"This was it. I'm finally free." Maine mumbled to herself as she stepped out of the taxi, onto her new college's property. Maine walked to the back of the taxi and retrieved the rest of her suitcases. She looked at the college once more to take in its beauty. It has luxurious green grass, stretching for what felt like miles. It was tall, and made of a gorgeous brown and red color mix. It was old, but well kept.
With a giant clock on the front of the building, and the state flag on both sides. The windows were slightly tinted, but you could still see inside them, and see all the different personalities of each teacher in their class room. The front lawn had a pathway, all gathering in the center to a breathtaking fountain, with flowers and moss, gorgeous clear water and a sound only god himself could create. As she walks into the building, she takes a deep breath of relief since she finally escaped that horrid place. The rooms are colorful and unique, each and every one a different personality. The hallways filled with smiles, and laughter, colored welcome flags and the aroma of freshly baked muffins, pancakes, bacon, and eggs filling the school. She finds her dorm, 2302, and picks a bed.
There are two beds, one on either half of the room. She picks the bed to her right, and unpacks. When she's finished, her half of the' room had exploded into gorgeous pastel rainbows. Just as she's about to grab her laptop and head down to the cafeteria, she hears a familiar voice behind her. Behind her she sees her childhood best friend Madison, running up behind her.
"MADISON!!!" Maine opens her arms as Madison embraces her, lifting her off the ground. "how have you been? It's been so long!"
"I've been great, my mom recently started a new clothing business, we went to Japan to celebrate. And Barney just got his haircut! How about you girly?"
"That's amazing, I've just been working on my studies, how's Connor by the way?"
"Ugh, he's going into dad's old woodworking business, to keep the family tradition or whatever."
"That's good of him."
"Yeah, yeah, but we should get down to the cafeteria before breakfast ends, c'mon!" The cafeteria is packed when they get there, it takes them 5 minutes to find a seat, and 10 minutes to get their food. As Madison grumbles along to get their food, Maine unlocks her phone to find over 50 texts from her friend Dean. She shoots off a quick reply and opens her laptop to see her schedule. Oh cool, I have art first she looks at the rest of her schedule and writes them down, just as Madison returns with their food. Before she knows it, the time is 4:50 and she's doing homework for her classes. Madison went to get them some coffee and poptarts to snack on.
Maine hears a small thump as the dorm room door closes behind her. "You won't believe who I just saw." Maine turns around with her eyebrow raised. "I just saw Mr. Wallens, our physics teacher from high-school!"
"Oh, cool!" Maine states sarcastically. Madison lays the tray of food down on Maine's desk, and plops down onto her bed. The next morning, Maine wakes up to Madison's loud alarm. "Ugh, I don't want to wake up yet.." Madison grumbles as she searches for her alarm clock. Maine gets up, and goes into the bathroom to have a quick shower and get ready. Once done, she walks out to Madison sitting up in her bed, and for the first time, she gets a really good look at her since last time she'd last seen her when they were 15.
As the sun glimmers through the blinds and onto Madison, Maine's heart skips a beat and butterflies appear in her stomach. Maine quickly breaks this gaze and walks over to the closet to get some clothes, and heads back to the bathroom. Catching one last glance at Madison before closing the door. What was that!? Maine angrily thinks to herself. A voice in her head tells her it's love, giving her memories of how amazing Madison is, but another voice tells her it's nothing. It's just a small crush. It'll go away soon. Maine sighs in relief.
There's no way she could feel that way about her childhood best friend. Later that day, Maine can't focus in class. It's her favorite class, but that moment this morning keeps her head busy. The way the sun hit her gorgeously messy oak brown hair, and how the sun glimmers on her clear and perfectly oval face, the way her silky night pink gown lays over her very demanding curves, the way her emerald green eyes shimmer in the morning sun's rays with a tint of sea blue. Her lips, so plump and pink, perfectly soft and shiny. Maine comes back to reality as the 4th period bell rings. Rushing to her next class, she puts in headphones and heads to the cafeteria for a snack.
As she hits play, she realizes that her favorite song, "Dandelions" by Ruth B. Starts playing. Madison pops into her head, she quickly pulls out her headphones and stops the song. Putting her stuff away, she grabs a snack, and goes to class. She opens the door to find Madison next to the only open seat in the class. The classroom has paintings and art pieces scattered around on the walls, and the teacher dresses in a formal, but colorful outfit. The walls a mix of pink and blue, with a tint of purple, and the floor with many colored rugs, some soft, some almost like a towel.
Her desk was painted as if to have paint splatters all over it, with a colorful set of roses and a clear vase. In the corner of the room is a plain, light wood door, Maine assumes that's the art supply closet. During the middle of class, Maine is done with her work, and decides to help Madison through hers. As they're working, Madison rests her head on Maine's shoulder, making Maine's heart flutter. She smiled to Madison nervously, and continued helping her. The bell for lunch rings in what feels like 5 minutes for Maine. Her and Madison walk down to the cafeteria, but along the way, a tall guy stops them.
He has forest green eyes, curly dark brown hair, he's tan, muscular, and has an almost obnoxiously large grin on his face. His teeth a perfect white, and his canines sharper than a vampires. He looks Maine up and down before finally saying "Hi, I'm Sean." His voice clear, slightly deep, and perfect.
"you must be Maine?" he asks almost certain he's right.
"I am, and may I ask how you know me?"
"Oh, I'm a friend of Madison." He states, his grin almost blinding. Maine looked at Madison, who has heart eyes, staring at Sean. Maine shakes Sean's hand, tells him that they're in a hurry, and waves him goodbye as she drags Madison along. After lunch, Maine and Madison are walking to their next class, Maine decides that science isn't that important. Taking Madison outside, to the benches. Before they know it, it's sunset, leaving the sky a beautiful rust orange, fading to a dusk pink, down to a deep purple. The clouds a mix of a rose pink and a fire red. Once they get back to the dorm, it starts to rain outside, and quickly turns into a thunderstorm.
Maine knows Madison has always had a fear of thunderstorms, so they snuggle up together and watch an animal documentary. Maine looks at her phone, and sees that it's already 12:00. When Maine looks at Madison, she had already fallen asleep on Maine. She smiles and turns off the TV, slowly moving to not wake Madison. gently lays her down, taking off her shoes, and tucks her into her blanket. Maine stares at Madison for a moment, then goes to get herself ready for bed. As she gets into bed, she hears a small whisper behind her.
She turns around, and Madison is gone. She gets up almost panicked and looks into the bathroom. She's thankful to find Madison just brushing her teeth, and gets back into bed. As she gets comfy, she feels something behind her. She turns over again, to see Madison climbing into bed with her. Oh yeah, thunderstorms Maine thinks to herself. Maine wakes up to a loud thump behind her.
She looks at the time on her phone to see it's 4 in the morning. She tries going back to sleep, but then hears it again, and again, and again. She puts the pillow over her head, but the thumping only gets louder and faster. She sits up and looks around. It takes a moment for her eyes to adjust, but she still can barely see anything. She removes her covers, and feels a terribly cold draft. She grabs her phone and turns on the flashlight.
The light shines onto the window, showing that it was left open. She hurriedly goes to close the window, as her dorm is on the 3rd story floor. She hears the thump more, this time more aggressive. She turns around to find Madison missing again. Her pace becomes faster, as her heart starts racing, and her head spinning. She remembers... She runs to the bathroom. Empty. She goes to the closet, still nothing.
She runs into the hallway, and the thump gets louder, and faint crying. She runs to the stairwell, and the noise grows louder. It seems to be coming from the floor below. She runs down the stairwell, and looks down the hall with her flashlight in hand. She sees Madison, curled into a ball at the end of the hallway. She starts toward her, but stops 10 feet short. the crying so loud it felt like Maine's ears would burst. Maine looks closely at Madison, but starts quietly and quickly backing away. Madison has a birthmark on the back of her right arm.
Maine thinks terrified. This girl doesn't have that… Maine starts backing up faster, but the girl turns around, and starts punching the wall. Maine turns around and bolts to the stairwell. When she reaches the stairs, she stops dead in her tracks. At the top of the stairs, stands Madison. Maine stands there, tears fill in both Maine's and Madison's eyes.
Madison slowly walks down the stairs, to Maine. Maine stares at her friend, clueless of what to say. Madison falls into Maine's arms, holding her tightly. "Im so glad I found you." Maine hears Madison whisper. Maine feels hands wrap around her wrists, pulling them behind her back. Madison gets pulled back away from Maine, cutting her side with her long nails, Maine winces, as Madison gets thrown against the wall.
Maine screams for her friend, but gets held back. She looks behind her to see the girl from the hallway. Maines face goes white as she sees that the girls face. Blood red eyes, that seems to be glowing, with psycho and certain death written all over. Her teeth when she smiled were filed and sharp. Maine turns back to Madison, who's now crying, but also looks absolutely terrified. Maine screams at the top of her lungs, crying. Her throat hurts, but she continues to scream, and struggle. Maine breaks free of the girl holding her, and runs to Madison, and wraps her arms around her as tight as possible.
The girl then phases over to Maine, with a stream of punches. She looks at Madison, tears falling down her cheeks. Maine finds it hard to breathe, but before she knows it she's being scratched and clawed by the girl.. She continues punching, and punching, nonstop. Maine tries to scream in agony, but the scream is quiet and strained. Maine tries to fight back, but she can't move.
Maine closes her eyes, but just as she does, the punching stops. She reopens her eyes, to find Madison standing between them. Her face fills with terror, and before she can think, Maine shoots across to Madison, grabbing her arm and running back to their dorm. The girl runs after them, but Maine gets into the dorm and shuts the door, locking it and moving anything heavy she can find infront of it. She hugs Madison, and everything goes black. She opens her eyes and there's sun shining on her.
There's a lady standing near her, who then walks out and returns with Madison. She's dizzy, but she makes it to Madison's arms, and starts crying. Madison holds her tightly.
"Hey, hey, what's wrong!?" Madison has a worried expression.
"Im so glad you're okay.." Maine strains, relieved. Madison looks at the lady, who then lightly grabs Maine and puts her back down on the bed.
"here, take this." The lady hands her some pills and a cup of water. Maine takes the pills and looks at Madison.
"Are you okay?" Maine says, sounding concerned. "This morning when I woke up, you were cut and bruised all over, there was blood all over your sheets." Madison strains, about to cry.
"What?" Maine stutters. The girl then explains that she's a doctor and how Maine was severely dehydrated, and had lost a ton of blood when Madison had seen her, after she'd woke up. They'd asked some of the dorm members, but they said they had no idea what happened. Maine was told she had to stay in bed and heal for the next 2 weeks, in order to be able to safely go back to class. The next morning, Madison came in with a plate of absolutely delicious smelling food. She hands the plate to Maine, and sits down on the end of the bed. Maine looks at her plate, it has 2 waffles with a perfectly square butter, and syrup overflowing the top, it has an area of extra cheesy scrambled eggs, just the way she likes it, and 4 pieces of bacon, and on the last open spot, there's 2 muffins, one covered in gravy, and one with honey spilled in the middle.
Maine eats everything on the plate in record time. Then Madison hands her a glass of milk, and it's gone before she can blink. Madison looks at Maine astonished. Maine looks up at Madison, and smiles. Madison smiles back, sending butterflies to Maine's stomach. Later that day, Maine gets tired of laying in bed. The doctor comes in to check her vitals, and give her the daily medication, but once she leaves, Maine is up and finding her shoes.
Once she finds her shoes, she carefully sneaks out of the room. She leaves the hospital, and finds her way to a park, with a woodland trail. She sets a timer on her phone for an hour, then she has to go back. She starts to jog around the woodland path, and comes across a river. Maine gets out her phone to check how much time she has left, 45 minutes. She sits down on the river bank and stares at the water. She sees a small fish swim by, and then sees something shiny.
She reaches her hand into the water and shivers as the cold current flows around her wrist. She pull the shiny object out of the water and examines it closely. After about a minute of looking at the object, Maine determines that it is a gem. She takes a picture of it and does a reverse Google search. She finds it to be a very rare type of gem, a Tanzanite. She looks at all the beautiful colors and stores it in her pocket. She looks at the time left on her phone.
She has 40 minutes left. She gets up front the river and continues walking the path. Maine makes it to a rest area and looks at the time, 30 minutes left. She decides to head back to the hospital, but as she turns around, she notices a blossom tree, that wasn't there before, it has beautiful pink flowers, gorgeous sage green leaves, and breathtaking linen brown wood, nothing like she's ever seen before. She walks up to the tree and places her hand gently on the bark. As she rests her hand, the tree begins to rot and decay. Maine stares at the tree in horror as it disappears in front of her. A figure appears in front of her.
This figure giving her a dead stare, skin pale white, torn black dress, and mangled dark brunette hair. Her eyes, a glowing deep ocean blue. She stares at Maine, covering her smile. Maine tries backing away but trips, falling and hurting her wrist. The girl walks over to Maine slowly, and unbalanced. Maine looks to the girls legs, they're all cut and bruised, as if she'd been in the woods all her life. The girl leans down into Maines face, their faces just inches apart.
The girl uncovers her smile to reveal a huge cut, going from one ear through her mouth, to the other. Maine almost screams when she sees inside the girls mouth, rot on the insides of her cheeks. There were small cockroaches resting in the throat, and crawling around her mouth. The girl slowly rises her hand, holding her fingers under Maines jaw gently. Maine stares, unable to make a sound. The girl moves her hand down, caressing Maines jaw and throat. She grabs her throat, holding it tightly.
Maine fights to breathe, but she can't get a hold. Maine hears a voice, screaming her name, but she's losing consciousness. The' girl's smile grows sinister, as she tightens her grip. Maine fights, but without much strength. The girl loosens her grip, finally, and disappears along with the tree. Maine gets up and looks around. She checks her phone after finding no one there and looks at the time.
15 minutes left. Maine runs to get back to the hospital, she makes it just in time for her alarm to sound. As she walks in the door, she sees Madison arguing with a person at the desk.
"You don't understand, I know something is wrong. Just let me see her!" Madison almost yells in desperation.
"Ma'am, I assure you that Ms. Wood is ok."
"Go check on her or something, I know that she isn't!"
"We had a nurse check in on her an hour ago, at this moment she is resting."
"Just let me see her! Please!"
"Ma'am, we can not let you see her. We'll have a nurse check on her soon, but right now, you need to calm down."
"This is ridiculous! Why can't I see her!?"
"Ma'am. Please lower your voice. We can't let you see her until the next check-up, when Ms. Wood is done resting." At this moment, a nurse runs out to the front desk and screams that Maine went missing. The person calls security and calls for a lock down on the hospital, causing Madison to panic. Maine slips through everyone and pulls Madison into a nearby hall, that's surprisingly empty. (discontinued book. will delete when I figure out how to)
