There was no reason for me to feel threatened by her. Finally, I spoke up. "Do you have a name?" My voice came out more parched than I'd expected. 

"Yes," she replied softly. 

I waited for her to elaborate. When she didn't, I prompted, "Would you care to share it?"

"No."

I nodded. If the Dagger of the Vorgan wanted to remain anonymous, so be it. 

"How did your companion manage to avoid Opal?" I inquired.

"She didn't. I gave her herbs to neutralize the poison, so she simply disregarded him."

I expected Opal to comment, but he remained silent. "How much was my life worth to you?"

"You'd be pleased to know."

She kept her gaze on me. The flickering candles cast intriguing shadows on her face, her hair, and even the contours of her body. I found myself swallowing hard.

Then she said, "We've returned the fee."
