At a rainy day mid of June , in a world where everyone was beautiful, a child was born. Her birth terrified everyone and shook them to their bones.
A tired mother couldn't bear to look at her child. " My daughter is not as beautiful as we expected. What went wrong ???" A hysterical mother whined at her husband throughout her shock, sad and terrified. "If the others see her, they might accuse you of giving birth to a demon. We need to dispose her dear , it can't be helped" The mother looked at her husband with suprise and confusion. "Do we really need to do that? Is there no other way for this pitiful girl to live?" She stammered, trying to find a way out of this situation. "This world doesn't need the ugly. They would only burden us. I love my newborn whole heartedly but it would be heartless of me to let her live in this world where beauty defines everything in a person's live when she is so ...plain. To us She is the most beautiful but to the world.... you know how it is, they expel them.. " The mother couldn't accept it."5 years let her live with us in secret. Only 5 years. After that , we will send her away but atleast let her see the world and it's glory for 5 years." She pleaded at her husband who was helpless at her pleas. "Dear, I can't-"
She looked so sad the instant he said those words, he knew he was breaking her heart. The world was cruel and harsh. The beautiful would not want her. She would suffer everyday! He wanted to explain but looking at her state made him take it all back and make a selfish decision. "5 years. Not more nor less . Only. 5 years." And that was how June was born in the most chaotic manner of life and death at birth itself.
June was a plain kid with no gold ringlets like the other kids but a mixture of yellow and brown. As an excuse her parents said that she was birthed at a place with abundance of dark pigment therefore it got stuck to her hair. The neighbours looked with pity at the weak toddler. She was not like the other kids who looked like angelic cherubs but rather looked neutral . The other children shot questions at her. "What happened to your hair? It's not like ours. My momma says my hair looks like spun gold" "Why is your eyes like pebbles? Ours are light or so they say." June knew she was an outcast before this questions even began. Other children with golden heads and sky blue eyes smiled for the class photo while her murky straw coloured hair stood out. When they went to the museums and chapels all the angels were enveloped with bright colours and a dazzling halo but only one other angel was wrapped in darkness like her. The fallen ones. Her mother always gave her kisses and would stare at her long and hard only to cry after a while sobbing when June asked her if she was as different as the others treated her like. Her childhood plays were always filled with gloom. She would always get the role of the witch while the mean Zoe always got the role of the damsels in distress and princess. June couldn't help but wish sometimes, " I wish I was normal".
The teachers made it clear, students stared , boys jeered at her with evil grins and said, "You are abnormal and everybody agrees." She would just ignore it and act okay eventhough she felt agonized with each passing second in their presence.
Middle School passed and she topped the school as she took comfort in studying with no other friends to hang out with. As the outcast she would go to school and pay intense attention to class, only stopping at breaks to go to the library and continue her work. At lunch, she would stay at the far corner of the class and eat lifelessly while others secretly peeked at her. She wanted nothing and expected others to not associate with her. After such a long period of seclusion from childhood itself she felt immune to loneliness. Once she had seen a girl cry after school all alone by herself. June didn't bother to ask why as it may cause drama but as she got her bag, the girl asked her "Do you happen to know what ...ugly means?". Silent June stared at her as if she would eat her alive. "Do you have nothing to do but cry and mock others?" She violently asked her. The girls eyes widened when she realized that she had offended June. "No- You see I didn't mean it to anyone! It's just that my friends told me I'm not the most prettiest girl and won't succeed in life so they told me to not be friends with them as.. I'm not preety and I asked if that was even a thing and they said, Yea it's called being...ugly." The girl looked like any more and she would cry the very instant. June felt baffled, her so called friends had the audacity to call Aphrodite the prettiest girl in the class, "ugly" and even left her. What was more annoying was that Aphrodite didn't even know that she was the prettiest girl in the whole damn neighbourhood !
" Are you stupid?" Frustated at her, June asked insensitively. "Why would you say that ?" "Because you are beautiful and beauty defines your worth stupid"
