The blond immediately assumed a defensive stance, which was mostly what he had been doing since the start of the competition. No one had once seen him initiate an attack.
David swung his staff in a wide arc, creating an offensive barrier which his opponent was forced to duck, but that was not the end. David continued forward with a relentless barrage of attacks, hitting everywhere his opponent moved to dodge.
The blond was holding up quite well, the strikes from David were quite heavy but he managed to parry and dodge his attacks. He was not willing to let his guard down again since the previous hit David had landed.
The blond made sure to evade any attack that seemed too heavy instead of going for the block, as blocking the heavy attacks would sap at his strength.
The duo had already completed a circle round the stage, the blond kid knew he couldn't keep on dodging David's attack, defense only got one so far. A slight slip up in the defense and it will all be over in the twinkling of an eye.
He began to block the attacks half-heartedly. He stopped each attack just in the nick of time, making it seem making it seem like he was getting tired.
The excitement from the crowd was rising once again, with every hit the blond barely blocked, the arena was filled with gasps and exclamations.
The blond kept on the act, drawing David in with each strike. This time, he went for the head, swinging his staff in a short arc to land a quick hit.
His opponent raised his hand just before the staff struck his head, blocking the strike. In a quick movement, David withdrew his staff and thrust it again at his stomach.
The blond sidestepped and grabbed the staff. One of the tonfas slowly fell to the floor and his free hand held the staff, with his free hand he pulled David in and swung his other hand with the tonfa down.
The thick wooden weapon connected with David's shoulder and the impact sent one knee to the floor.
The shock registered on David's face, reflected off the faces of the audience. While David was on one knee, his opponent brought his knee forward aiming to hit David in the face.
David quickly got over his shock, released his staff and rolled away from the knee before it made contact with his face. He couldn't believe what had just happened.
His opponent was still full of life, he had baited him and he had fallen for it, David tilted his head slightly to the side, looking directly into the glass box.
He could see his father, Mathieu Dupont glowering at him. Knowing his son's capabilities, he expected him to emerge victorious in the fight, not to bend a knee in the presence of thousands of viewers.
David was now enraged, he was without a weapon but he was not going to let that stop him. His opponent on the other hand was not going to let this opportunity go to waste.
He let his other tonfa fall to the floor and held on to David's staff. He spun the staff, moving it from one hand to another before stabbing it onto the floor.
He stood across from David, waiting for him to make the first move. David was enraged now, but he was past the stage of letting his anger get the better of him. He could not let his father down, he was the pride of the Dupont family and he intended to keep it that way.
He calmly analyzed the situation and approached his opponent slowly before closing the distance between them. One of the tonfas lay on the floor just behind the blonde kid.
David ran toward his opponent. Mid-way, he had to wonder whether the loose weapon was another trap to lure him in. He suddenly stopped in his tracks
The crowd was lost in confusion, the amateur minds in the audience could not understand what was going on down there.
Throwing all caution, David ran again, there was no way he was going to be able to block all the attacks from the staff with just his hands. Doing that will afford him more damage than he intended to take.
Even if it was a trap, he was fully aware now and he was willing to take his chances, he would be ready for anything that was thrown at him.
When he got within range, the blond swung at him but he slid on the floor, evading both the attack and his opponent. He grabbed the single tonfa that lay on the floor and jumped to his feet.
He felt thankful it was not a trap but he was sure he could have dealt with it even if it was a trap. Holding the end of the tonfa like it was a hammer he moved for the attack.
The blond knew that David was not going to take his chances and go for the staff that wasn't in his possession, and that would probably leave him at a disadvantage.
He counted what had just happened as a possibility but he was not counting on it, not everyone was as versatile as him when it came to weapons, seeing the way David wielded the tonfa was enough confirmation but this was the possibility he least favored.
He thought David would instead attempt to go at him with his bare hands, which would have given him the upper hand but now he was unsure of how the battle would play out.
Even if the DuPont was not a versatile weapon user, he definitely would not be harmless with a weapon he could not wield.
David brought down the tonfa like it was a hammer, attacking his opponent continuously without giving him a moment to think.
The blond expertly blocked the attacks, the way the staff was always there to block every attack, it felt like it was he who had picked the staff in the first place
