Mrs. Whitman was Mrs. Mamet's younger sister, and Yvette Flack was Mrs. Whitman's husband's niece. Yvette grew up with Caleb Mamet, as childhood friends. Both families dreamed of their children growing up and getting married together, deepening their familial ties.
Mrs. Whitman had no children of her own, so she treated Yvette like her own daughter and spoiled her. Consequently, Mrs. Mamet also loved and cared for Yvette. Now, seeing Yvette forcing herself to comfort them, their hearts ached like they were being stabbed with knives.
