--- 3rd Person POV ---
--- 8th of September 1904 ---
"Your Imperial Highness," Minister Nair called respectfully, "heeding to your instruction a few weeks ago, the evaluation of all institution in the empire were still undergoing. With almost 2 thousand schools scattered throughout the empire, both private and public, it would take a total of 2-3 months before the thorough report will be arrived at your hands."
Minister Aryan Nair, the current Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, a staunched member of the conservative party and a monarchist, respectfully staring at Yuvraj Siagu Alexie, the current regent of the empire after his father, Maharaja Siagu XV retreated for recuperation. And today, as part of his duty as the education, sports and culture minister, he is tasked to accompany Yuvraj Siagu into inspecting the heart of education in the entire nation, the Riverbanks Imperial Institution.
It was not rare for Minister Nair to meet Yuvraj Siagu as it is his 10th time meeting the Yuvraj since assuming the office of minister. And with this, he was tasked by Yuvraj Siagu to conduct a thorough assessment on the teaching of each institution. Which puzzles Minister Nair to say the least as education have always been top notch in the entire empire.
But as a servant of the government, Minister Nair follows Yuvraj Siagu's command. And basing on the initial report he has gathered, few schools, surrounding the capital have performed quite well on their duty in imparting knowledge towards the students while others have also been performing a bit low.
But what really caught the attention of Minister Nair is the questionable funds made and requested by some schools towards the ministry regarding constructing new facilities or hiring new teachers, but it never came into being.
Which is a huge concern for Minister Nair as this will tarnish the integrity of the ministry and be painted with corruption. The same situation occurred with the social welfare. Minister Nair would not like that to happen while being in office as that will also signal the end of his political career.
Thus, along with the assessment asked by Yuvraj Siagu, Minister Nair also conducted a separate investigation on the things that the schools throughout the empire have done and their respective activities.
As much as Minister Nair would want to inform Yuvraj Siagu on this matter regarding the happening with some schools in the empire. His pride as a politician and fear of being removed in his office got him first over being a loyal servant and tell everything. Thus, Minister Nair decided to reason the logistics for the delay of the report but have also promised to himself that the moment everything been sorted out and the information being verified, Minister Nair would report everything to Yuvraj Siagu without leaving some crumbs.
"2-3 months," Yuvraj Siagu pondered while staring at the papers on his hand, "the time is too long and by that time, my father maharaja might resume the office."
Yuvraj Siagu is aware that he could not completely assume the control of being the monarch of the empire as his father is still breathing. He knew for a fact that the moment his father fully recovers, he will once again be subjected to just be the Yuvraj. Which will completely hinder Yuvraj Siagu into completing his goal to achieve while in office.
And one of his goal whiles being the regent is the reformation and overhaul of the ministry of education, sports and culture. Yuvraj Siagu is aware of the corruption happening within the ministry with the schools under it requesting additional funds for building construction that never really came into being. Upon gaining the position of regent under the order of his father, Yuvraj Siagu decided to get a thorough report on each ministry of the government.
And basing on the reports he has received, Yuvraj Siagu were shocked and appalled by the corruption happening within the lower ranks of each department under each ministry. From the ministry of interior, public works, and the newly established environment and natural resources. But none have surpassed the corruption happening within the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture.
The amount of money Yuvraj Siagu have seen being embezzled by those schools' administrators involved were almost tantamount to the budget of the ministry for the whole year. It might be small if taken by batch, but Yuvraj Siagu will not tolerate such small act to be pass and be look over with. An action must be taken to tackle this as soon as possible.
"Minister Nair," Yuvraj Siagu said, his voice steady but with an edge of determination, "I understand the scale of the task, but the urgency cannot be overstated. Education is the backbone of our future. I need preliminary findings as soon as possible, even if they are incomplete."
Minister Nair nodded; his face serious. "Yes, Your Imperial Highness. I will expedite the process and ensure you receive the most critical information at the earliest."
Chancellor Jain, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke up. "Your Imperial Highness, the Riverbank Imperial Institution stands ready to assist in any way necessary. Our resources and personnel are at your disposal for this investigation."
Chancellor Aarush Jain is somewhat aware of the happenings within the lower echelon of the schools in the entire empire. As the chancellor of the Riverbanks Imperial Institution and the current president of the Butuan Imperial Education Consortium (BIEC), the body that oversees and maintain of each higher education institution of the empire. Chancellor Jain have heard and tackled this with his colleagues during the recent gathering of chancellors.
The corruption within the education sector of the empire must be resolve in haste or it might endanger the education sector of the nation. The very sector that contributed excellent individuals throughout the history of the empire. And Chancellor Jain, a man who believes in the importance of quality education and the importance of it towards the advancement of the Butuanon society could not tolerate this corruption within.
Thus, giving the support that Yuvraj Siagu needed in further conducting his investigation is vital and with great importance.
Yuvraj Siagu gave a nod of appreciation. "Thank you, Chancellor Jain. Your cooperation will be crucial in this endeavour."
Yuvraj Siagu's attention then returns to the paper that he is holding, reading the reports regarding the current development within the Riverbanks Imperial Institution. And what caught his attention is the current budget allocated to the further development of the science and astronomy department of the institution. This pique the interest of Yuvraj Siagu himself as to why the budget for the astronomy department is almost as comparable towards the science department.
There has indeed been an increase of interest towards the topic of astronomy in the education circle of the empire. The talk on what lies beyond the stars have been a central topic for the past years. And this made Yuvraj Siagu be a bit excited as this only preludes the topic of space exploration and discovery. A huge leap on human achievements for centuries to come.
The topic of astronomy might be a bit early as technological advancement to bring man to space is still hard to create. And Yuvraj Siagu is fully aware that even with his knowledge on future technology, the topic regarding spaceships is unknown to him. But this does not mean that the topic of astronomy cannot be further explore without sending man to space.
The mere thought of developing a space weapon that can annihilate an entire civilization that only appears on sci-fi movies makes him excited as with the early development that he is making, the possibility of developing it is now much greater. But still, those were things that Yuvraj Siagu can only dream of as of the moment.
Even the idea of hologram communication might be near to completion but he knew for a fact that it won't make a real completion for the next few more years. As his vague knowledge about holograms fusing with communicating is not enough to hasten its completion.
"Chancellor Jain," Yuvraj Siagu calmly called, not lifting his gaze from the papers. The chancellor, who had been consistently focusing on Yuvraj Siagu's actions, immediately stepped closer, his demeanor attentive and respectful.
"Yes, Your Imperial Highness?" Chancellor Jain responded; his voice steady but curious about what Yuvraj Siagu had to say.
"I have noticed the significant budget allocated to the astronomy department," Yuvraj Siagu began, his tone thoughtful. "While I understand the growing interest in these fields, I am curious about the justification for this level of funding. Could you shed some light on the reasons behind it?"
Chancellor Jain nodded, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Indeed, Your Imperial Highness. The increased funding for the astronomy department is driven by several factors. Firstly, there has been a surge in academic interest and research proposals related to these fields. Our scholars are eager to explore the mysteries of the universe, and their work has already shown promising results."
He paused, allowing his words to sink in before continuing. "Secondly, the Riverbank Imperial Institution aims to position itself as a leader in these emerging sciences. We believe that investing in science and astronomy will not only enhance our academic reputation but also inspire future generations to pursue careers in these disciplines."
Yuvraj Siagu listened intently, his mind processing the information. "I see. While the enthusiasm for these fields is commendable, it is crucial to ensure that our investments yield tangible benefits for the empire. Have there been any notable achievements or breakthroughs that justify this increased budget?"
Chancellor Jain's expression grew more serious. "Your Imperial Highness, there have indeed been some remarkable developments. For instance, our astronomers have recently discovered a new comet, which has garnered international attention. Additionally, our astronomers have been working on refining techniques for predicting celestial events, which could have practical applications in agriculture and navigation.
And by this, we have already been in communication with the government in boosting the harvest that our farmers can have."
Yuvraj Siagu nodded thoughtfully. "Very well, Chancellor Jain. It seems that the investments are bearing fruit. However, I must emphasize the importance of maintaining a balance. While we pursue these ambitious goals, we must not neglect other vital areas of education and research."
"Of course, Your Imperial Highness," Chancellor Jain agreed. "I assure you that we are committed to a holistic approach to education. We will continue to support all disciplines, ensuring that the empire's academic institutions remain well-rounded and capable of addressing a wide range of challenges."
Satisfied with the chancellor's response, Yuvraj Siagu offered a small smile. "Thank you, Chancellor Jain."
A few minutes of silence envelops the room while Yuvraj Siagu continues to scan the entirety of the papers on his hands. He is in no rush to finishes everything when it is still 1 in the afternoon and the last stops of his visit is just adjacent to the education buildings of the campus. Chancellor Jain and Minister Nair on the other hand both relaxes after answering the questions made Yuvraj Siagu regarding some vital parts of the reports.
Although the two have already seen the Yuvraj in few cases of visiting the imperial complex or in attending banquets host by the nobles and the imperial family. The two could not deny that they always felt in awe and respect towards the man in front of them. Not because he is the next in line to the throne but because of his commitment towards the betterment of the nation.
Finishes with reading the content of the papers, Yuvraj Siagu decided to take his stand to signal the end of his visit as it already been 2 hours already. And he still needed to visit the laboratory of his previous teacher to receive some updates.
Seeing Yuvraj Siagu standing up, Chancellor Jain and Minister Nair also take their stand to avoid show disrespect towards the Yuvraj. Senior Eunuch Radhesh on the other hand came closer to his master, Yuvraj Siagu, to assist him on his action.
With a smile on his face, Yuvraj Siagu faces Chancellor Jain and Minister Nair, "Gentlemen, I am pleased with our short meeting this day but I have to bid my farewell as I have other matters to attend to before the day ended."
"Your Imperial Highness, your visit has already been enough to show your support for the educational sector of the empire." Minister Nair with a smile.
"Indeed, Your Imperial Highness." Chancellor Jain seconded with a wide smile, wanting to please Yuvraj Siagu, "Your visit is of much importance to us here in the Riverbanks Imperial Institution. Your presence alone boosted not just the eagerness of our students but have also encourages our teachers to achieve a better result on their students' education."
Smile is what Yuvraj Siagu replied towards the two, but before fully leaving the room, Yuvraj Siagu reminded Minister Nair to arrange necessary things to tackle his proposal on recognizing woman and allow them to receive the same quality education as men in each educational institution in the empire. With a serious tone, no hesitancy nor wanting to back down on his voice could Minister Nair could hear nor feel.
It has only been weeks since he was informed by Yuvraj Siagu regarding this aspect of his reformation to be made the educational sector of the empire. Minister Nair furiously and firmly against this idea of having woman received the same educational rights as man.
But his disapproval was met with a hard slap when Yuvraj Siagu informed him on the achievements made by Madame Curie on the field of science. Although still quite hesitant and afraid of being mocked by others on allowing woman to receive the same educational benefits as man does.
Minister Nair could not even deny the command of Yuvraj Siagu as the proposal presented merits that would not just benefit the nation but also the society as a whole in the long run. Thus, despite his hesitation and prejudice against this.
Chancellor Jain, first time hearing this, shows a shock expression and a bit of disapproval due to his belief of woman should only be allowed only to reach secondary and have no place in the world of intellect. As chancellor of the Riverbanks Imperial Institution, he is one of those who opposes the membership of Madame Curie on the Sangha of Erudition due to her being a woman.
His belief stems from his idea of woman being inferior from man and it is evident to him not allowing his own wife to work outside their house. Even facing the woman nurses on hospitals, Chancellor Jain always felt revolted on seeing woman on this field. There was even a time where he scrutinizes one woman nurse for working outside their house. His scrutiny and criticism were so severe that it causes the woman to cry and leave the hospital early.
And due to his position of being the current chancellor of the Riverbanks Imperial Institution and one of the most influential members of the Sangha of Erudition, the news of this never really come to light. Chancellor Jain also almost prevented Madame Curie from entering the Sangha of Erudition because of this same mindset, but was overshadowed by Doctor Rizal's bid of approval and the support Madame Curie have from other members.
But before Chancellor Jain could even protest his disapproval of allowing woman to experience the same educational treatment as men, an intimidating and scrutinizing glare is what he receives from Yuvraj Siagu himself who knows the deep prejudice Chancellor Jain have towards women. This causes Chancellor Jain to back down a bit afraid of further offending the Yuvraj.
"Chancellor," Yuvraj Siagu intimidatingly called while halting his walk outside the room, "I know what you are thinking and planning on appealing. But keep that foul thought of yours on yourself."
"But, Your Imperial Highness…" Chancellor Jain blurted, trying to defend his stance but was once again interrupted by Yuvraj Siagu with just a raise on his hand, still not turning his gaze towards Chancellor Jain.
"I told you to keep that on yourself," Yuvraj Siagu seriously stated, "I heard what you did towards my teacher during her and her husband's debut at the gathering of Sangha of Erudition."
Cold sweats started to form on the back of Chancellor Jain while his heart started to pound uncontrollably. He never thought that Yuvraj Siagu would care so much towards how his previous teacher were being treated. This made Chancellor Jain felt a bit remorseful on his previous actions. Along with this, he also grows some resentment towards Madame Curie for making him look bad in the sight of the Yuvraj.
"Your action has not just infuriated my teacher but you have also made fun of the intellectuals of this mighty empire, just because of your petty prejudice and thinking of men being above woman." Yuvraj Siagu continued with deep scrutiny and mockery, "Have you not felt ashamed of yourself for harbouring such thinking? Your daughter and wife must be ashamed for having you in their lives. Even your mother will surely feel disappointed with that thought of your, if she's still alive today."
Chancellor Jain felt the weight of Yuvraj Siagu's words like a hammer striking an anvil. The Yuvraj's voice was laced with disdain, his words cutting through the air with precision. Chancellor Jain, who had long prided himself on his rigid beliefs and authority, now found himself cornered and exposed. His face flushed with a mix of anger and humiliation, but the fear of further provoking the Yuvraj kept him silent.
The Yuvraj's mention of his family—his daughter, his wife, his late mother—struck a nerve deep within him. Chancellor Jain's mind raced, the image of his wife, a woman of quiet strength who had always endured his beliefs in silence, now appearing in a different light. What would she think if she heard these words? Would she feel the same disappointment that Yuvraj Siagu claimed?
Yuvraj Siagu, sensing the Chancellor's turmoil, stepped closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You have spent your life looking down on women, denying them the opportunities they deserve, all in the name of preserving your outdated ideals. But understand this, Chancellor: this empire is built on the strength of all its people, not just the men. Your prejudices are a poison, and they have no place in the future we are building."
Chancellor Jain's hands trembled slightly, his resolve wavering under the Yuvraj's unrelenting gaze. The room seemed to close in around him, the walls echoing with the unspoken condemnation of his past actions. He opened his mouth to speak, to defend himself, but no words came. He felt powerless, stripped of the authority he had always wielded so effortlessly.
Yuvraj Siagu took a step back, his expression softening just a fraction, though the intensity of his gaze remained. "Change, Chancellor, before it is too late. The world is moving forward, and if you do not move with it, you will be left behind, consumed by the very prejudice you cling to."
Without waiting for a response, Yuvraj Siagu turned and walked away, leaving Chancellor Jain standing alone in the corridor, his mind swirling with a maelstrom of emotions. Senior Eunuch Radhesh tailed behind Yuvraj Siagu with a smug on his face while looking down at Chancellor Jain. Minister Nair on the other hand decided to tail Yuvraj Siagu after tapping Chancellor Jain's back with an intent of conveying sympathy while also mocking him inwardly for his ideocracy.
The Yuvraj's words echoed in Chancellor Jain's head, challenging the very foundation of his beliefs. As the footsteps of the Yuvraj faded into the distance, Chancellor Jain let out a shaky breath, feeling the full weight of the confrontation. He realized, perhaps for the first time, that the world he had known was changing—whether he liked it or not. With this, Chancellor Jain decided to remain and not tail behind Yuvraj Siagu, afraid of further angering the Yuvraj.
On his way towards the laboratory of his previous teacher, Doctor Rizal, Yuvraj Siagu still a bit furious on Chancellor Jain decided to refrain from speaking with Senior Eunuch Radhesh and Minister Nair, whom both understand the Yuvraj intention. And with the aim of wanting to avoid interacting with students of the institution due to Yuvraj Siagu's current mood, Senior Eunuch Radhesh guided Yuvraj Siagu and Minister Nair to take a different route, less frequently used by students.
But unexpectedly, they have encounter someone whom Yuvraj Siagu thought would not be in his nation due to this person being in Switzerland, just like from his previous world. But due to his deep intervention in the currently timeline, the man whom he thought would be in Switzerland by this time is currently here in Butuan. And the man is currently standing outside the laboratory of Doctor Rizal, while wearing a western styled tuxedo.
The man in question is none other than Albert Einstein himself, the man whom have contributed greatly on the field of Physics and unintentionally advancing the scientific community into a much greater extent. This unintentionally made Yuvraj Siagu forgets about his displeasure for a moment and have focused more on the man few meters away from him.
Minister Nair, caught the individual whom Yuvraj Siagu is paying his attention on decided to start speaking and informing the Yuvraj about what he knew about the man.
"Your Imperial Highness," Minister Nair called while walking inches behind Yuvraj Siagu to avoid loudening his voice, "that man is Albert Einstein and is currently working with Madame Curie and Pierre Curie, along with the other students they have on their research here in the empire. As what I have heard and informed, he just arrived here in Sooraj few weeks ago after being invited by Madame Curie to join them on their research."
"Really?" Yuvraj Siagu playing dumb on not knowing the man while also genuinely shock on knowing that it was due to Madame Curie's invitation that Albert Einstein is in Sooraj.
