickly dwindling to none. Angels, they could handle. Even archangels. But a God...what could one possibly do against something of this magnitude?

Jun looked to his right as Axel had jumped down from the burning building right next to him. He still had his glare fixated toward the rampaging God of Conquest not far away from where they stood.

"Isn't it beautiful...um...I'm sorry, I legit forgot what your name was. Chris?" Axel spoke in an awe stricken tone.

"It's Jun. And what are you referring to? That nightmarish creature over there?" Jun replied in disbelief.

"Look past the multiple eyes, the thick claws, sinister face...and you'll see it."

"See WHAT?"

"Pure unadulterated power." Axel said with a fierce hunger in his eyes.

< God level fight phase 1: You must break the outer defense. This is not the God itself, but rather a proxy of it known as a Beast of Apocalypse. If you are to have any chance of actually reaching the God, you must first push through this field of fire. >

"There's no chance we could make it through that." Jun said.

"I'm going to break through in no time." Axel said at the exact same time.

They stopped and both looked at each other. "Wait, you can hear it too?" They asked each other.

"Huh. I guess it makes sense since we're all connected to the same system." Jun mumbled.

"In any case, I'm getting to work. Don't think you're gonna beat me to it!" Axel said as he was getting ready to take off.

"This isn't a fight we can win, Axel. Especially by ourselves." said Jun.

Axel held up his blade between him and Jun. "Don't forget that these weapons weren't meant to only slay low level angels. I knew you guys were weak, but I thought you were a bit less of a bitch than that." Axel spared no more of his time on Jun as he took off towards the inner parts of the city.

"You idiot! This is beyond something we can accomplish without the others!" Jun called after him.

Axel turned back with his signature smile on his face. "Isn't that the fun part?! There's no challenge if it was easy!"

He turned a corner and left Jun in his wake.

Axel came upon a building that was collapsing from a recent attack. He jumped up and bounced from one falling rubble to the next to gain height. He hopped off the last piece and went fully airborne.

< Activating ability: Putrid Wings >

A pair of dark decrepit wings appeared on Axel's back as they flapped and propelled him through the air with great force. What it comes to abilities, all you have to do is think it and the system will do the rest.

He looked out the side of his eye as he rocketed through the air and saw an incoming energy ball that was on a collision course with the building he was about to land on.

< Activating ability: Dark Barrier >

Static discharges emitted off Axel's body as a almost translucent sphere flickered in place around him. He landed upon the roof of the building and he was illuminated in red light right before the blast slammed into the top of the building.

As the building began to give way, out of the flame and smoke launched Axel, propelled by the force of the explosion while protected by the barrier. He was now being launched in the direction of the Beast of Apocalypse.

"Awww yeah, this is how you clear some distance!"

Despite his immature attitude and one track mind, Axel was truly a force to be reckoned with. Having defeated scores of angels and lesser archangels, he had tapped much deeper into the connection the God Core System provided than most other known slayers. As of this moment, he had access to 15 abilities which was unheard of for even freelancers. The average slayer had 3-5 if that. Axel's hunger for power could and would not be sated.

He was within the airspace of the creature and was almost level with its eyes when the beast took notice of the flying spec coming toward him in the air.

"Ahhh, a slayer. The ever thorn in my side. Your kind are an abhorrence to existence. An affliction that we will soon be cured of." Conquest spoke.

The three heads leaned towards the incoming Axel and released a blast of fiery energy.

Axel stared forwards as it zoomed towards him. The barrier exploded against the superior level of energy and exploded outwards in the air.

"Hm?" Conquest spoke as he looked closer.

Axel fell through the smoke and landed on a nearby building - rolling into the landing with his body and then coming to his feet. He had no time to think however as a large shadow suddenly loomed over him.

"You really put your foot in this one I see." Axel badly joked as he saw the incoming foot.

"You allowed Malakah to die in shame by defeating him. I have no time to suffer your quips."

Axel clutched his sword tight and planted his feet firmly.

"Swinging for the fences here with only one out left in the inning! Go, Purgatory, Despair of the Fallen!!" Axel swung his blade with all his might towards the foot - just like against Malakah, the blade stretched in size during his swing but this time it also increased in width as well.

A blade that can only be described as the size of a two story condo struck hard against the bottom of Conquest's large foot.

"What in the name of the Gods is that abhorrent weapon?!"

It created a deep gash in the process which caused blood to rain down below and drenched Axel in the process.

"WHAT?!!!" Conquest yelled out as he was slightly knocked off balance. More so by the fact that he was just caught off guard by this lowly slayer.

The greatly oversize blade fell against the ground as Axel finished his swing. The ground cracked and gave way under its immense weight. Axel held the handle with deadly grip strength which had still remained the same size - only the blade itself grew. His muscles were quivering under the incredible feat he just pulled off.

"Huff...huff..." Axel was breathing heavily as his hair was straightened out from the gush of blood that fell upon him. But his smile was as big as ever.

< Defenses breached. God level fight phase 2: Climb. >
