Chapter 16 - Tournament

"Well, now that I've checked up on you, I'll leave. However just as I said before, don't try to rush things, take your time," said Allen.

Kyle nodded, 'I can't imagine how hard it must've been for him, losing everyone he knows, and being forced to even kill half of them himself,'

Kyle spent that day resting in bed and decided to continue training hard tomorrow, yet in a healthy way this time.

The next day, Kyle attended his general classes as usual at first, then attended the library, as there were no special classes.

Kyle spent the next month or so, training on the first floor then moved on to the second floor where he also scanned through the techniques, found some then trained them for the next month, then for the next two months he spent his time on the third and fourth floor.

Four months later, Kyle had multiple techniques mastered, 2 mana circulation techniques that helped in reducing the casting time, 3 movement techniques, 2 palm techniques, a kick technique, a sword technique, a spear technique, and a martial technique that includes all. Although Kyle took more time than he thought he would, he was still satisfied with such a result.

Although these techniques were still nothing compared to the technique he received from the Emperor, they were still some of the best techniques as Kyle spent 3 hours on each floor searching through them.

It was half the semester into the first year and the tournament was about to take place in the training grounds.

Everyone gathered in the training grounds looking serious, while some of the weaker participants looked scared.

A Professor appeared and said, "The tournament will now begin.

I will review some of the rules for those who didn't pay attention previously,

Each year has its own tournament,

There will be two tournaments for the second, third, and fourth years, one for the nobles and one for the commoners.

There will be three tournaments for the first years, one for the main families, one for the nobles, and one for the commoners,

Each round will take a day,

Artifacts are forbidden,

You fight until one of you is incapable of fighting anymore or surrenders,

Alchemists will be allowed to use puppets,

There will be multiple groups of Battle Royals, 16 groups to be exact, for the Nobles' and Commoners' tournaments,

The prize will be the permission to go to the Mystical Waterfall located in Sustead, a city 2 weeks away from the capital on a horse."

Everyone got excited when they heard the term 'Mystical Waterfall', the Mystical Waterfall is a waterfall located in the ancient city of Sustead that is home to the Dukedom of Nero, it is an ancient natural treasure mages use to temper their body, becoming much stronger.

In ancient times, it is said that one time a mage that had his body tempered by the Mystical Waterfall was able to withstand a meteor without any defense magic or mana imbued into his body.

The reason why alchemists are allowed to use puppets is that battle mages would dominate the tournament otherwise.

Battle mages fight with their hands and use spells, while alchemists fight mainly by using puppets, they imbue their magic into a puppet, making it remotely controllable, the puppet's strength depends on the mage's mana purity. Alchemists can make puppets that have a rank lower than them but cannot make puppets with ranks higher than them.

The advantage they have is that they can make a large number of them, without using a lot of mana meaning they can maintain them for a longer time.

The exception of the three tournaments is only applied to first years as the others don't have people from the main families among their ranks.

As the professor disappeared, an arena rose from the ground, this time with no surrounding auditorium for the audience to sit.

The arena was much larger than the one they had back when Professor Arthur was examining his students.

Each year's tournament was held at a different time, the first years go first, then the second years and so on.

Considering the number of people participating in the tournament of the main families, it won't have a battle royal.

An image of the tournament bracket was sent telepathically to the 6 students of the main families.

It was split into 8 rounds with The Crown Prince, Marco Chronos waiting in the final as the strongest one among them, and Henry Choros waiting in the semi-final as the second strongest.

In the round of 8, Davis Fotia was facing Katy Nero of the Duchy of Nero and Hunter Gi was facing Abbie Anemos from the Duchy of Anemos.

The tournament of the main families took place first.

Davis Fotia and Katy Nero came up to the arena at the same time, Davis took his battle stance while Katy summoned 5 puppets in front of her.

"Are you sure you want to use all 5 of them? Won't you run out of mana quickly?" asked Davis.

"Hmph, you don't need to worry about me, I have enough mana to even use 10 puppets as a mid-tier 3-circle," replied Katy, confident with the puppets she was training with since joining the Academy.

"Start!" announced the Professor.

Katy instantly backed away and sent her puppets attacking Davis, he shot multiple fireballs towards the puppets that were easily blocked by their water shields. Davis was sending fireballs endlessly, yet for some reason he didn't look focused on the puppets at all.

After a couple of minutes of them receiving fireballs, Katy ordered them to attack and corner Davis in fear of running out of mana, all 5 puppets attacked, each from a different direction while casting ice missiles in hopes of damaging him more, yet by the time the ice missiles came close to him they stopped.

"Looks like you know better than continuing the attack, Katy" said Davis looking confident, the crowd was confused why the missiles stopped until they looked at Katy's back where a fireball bigger than Katy herself was a hair's length away from burning her.

"Y-You bastard..."

"Give up, if that thing hits you it won't leave even ashes" replied Davis mocking her.

"Phew, I give up" said Katy bitter about such a loss, as she realized that if she had kept a puppet near her, Davis wouldn't have won so easily.

Kyle was impressed by such a use of magic and took notes as a fellow fire mage.
