Charlotte felt a pang of ache in her chest, as he said those words. Yes, she was over him and didn't care about him anymore but saying those words bluntly, made her uncomfortable.
Embarrassed, she stuttered, "You…I….Thanks," and bent down her head to continue what she was eating. She should have known it wasn't more than a random concern, why would she think he made an exception for her?
She was going to be leaving in two months, so it was best to avoid being attached to Dave anyway.
Absent-mindedly, she shook her head to ward off the disturbing thoughts, deciding it was best to not think about him at all.
Dave's fists were clenched under the table, as he watched the hurtful look on Charlotte's face. Convincing himself that he was hurting her for her sake, was the only way to overcome his burning feelings for her.
