Chapter 58 - THE ART OF FLOWER

Deep within the forest, a massive ball of vines continually undulates in place. The vines part, creating an opening as the bandits guide Megan and the others towards their base—a three-story house. Observing the scene, Megan see many tall flower trees, the bandits them leading them through the front door, revealing an interior filled with drunk men strewn across the floor. Climbing to the second floor, remnants of a recent celebration become apparent. At the far end, a man lies sprawled across a cluttered table. The bandits pay their respects to him, addressing him as the Boss. The Boss stirs from his slumber, noticing Megan and the others. He commends his men, stating that they've done well, ensuring the group's survival for another year. The Boss, with an unsettling touch to Megan's chin, declares their new purpose—to serve as entertainment. Once their entertainment value wanes, they will be reduced to mere resources. The Boss commands his men to escort Megan and the others to the cells in the basement. Megan raises her gaze upwards, detecting magical energy emanating from the third floor. There, an A-Star zombie woman lying in bed, her vine-like hair swaying as she gazes out of the window.

Meanwhile, Mai, Michael, and Adam reach the springs and begin tracking the footsteps of Megan and the others. As they enter the forest, Adam utilizes his heat vision, spotting a bandit attempting to conceal himself behind a rock. Quickly, Adam leaps over and subdues the bandit with a forceful stomp. However, before Adam can interrogate the bandit, he detects numerous heat signatures surrounding him. The pinned bandit seizes an opportunity, shooting Adam in the head, prompting a barrage of gunfire from the other dozen bandits. As the many bullets hits Adam, he collapses to the ground, and the bandit slowly crawls his way out. Michael quickly pushes Mai out of the way, allowing her to narrowly evade the incoming bullets. Employing his lightning powers, Michael zips through the forest, systematically incapacitating the bandits with electrifying kicks. To the crawling bandit's astonishment, Adam rises again, his wounds healing. Overwhelmed with fear, the bandit repeatedly fires at Adam, who summons his bat and deflecting the bullets with immense force. Seizing the moment, Mai kicks the bandit's gun away, aiming a pistol at him, demanding answers if he wishes to avoid the same fate as his comrades.

Shortly after, within the bandit's base, in the dimly lit basement, Megan, Ezzy, and Nakao find themselves confined in the same cell. Across from them, another woman, wearing a sorrowful expression, occupies a separate cell. Nakao anxiously inquires about their fate, the somber woman responds, revealing a grim outlook. She shares that, eventually, they will all face death. After enduring the men's exploitative activities for their amusement, the women will be killed for sustenance. She recounts witnessing numerous women before her subjected to abuse, ultimately becoming a source of food for these men. Megan draws a parallel between their current situation and Jarvis's dungeon cells, albeit emphasizing the heightened severity. In a determined stance, Ezzy rises and declares that they will not be fodder for these men. She discloses that her surrender was intentional, aimed at discovering the bandit's base to eliminate all of them. She asserts that individuals like these men do not deserve to live. Megan joins in Ezzy's sentiment, expressing that she's tired of being an entertainer for men. Together, they vow to ensure that these men no longer take people for amusement and sustenance. Ezzy underscores her commitment by showcasing her fire magic, conjuring a spark of flame at the tip of her finger. The woman in the adjacent cell chuckles, remarking that they are not the first magic users to arrive at this place. She dismisses their strength, warning that the boss's pet is formidable and poses a significant threat.

Megan acknowledges that she indeed sensed a potent magic presence on the third floor. Ezzy, exuding confidence, asserts that even if they may not be able to prevail, Adam will eventually arrive and secure victory for them. Nakao reassures the women that more formidable individuals are on their way to rescue them, urging her not to worry. However, the woman put her face between the bars and expresses a grim outlook. Dismissing the notion that the strength of those coming to their aid does not matters, she emphasizes that the Boss's pet will annihilate them all. She recounts the tragic fate of her husband, a powerful magic user who perished attempting to rescue her. He was transformed into one of the flower trees surrounding the house. Before their conversation could resume, a pair of drunk bandits enter the basement declaring that it's time for one of the captives to entertain them. The woman volunteers herself, expressing a desire to reunite with her deceased husband. The bandits, however, dismiss her, stating that they're solely interested in fresh meat. One of the bandits opens the cell and approaches Ezzy. As he touches Ezzy's shoulder, she warns him that she hasn't been fed for a while and advises against touching her, that it maybe too hot for him. Ignoring the warning, the bandit's arm catches fire, prompting him to scream in pain as the other bandit runs out of the basement.

Ezzy then approaches the burning bandit, seizing him by the throat as his body continues to combust in flames. Looking at the woman engulfed in flames, Ezzy inquires whether this level of magical power is sufficient to win. The woman shakes her head, asserting that it is not enough and will never be enough. She then breaks into tears, expressing the belief that they may have sealed their fate, anticipating the Boss's wrath. Suddenly, the basement door forcefully swings open, and a horde of bandits storms in armed with weapons. One of the bandits orders the others to kill Ezzy, and a machete-wielding bandit charges forward, slashing Ezzy's arm and causing it to bleed profusely. In response, Ezzy employs her hands to release flames that incinerate the attacking bandits. More bandits enter, firing their guns, but soon find themselves engulfed in flames, propelled out of the basement. Ezzy bursts out of the floor onto the first floor, unleashing fiery punches and dodging bullets while retaliating with fireballs. Amidst the chaos, the Boss calmly strolls through the flames, commanding everyone to stop. The bandits cease their attacks, providing Ezzy with an opportunity to shoot a fire blast at the Boss. However, numerous vines emerge from the windows, blocking the fire blast.

Ezzy observes the numerous vines on the first floor extinguishing the flames on the walls and floor. She attempts to burn the incoming vines as they continually wrap around her. The Boss enters, sarcastically applauding her efforts, and says that she's ruining his house too much. He then orders the vines to carry Ezzy outside. He gazes at the hole in the floor, finding Megan, Nakao, and the woman gone. Shortly after, Megan leads the others in an escape attempt, reaching the edge of the vine border. The woman expresses despair, believing they cannot escape, only to accept their fate. Kneeling, they hear approaching bandits. Despite Megan's efforts to find an exit, the vine walls seem impenetrable. Suddenly, a loud bang echoes from outside the vine sphere, followed by two more, causing the vines to shake and creating a rip in the walls. Adam emerges, landing in front of the bandits. Adam challenges them to attack if they wish to die, prompting the bandits to open fire. With a powerful swing of his bat, Adam causes all the bandits to explode in a shower of blood. Megan rushes to Adam, warning him to watch out. He then gets struck by a vine and crashes into a car.

The vines attempt to seal the breach in the vine sphere, but Michael utilizes his lightning powers to maintain the opening. Rune maneuvers his motorcycle into the vine sphere with Simbad and Jean riding at the back. As the bandits shoot their guns, Simbad concentrates and halts all the bullets in front of them with his magic, while Jean dismounts and quickly dispatches one of the bandits with his katana. Megan notices movement in the ground near her, and suddenly Kiren emerges from the soil, asserting that beneath the surface is much safer than staying above. Nakao leads the woman underground, prompting Megan to inquire when Kiren learned to dig so fast. Kiren reveals that he acquired this skill during the war. Armed with his hammer and shield, Kiren and Megan prepare for the impending confrontation. The Boss strides to the front of the house, declaring that it has been a while since they faced formidable foes and that they will all meet their end here. A multitude of vines emerges from the house, holding Ezzy captive. The boss declares that all magic users will transform into his beautiful flowers. Observing a green barrier enveloping Ezzy's body, the vines beneath her evolve into a tree, with red flowers blooming all around her. Approximately 50 bandits armed with guns emerge from the house, and the boss instructs his men to witness what he deems an amazing art show.

In an instant, Rune stands before the boss, swinging his butcher blade, but a vine quickly intercepts the strike. Amused, the boss asserts that no one will ever lay a hit on him. The vine lashes Rune in the chest, sending him crashing in front of Adam. Simbad and Jean also attempt to attack the boss, but the vines obstruct their efforts and repel them. Adam, sensing the challenge, mentions an A-Star zombie on the third floor of the house and determines to handle it himself. He leaps toward the building, with numerous vines emerging from the ground. Adam skillfully parries and deflects the vines as he presses forward, but hundreds more vines approach, presenting a formidable obstacle. Rune, Simbad, and Jean launch a coordinated attack on the boss, but the numerous vines adeptly block their attacks. Megan and Kiren position themselves beneath Ezzy's flower tree, attempting to sever it. However, the resilient tree continues to grow, resisting their attempts to inflict significant damage. The boss dismissively remarks that freeing Ezzy is futile, explaining that the flower tree will absorb all her magic powers in which will cause her body to dissolve into the core of the tree. Witnessing Ezzy's anguish, Megan charges towards the boss, joining the others in their assault and evading of vine attacks. Kiren passionately calls out Adam's name, encouraging him with renewed determination to overcome the mass of vines obstructing his path.

The boss, perturbed by Michael's distant roar, turns to witness Michael unleashing a torrent of lightning magic, enveloping the entire vine sphere and obliterating the surrounding vine sphere. Also he sees Megan and the others relentlessly closing in on him, the boss turns away to see Adam steadily advancing through the dense vines towards the third floor of the house. Suddenly, he sees Michael's lightning kick dangerously close to his face, and a vine narrowly manages to block the attack. Overwhelmed by the formidable power of the group, he declares aloud that their playtime is over, demanding that they all be transformed into art. Suddenly, numerous vines strike the back of Adam's body, propelling him upward. A green magic barrier envelops him, and the vines beneath him morph into a tree, adorned with many black flowers. Subsequently, the vines ensnare everyone else, turning them into flower trees — Rune adorned with silver flowers, Simbad surrounded by sunflowers, Jean enveloped in lavender, Michael encircled by bluebell flowers, Megan adorned with white flower roses, and Kiren displaying no flowers.

The boss stands in astonishment as his men cheer. Suddenly, the sound of an approaching vehicle catches their attention, as Nhia drives the RV towards the bandit's base. A metal plate unfolds from the side of the RV, expanding into a sizable armored wall. The RV windows open, revealing Mai and Nakao seated on attached chairs equipped with machine guns. They take their positions on the armor wall and open fire, eliminating some of the bandits. Nakao aims at the boss, but the vines quickly block the shots. The boss then realizes that the defending vines and those transforming the captives are draining substantial magic power, leaving them unable to attack the RV with the vines, the boss orders his men to eliminate everyone in the RV. Utilizing nearby cover and vines, the bandits advance, skillfully evading the onslaught of bullets from Mai and Nakao. Concerned for the safety of everyone, Nhia turns to see the despondent woman on the sofa. Determined to inspire hope, he reassures her that they will survive, emphasizing that this is not the end, as he still has many more things to accomplish in life. The woman redirects her attention towards Nhia, and unbeknownst to him, faint traces of Nhia's magic emanate from his mouth, touching the woman's hands. Every word that Nhia utters resonates with the woman's spirit. Motivated by his words, she stands up and declares that instead of passively waiting for death, she will fight until the very end to ensure her husband's death was not in vain. Nhia, taken aback by the swift change in her demeanor, watches as she grabs an assault rifle from the side of the RV and rushes out to eliminate a couple of bandits closing in on them. In surprise, Nhia expresses his admiration for the woman's newfound strength of will.

Meanwhile, the boss hears the sound of ripping vines emanating from Kiren's tree as he breaks free. Kiren loudly states that it's too bad that doesn't have enough magic for flower spell to work. Jumping off the tree with his shield and hammer, he strikes down nearby bandits and shields himself from the incoming bullets. The boss then sees white lights emerging from Megan's flower tree. Inside, Megan is enveloped in white magic, her eyes closed as she dreams of moments with the faceless man in the pillar of light. Witnessing herself in pain, a tattoo of magic appears on her left back, forming into a wing with a dark figure standing before her, and as she passes out, her dream concludes, only for her to wake up with the same magic wing tattoo on her left back. Suffering in pain, she screams as her left eye glows with white light. The flower tree holding Megan then bursts into white magic, showering the surroundings with white petals. Megan descends from the tree, announcing that her magic has finally returned since the war, causing the magic tattoo on her left back to vanish. The boss, perplexed by Megan's escape, inquires, and she admits she doesn't understand it herself but asserts that she will put an end to everything now. Summoning her sword, she charges towards the house, leaping onto numerous vines and ascending to the third level. Swinging her blade, she dismantles the walls, revealing the A-Star zombie sitting in bed. The boss shouts in panic. Megan slowly approaches the A-Star zombie, locking eyes with its pained expression reminiscent of her own when she was still with Sam. Meanwhile, Adam's upper body emerges from his flower tree, establishing eye contact with the A-Star zombie, creating a magical connection. Megan, caught in the midst, is shocked by this magical link and transported into the A-Star's memories.
