Chapter 56 - [56] Adult takes all

Despite the chill in the evening air, beads of sweat trickled down my forehead as the raiders leered at us, their eyes reflecting a cocktail of malicious joy and unholy greed. The crude laughter of the raider chief echoed through the deserted streets, the sound grating against my nerves like broken glass.

"Three hot chicks and booze!" The chief's eyes roved over us, lingering over Cassidy, Hazuki, and Kaya in a way that made my skin crawl. "Quite the jackpot, isn't it, boys?" His statement was met with hoots and hollers from his men, the sound grating against the tense silence of the night.

I found my voice, pushing past the lump in my throat as I met his gaze. "You can have the booze. Let us go now." I said, hoping to appeal to whatever shred of humanity was left in him. His response was a bellowing laugh that echoed off the walls, a clear signal of his refusal.

"Only kids make choices, the adult takes all!" He sneered, his amusement apparent in his voice. The air was thick with tension, the palpable sense of danger in the air sending adrenaline coursing through my veins.

His next command hung in the air, a death knell signaling the end of our freedom. "Tie them up." He ordered, the raiders surrounding us moving to comply. Despite our situation, none of us put up a fight. We were outnumbered and outgunned. Resistance would be suicide.

Rough hands gripped our wrists, yanking us forward as the raiders bound our hands behind our backs. The ropes bit into our skin, their unforgiving grip an unrelenting reminder of our predicament. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation as we were herded together, helpless before our captors.

Our only saving grace was that the raiders were focused on securing us and not killing us. We were hostages, valuable for our perceived potential, for the pleasure of the booze we had collected, and for the twisted enjoyment of our captors.

The chill of the night crept into my bones as we stood there, bound and defenseless. I could feel the fear coursing through me, an undercurrent of terror that mirrored the foreboding darkness enveloping the town.

The raiders marched us into a building that was once a thriving tavern. Now, it was a dilapidated husk of its former self, serving as the sanctuary for these lawless men. Dim lights flickered overhead, casting an eerie glow on the scene before us. I could smell the musky scent of beer and sweat, mixed with the acrid sting of gunpowder and fear.

The place was teeming with raiders, their excited chatter filling the room. Each one was different, yet united in their callous brutality. Some were young men, barely out of their teens, while others were hardened veterans whose eyes spoke volumes of the horrors they had witnessed.

A man took center stage, his towering stature and imposing presence immediately commanding attention. His eyes held a certain gleam - a blend of arrogance and cruelty that sent a chill down my spine. This, I realized, was their leader.

"Tonight," he began, his voice booming across the room. His gaze swept over his followers, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "Tonight, we celebrate a victory!"

His announcement was met with deafening cheers, the raucous noise echoing throughout the tavern. I couldn't help but clench my fists, the ropes biting into my skin. The laughter, the cheers - it was all a twisted mockery of our predicament.

He raised his hand, instantly silencing the crowd. "Not only have we scored some fine liquor," he gestured towards the booze we had gathered, "but we've also bagged some enticing prizes."

His leer turned to us, his gaze raking over our bound forms. The lecherous grin on his face said it all, leaving a vile taste in my mouth. Cassidy shot him a defiant glare while Hazuki kept her gaze firmly on the floor. Kaya, despite her icy demeanor, had a storm brewing in her eyes. It gave me a small sense of reassurance. We weren't broken yet.

"Here's to a night of revelry!" He raised a bottle of liquor in a toast, his boisterous cheer echoed by his men. The room was filled with the sounds of merriment and wicked anticipation.

"I also got some entertainment for all you boys tonight!" the leader exclaimed. He nodded then one of the men released me from my hand cuffs and kicked me into a make shift fighting pit about 10ft deep. I had a mouthful of sand when I landed.

The pit was a spectacle of terror, a theatre of gladiatorial combat, dug crudely into the earth. Being kicked into it felt like a tumble into a nightmare. The fall was jarring and the sand filled my mouth, gritty and dry. The taste was a stark reminder of the bleak reality. I was now a pawn in their twisted game of amusement.

Every muscle in my body protested as I stood up, brushing the sand off my clothes. My eyes scanned the pit, taking in every detail. The walls of the pit were steep and unyielding, offering no chance of an easy escape. The crowd of raiders hovered above, their leering faces distorted by bloodlust and anticipation. The pit felt like a cauldron of dread, the raucous laughter and cruel jeers serving as a chilling overture to the impending horror.

The leader's grating voice echoed down into the pit. "Gentlemen, let's make things interesting, shall we?" His sickening grin was visible even from down here. He looked inordinately pleased, the promise of violence lighting up his eyes. With a dramatic wave of his hand, a gate on the other side of the pit swung open.

Q: What would you do in this situation if you were the MC?
