'Strange,' Lyra thought as she flew ahead, keeping the beasts at bay and guiding Axis through the forest.
'Rida would have known Axis is undergoing the Forest's Trial.'
'Even if she wasn't aware… it's unlike her to send a search party.'
'Did something happen?'
"What are you thinking about?" Axis asked, nudging Lyra as he jogged beside her. "Got any ideas to avoid getting yelled at?"
Lyra glanced at him, her glowing eyes betraying a flicker of amusement. "Krrr…" [I do.]
"Oh? You do? What is it?"
"Kree…" Lyra chirped mischievously, flying up to perch on a branch. [Fly off to a branch.]
Axis groaned. "Great. Just abandon me to the wolves, why don't you?"
Lyra let out a laugh-like trill, watching him catch his breath below. As soon as Axis recovered, she took off again, flying swiftly ahead to guide him through the dense forest.
The wind whipped past Axis's face as he sprinted, dodging roots and low-hanging branches. His heartbeat pounded in his ears, driven by a mix of adrenaline and the faint, lingering fear of what awaited him.
Finally, the forest began to thin, and the first rays of sunlight filtered through the trees. In the distance, the mansion came into view, its towering structure a beacon of safety—and impending scolding.
"Almost there," Axis muttered, forcing himself to push harder despite his exhaustion.
Lyra soared gracefully overhead, her feathers glowing faintly in the early light. Her playful chirps echoed in the otherwise quiet forest, teasing him as she effortlessly gilded forward.
The two were just about to break through the treeline when—
"Axis!"
Rida materialized out of thin air, her face etched with worry.
"Rida, sorr—" Axis began, but she cut him off mid-sentence.
"Axis, thank the heavens you're safe. I'll hear your explanation later. For now, come with me!"
"Wha—" Before Axis could protest, Rida grabbed his arm, and in an instant, they vanished from the forest path.
Dizzy…
'Note to self: Tell Rida to stop teleporting me without warning,' Axis thought, squeezing his eyes shut and trying to regain his balance.
As his vision cleared, he blinked, taking in his surroundings.
'Wait… this is Rida's office?'
His gaze shifted to Rida, who was speaking to someone else.
'Who's she talking to?'
Finally, his vision sharpened, and he froze.
The woman beside Rida had long gray hair that shimmered like silver, her sapphire eyes sharp and piercing. She radiated a presence that was both commanding and familiar.
Her Presence Screamed Dominance.
"...Luna?" Axis whispered, his voice barely audible.
Luna's sharp sapphire eyes softened, a flicker of surprise crossing her face at Axis's words. "I heard you don't remember anything," she said, her voice steady but tinged with an underlying warmth. "But surprisingly, you remember me."
Axis hesitated, his gaze flickering between her and Rida. "I… I don't know why. Your name just came to me. It feels… familiar."
Luna offered a small smile, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Maybe some things are too deeply rooted to forget," she said softly.
Rida cleared her throat, breaking the brief silence. "Luna, as much as I'm glad you two are reconnecting, this isn't the time for reminiscing. We need to focus on the matter at hand."
Luna's expression turned serious, and she stepped closer to Axis, resting a hand on his shoulder. Her presence was both comforting and commanding, her tone firm but not unkind. "Axis, I need you to listen carefully. What I'm about to tell you isn't easy to hear."
Axis felt a lump form in his throat as he nodded. "What is it?"
"The duchess—our mother—has gone missing," Luna said bluntly, her words hanging heavy in the air.
