The tests went on for a week.
Every trainee was tested in the aspects of Strength, Stamina and Speed. After that duels were organized. Unlike competitions, Klaus wanted to understand the strengths and weaknesses of every trainee.
Moreover, he wanted them to know their strengths and weaknesses. He also doesn't want to depend much on luck, which is very low for him. He wanted the best of them to be chosen.
In competitions normally duels are done using random draws. If two powerful contestants face each other in the initial stages, one of them would exit before anything starts.
By luck, even one of the weakest could reach finals. This would defeat his purpose and he tested everyone against everyone else.
The highest wins would obviously get the top ranks.
