Now a hypnotist herself, Xaviera knew it was difficult to use hypnotism to modify someone's memory. Even with her talent, she couldn't achieve this level of skill.
Moreover, both she and Caleb had strong wills; to hypnotize them, it would have to be done when they were completely off guard. Otherwise, they would quickly notice and strongly resist, making the hypnotism fail.
Could the person who hypnotized them have been someone they were very familiar with so they didn't put up their guard?
