"Are you okay?" he asked, noticing her mood seemed a bit off.
"Yes, I am fine," she replied with a forced smile. His curiosity deepened, sensing something was amiss.
"Are you aware that you are pregnant?" After a brief silence, he asked, suspecting this might be the reason for her strange behavior.
"Yes, I know." Her response was so reluctant and quiet that he felt a wave of anxiety. Did she not want to carry his child? Was she unprepared for motherhood?
"Damien, it's not what you are thinking. I'm..." She trailed off as she noticed he had picked up on her unease, prompting him to step closer.
"You are what?" He asked softly.
"Afraid," she whispered, her eyes filling with tears.
