Chapter 4 - Quinque

Lin Yi had spent two weeks in the hospital recovering from his injuries. Even though the doctor said he was fine, he didn't have any immediate plans to leave. But then Yukinori Shinohara returned and insisted on taking him out of the hospital.

"Okay, okay, stop pulling. They say it takes a long time for bones and tendons to heal completely. I'm still a patient," Lin Yi reluctantly said as he got into the car and yawned.

Shinohara realized that Lin Yi was more stubborn than he expected. Instead of arguing, he instructed the driver to start the car. Lin Yi looked out of the window and saw the view of Japan for the first time since he arrived.

He couldn't imagine what kind of dangers were hidden in those tall buildings.

Leaning against the car window, Lin Yi let the wind ruffle his hair and lit a cigarette. Shinohara frowned, wanting to stop him, but he sensed that Lin Yi had something on his mind, so he stayed quiet.

"Why does it look so empty outside?" Lin Yi suddenly asked.

"Well, it's because this is the first ward," sighed Shinohara. Seeing Lin Yi's confusion, he explained, "Don't you know? No wonder you dared to go there alone in the middle of the night."

The first ward in Japan was a dangerous area where many ghouls gathered and fought for food. The ghouls there were usually fierce and had killed numerous people. It was so dangerous that the occupancy rate was less than 20 percent, and people preferred to live in other wards if they could afford it.

"No wonder," nodded Lin Yi, cursing the unreliable system in his mind. Luckily, the ghoul he encountered that night was only a Class A ghoul. If he had encountered an S-class one, he would have been in real trouble.

As they approached their destination, Lin Yi finished smoking and noticed the car slowing down.

"We're here," said Shinohara.

Following Shinohara, Lin Yi saw a large building that covered a vast area and stood more than ten stories high.

It was the Commission of Counter Ghoul Headquarters!

"Let's go," Shinohara said.

Lin Yi nodded and followed Shinohara into the bustling CCG Headquarters. There were people everywhere, busy with their tasks.

"Special Investigator Yukinori!"

"Special Investigator Yukinori!"

...

Yukinori Shinohara led the way, with people constantly stopping and bowing to him. The investigators had different ranks, from trainee to special-class. As a special-class investigator, Shinohara was one of the most powerful individuals in the world.

"I'll take you to a place first," Shinohara suddenly said, leaving Lin Yi puzzled but obediently following.

Finally, they arrived at a research room where scientists in white coats were conducting various experiments. It was overwhelming for Lin Yi to see all the hustle and bustle.

"This is Professor A, one of the heads of the Ghoul Weapon Research Institute," introduced Shinohara.

Lin Yi greeted him with a nod.

"Special-class Shinohara, is this the Quinque you requested for this young man?" chuckled Professor A, taking out a white suitcase from behind him. He continued, "The material you brought this time is quite special. If it weren't for your insistence, I would have wanted to study it longer."

"Well... it's not really mine. This material was obtained by this young man with his own 'literal' hands," Yukinori Shinohara teased, patting Lin Yi on the back.

Professor A narrowed his eyes, giving Lin Yi a surprised look. "If that's the case, it won't be a waste of my work."

With that, Professor A handed the suitcase directly to Lin Yi.

"So, this is a Quinque?" Lin Yi asked curiously, like a child.

A Quinque was a weapon made from the Rc cells of ghouls, obtained by killing or extracting the Kakuhou of ghouls. It was used to counter the RC cells of ghouls.

In the CCG, only investigators ranked second-class or above were allowed to use Quinques. Third-class investigators and assistants had to use low-power mass-produced guns against ghouls.

And now, Lin Yi unexpectedly had a Quinque, thanks to Yukinori Shinohara's efforts to convince the higher-ups.

The white suitcase had a special button on the handle. Lin Yi pressed it gently, and the suitcase opened, revealing blackish-red RC bullets that spun in the air. In an instant, they transformed into a long sword in Lin Yi's hand.

The blade was dark, clearly made using RC cells, while the hilt and handle were made of strong special steel.

The blade was approximately one meter long, resembling a Tang sword but with notable differences.

Lin Yi swung the sword with one hand, feeling surprisingly comfortable.

"This Quinque is more than meets the eye," Professor A chuckled.

Shinohara paused for a moment and asked with interest, "What else, Professor? Show us quickly."

Professor A smiled and, to Lin Yi's astonishment, took out a tube with red reagent from the nearby laboratory.

"I have made countless Quinques, but it's the first time I've seen such vital RC cells in a deceased host. It gives me the feeling of a snake; even if it's crushed, the body can still move for a while," Professor A explained. He then opened the test tube and let a few drops of blood drip onto the blade.

In the next moment, something strange happened.

The Quinque in Lin Yi's hand seemed to come alive. The blade trembled, and to his astonishment, tentacle-like strands of RC cells emerged from the blade and swayed wildly.

"This..." Shinohara was also taken aback, briefly suspecting that he was facing a living ghoul.

The blood on the blade was quickly absorbed, and in just a few breaths, the frenzied RC cells calmed down, retracting back into the blade as if nothing had happened.
