Chapter 57 - TTW Chapter 57: Cochlea (1)

"That's up to you," Lin Yi replied.

Lin Yi noticed that Yukinori Shinohara didn't outright refuse, indicating his agreement.

"Both sisters should be treated equally. They both need Quinques of the same level," Lin Yi reminded, expressing his preference for two S-level Quinques rather than lower-ranked ones.

"I understand. I will have someone bring them over," Shinohara replied, slightly annoyed.

Those two Quinques were items he had acquired when he was younger, but as his strength and speed increased, they were no longer suitable for him.

Originally, he had planned to give them to a potential and suitable investigator.

Shinohara wasn't selfish. Even if he had some rapport with other special rank investigators, they probably wouldn't easily agree.

Lin Yi may have underestimated the weight of his words. By casually mentioning that he had personally brought these two sisters, Shinohara recognized their potential and deemed them worthy of the two S-level Quinques.

"Bring another plate of sushi. Consider it a reward for helping me with my work during this time," Lin Yi said, smiling.

Shinohara shook his head in disbelief. He couldn't believe this guy would exchange two S-level Quinques for just one plate of sushi.

As they were halfway through their meal, Lin Yi's hand holding the chopsticks almost dropped to the floor as he looked astonished towards the cafeteria entrance.

Akira Mado held Kurona with her left hand and Nashiro with her right hand as they walked in. Observing their intimate appearance, Lin Yi realized that the two sisters had already won over Akira.

However, Akira didn't walk towards them. Instead, she took the two sisters and sat down on the other side to eat.

"Oh, it seems like she can smile after all. She's usually so cold, like her father, Kureo Mado," Shinohara commented.

"Yes, I don't think I've ever seen her smile either." Lin Yi was pleased to see Akira getting along peacefully with the two sisters, so he didn't intervene.

If they had a good relationship with each other, their future interactions would be much easier.

"I've been away for a couple of days. Did anything major happen?" Lin Yi asked when he found a moment.

"The investigation in the 20th ward is progressing smoothly. Based on Akira's previous analysis, we've been cautious not to alert the suspect and have avoided any major confrontations," Shinohara replied. "However, there was an incident in the neighboring 23rd ward involving a familiar face you will recognize, the Eyepatch Ghoul."

"He hijacked the transport vehicle carrying an S-level Ghoul named Naki, who was supposed to be escorted to Cochlea. This Eyepatch Ghoul is becoming more audacious."

Upon hearing this, Lin Yi was startled. Has the story progressed to this point? It seems that the plot of the Raid on Cochlea by Aogiri Tree is also approaching.

For him, this was a perfect opportunity.

Cochlea, also known as the Ghoul Detention Center, houses Ghouls ranging from C to SS rank. But it is completely confidential to the outside world. Regular investigators don't have legitimate reasons to request reports or even visit.

The Bureau even dispatched a Special Rank investigator, Kyouji Misaka, who has been stationed at Cochlea for years.

Low-ranked Ghouls are not specially disciplined at Cochlea, while high-ranking and powerful Ghouls are subjected to months or even longer periods of starvation to weaken their powers, making them easier to manage and prevent escapes.

Strong yet vulnerable, this was like a paradise for Lin Yi, who possessed Jörmungandr.

However, he couldn't intervene without a good reason. Ghouls are valuable to the CCG not only as Quinques; they are also subjects for human experimentation and scientific research.

Some Ghouls with strong regenerative abilities are even treated as piglets, continuously fed to restore their Kagune, which is then harvested repeatedly as an endless supply of Quinque materials.

Therefore, Lin Yi couldn't find an opportunity to intervene. Besides, as a Special Rank investigator, his every move was closely monitored.

"What's wrong?" Shinohara asked when he saw Lin Yi lost in thought.

"Nothing, I was just thinking that this Eyepatch Ghoul is not only audacious but also incredibly lucky. I never encountered him during my investigations in the 9th ward," Lin Yi replied absentmindedly.

Shinohara didn't think much of it either and simply continued the conversation, chatting back and forth.

In the following days, Lin Yi occupied the main seat at his desk, delegating all the work to his subordinates.

Since he was well aware of the situation in the 20th ward, he didn't expect any major problems to arise.

Inside his office, Lin Yi leaned back in his chair, half-closing his eyes. A large floor-to-ceiling window provided a panoramic view of the 20th ward.

Nashiro stood behind him, her delicate hands gently massaging his temples. Kurona, on the other hand, helped Lin Yi with paperwork, a task she had become quite skilled at.

"Bang!"

The door abruptly burst open, and Ashikagawa rushed in, appearing somewhat flustered.

"Investigator Lin Yi!"

Lin Yi was startled and instinctively sat up, almost breaking into a cold sweat. Seeing Ashikagawa's appearance, he pondered whether he should install a lock. If it had been Akira who barged in, it would surely have caused another disturbance.

"What's the matter?"

"Investigator, Cochlea has been attacked by Aogiri Tree. Headquarters has issued an urgent mobilization order for you to provide support. Senior Shinohara, who is also a Special Rank investigator, has already gone ahead," Ashikagawa hurriedly informed him. If it weren't an emergency, he wouldn't dare to disturb his superior and the two others.

Finally, the time had come.

With a sense of urgency, Lin Yi quickly snapped out of his daze and stood up, swiftly adjusting his clothes.

"Nashiro, Kurona, take care of the 20th ward. Ashikagawa, inform Akira to accompany me," Lin Yi commanded decisively, making all the necessary arrangements.

High-ranking Ghouls in Cochlea were considered rare resources. They couldn't be killed by investigators without proper authorization, except in dangerous situations.
