The night enveloped us as we rode hard, the sound of hoofbeats echoing in the stillness. Gwendolyn and I said nothing, each lost in our own thoughts as we pushed our horses to their limits, putting as much distance between us and the city of Everlight as possible.
After what felt like hours of riding, we finally slowed our pace, the exhaustion of our escape catching up to us. We found a secluded spot in a dense forest, where we could rest and regroup without fear of being discovered. Dismounting from our horses, we tied them to a nearby tree and settled down on the forest floor, our backs against the rough bark.
Gwendolyn broke the silence first, her voice soft but determined. "We need to talk."
I nodded, knowing she still had more questions on her mind. "Alright then. Go ahead."
