Chapter 5 - Unsettling News

Inside the solitude of the carriage, Soft lamplight illuminated the interior, casting gentle shadows across the velvet seats. The smell of leather and polished wood mingled with a faint hint of hay from the horses' harness. The rhythmic clip-clop of hooves on cobblestone provided a soothing backdrop.

My frustration bubbled to the surface, mingling with a sense of disbelief at my own actions.

"How could I have fallen so easily for the prince's charm?" I scolded myself inwardly, berating the weakness that had momentarily overcome me.

"Emily, you're being utterly ridiculous. Falling for the charm of that arrogant prince would have been a grave mistake. You should know better."

Yet, as I continued to chastise myself, an unwanted comparison slipped into my thoughts, drawing an involuntary sigh from my lips. I found myself mentally comparing my own appearance with that of the guest princess who had danced with the Prince Sebastian.

The princess—her beauty was ethereal, the epitome of elegance and grace. Her radiant smile could light up an entire room, and her eyes sparkled with an enchanting allure. Her gown, a masterpiece of opulence and sophistication, seemed to float around her like a cloud of silk and satin, accentuating every curve and contour.

In contrast, I couldn't help but feel a pang of self-consciousness. My own appearance, while far from plain, paled in comparison to the guest princess's resplendence. And as for my features, they were merely average I believe, lacking the arresting beauty that commanded attention.

A sigh escaped my lips as I whispered to the empty carriage, "What a foolish notion it was to compare myself to her. I am not one to be swayed by superficial appearances."

As the carriage rumbled along, I resolved to cast aside my misplaced feelings, reminding myself that the prince's fleeting interest meant nothing. I would not allow myself to be consumed by superficial longings or false hopes.

With that thought, I straightened my pose, fixing my gaze on the passing scenery outside the carriage window.

As the carriage came to a halt in front of our grand mansion, I couldn't help but notice a peculiar sight. The usually bustling courtyard was eerily quiet, and I saw our servants gathered together, their expressions etched with worry and distress. A knot of unease formed in the pit of my stomach.

"We've arrived, miss." I heard the coachman say, catching my attention.

"Thank you, kind sir. I appreciate your assistance tonight."

"Anytime, Miss"

I nodded gratefully, stepping out of the carriage and onto the familiar cobblestone path leading to the mansion's entrance. As I approached the grand doors, I sense unease settling within me.

Something felt wrong.

"Good evening, Mrs. Ashcroft," I greeted our head maidservant with forced calmness, though my voice betrayed the unease that gripped me. "What is happening? Why does everyone seem so troubled?"

Mrs. Ashcroft, an older maid who had served our family faithfully for years, looked at me with concern. Her lined face held the weight of unspoken worries, and her eyes held a glimmer of tears.

"Lady Emily, I'm afraid your mother has left the mansion," she said softly.

The words hung in the air, and a surge of panic coursed through my veins. My mother, the epitome of elegance and poise, had always been a constant presence in our lives. To hear that she had left without any explanation sent waves of worry crashing over me. What could have prompted her sudden departure?

It is not her scheduled departure to Eldermont yet.

My heart raced as I pressed Mrs. Ashcroft for answers, desperation lacing my voice.

"But why? What happened? Did she leave any message? Maybe she had gone to Eldermomf?"

The old maid servant's eyes glistened with unshed tears as she shook her head.

"I'm afraid I do not have all the details, Lady Emily. There was a call came for your mother from your twin brother, and shortly after, she departed without a word. None of us know the reason behind her sudden departure."

A surge of nervous energy coursed through me, threatening to overwhelm my senses.

Questions spun in my mind, and uncertainty gnawed at my soul. I scanned the faces of the servants around me, searching for answers, but they were all as clueless as I was. A sense of helplessness washed over me.

Taking a deep breath, I resolved to remain composed, "Thank you, Mrs. Ashcroft," I said, my voice steady, albeit strained. "Please inform me immediately if any further information becomes available. I shall retire from my studies to gather my thoughts."

With each step toward the grand entrance of our mansion, a myriad of emotions swirled within me. Fear and worry that surrounded my mother's sudden departure consumed my thoughts.

As I entered the familiar confines of my bedroom, I closed the door behind me, shutting out the world, and offering a sanctuary where I could gather my scattered thoughts.

Soft pastel hues adorn the walls of my room, casting a gentle ambiance. Delicate lace curtains frame the large, intricately carved windows, allowing sunlight to filter in and bathe the room in a warm glow. The luxurious four-poster bed takes center stage, draped in elegant silken sheets and adorned with plush cushions. A cozy sitting area with plush armchairs and a quaint writing desk. A curated collection of antique maps and travel memorabilia decorates the walls.

I sank into a plush armchair, my mind racing with unanswered questions. What could have driven my mother away at this time? And what role did my twin brother play in all of this? It's been weeks since he contacted us.

The weight of the unanswered questions bore heavily upon me.

With the final decision, I opened my closet. As I swung open the closet doors, an array of elegant dresses, exquisitely tailored suits, and delicate blouses greeted her in a colorful ensemble. The lines of clothes showcased a mix of timeless classics and daring fashions From flowing gowns fit for a ball to practical riding attire.
