Chereads / Lord of Radiance / Chapter 2 - Alec, the Wizard

Chapter 2 - Alec, the Wizard

On the damp west bank of Moonlight Lake, a castle loomed faintly in the mist. The environment here is not suitable for mortals and wizard apprentices to reside for a long time. Only first level wizards can ignore the damage of fog to their bodies and settle here, using the runic array built by several generations of wizards in the family to control the entire oasis.

Wrapped in a cloak, Basari, who looked more like a ghost than a person, recited a spell and carefully walked through the thick mist. Several times, he felt something brush past him, but when he subconsciously looked over, he could see that it seemed like a ripple of cold wind in the mist.

However, it was not a wind, but an invisible servant belonging to the wizard Alec. This kind of magical image is a precious commodity brought by the caravan from outside the desert, made by rune masters using precious materials. The Abbas family buys one every ten years with their accumulated wealth, and only wizards can control it.

It is invisible but physical, capable of wandering and guarding in the fog, easily defeating an ordinary wizard apprentice or a fully armed company.

However, Basari did not care about them. Growing up here, he was not the first time to visit Grandpa Alec, and he had long been accustomed to these killing machines.

Not long after, Basari had already approached the main entrance of the castle, and saw that there was no door in the position that should have been the door, but an extremely thick mist, like a curtain in a theater, separating the castle from the outside world.

Two huge knights golem, one left and one right, are guarding the entrance.

Both magic golem seem to be carved from a sparkling black gemstone, and even in the mist, the surface luster can be seen. The one on the left is holding a two handed hammer, heavily armored, with a lion head, making a forward roar and preparing to charge. The one on the right holds a large shield and a short spear, with a helmet on his head. In the dark shadow of the helmet, there is also a one eyed one that twinkles with red light, standing solemnly and taking a cautious stance.

When Basari came here, he felt that the originally scarce elements in the air suddenly became very rich. He could not help but take a few breaths, as if a stranded fish was back in the water, and his spirit was lifted.

If he could meditate here for years, it would only take him four years to become a true wizard. Besides, considering his physical and mental limitations, it is impossible to fully utilize these elemental energies.

But this is simply impossible.

If Moonlight Lake is the natural core of the oasis, then the castle is an artificial core jointly shaped by several generations of wizards from the Abbas family. This involves the safety of the entire oasis and uses many rune techniques that have been completely lost in the desert two centuries later. If there is damage here, it is likely to be irreparable.

Therefore, apart from the wizard Alec himself, even favored family geniuses like Basari are prohibited from approaching the castle.

Even if it weren't for Alec's permission, those invisible servants would have attacked him and killed him on the spot.

With the protection of these invisible servants, even if a first level wizard comes, there is no chance to sneak up on the castle and launch a surprise attack.

"Alec's dear grandson's son, Basari, has been ordered to visit his most respected elder. Please allow me to come over."

He stood outside the castle gate and saluted respectfully towards the two giant magic golem ahead.

The golem with a lion's head bent down first, its huge tusked mouth resting above his reveal, and then sniffed hard. Basari felt as if his soul was about to be sucked away.

Then he heard the lion statue say, "It's Basari."

The lion golem withdrew its head, and then the one eyed golem gazed carefully at him with its one eye, then hummed, "Safe."

Afterwards, the two magic golem shouted together, "Please come in!"

The two magic golem each reached out with one hand and grabbed the center of the fog door, pulling it apart like a curtain. Behind this layer of mist, the interior was filled with a more intense mist, rather than the imagined castle.

Then the vast white mist in front of Basari surged, revealing a safe passage for one person to walk.

Upon seeing this, Basari quickly bowed his hand and thanked him, "Thank you."

These two magic golem are not creatures, but they are also not ordinary magic golem. They contain two brainwashed trolls, who consider themselves knights, with their brains as the core. They have undergone multiple modifications and each has different supernatural abilities.

Basari did not delay either, but immediately walked in, seeing a vast expanse of white on all sides, while the ground below was like water, and there was no other path to take except for this foggy path.

Basari followed the path all the way and finally reached the end of the mist, with no further way to go around.

Although there was no way to go, he was not in a hurry, but waited quietly for a few seconds.

Quickly, a huge one eyed, as big as a wheel, emerged from the mist, and beneath it was an equally huge mouth.

The eye looked at Basari, then retracted, and then an old man in a red robe came out. His Skin fold, his stature was short, and his face had no facial features, but only one eye. He leaned on a thick wooden staff with one hand, shaped like a big question mark. The other hand reached out and pinched Basari's face, as if confirming whether he was his grandson's son. In addition to being one eyed, there is also a pair of red bat wings growing behind him, which are very huge.

He is the father of Basari's grandfather, the amiable first level wizard Alec.

Basari didn't dare to look much at Alec's appearance. After seeing him, he immediately bowed deeply and said, "Your dearest descendant greets you and wishes you a long and knowledgeable life."

Strictly speaking, Basari is a direct descendant of Alec's younger brother, but all of Alec's brothers have died of old age, and even his son and most of his son's brothers have died of old age. Only Alec is still alive, and he has become everyone's grandfather.

"You're here, my dear grandson Basari."

Alec spoke, and his voice came from all directions, as if the person in front of him was not Alec, but a phantom.

"Yes, due to the call of the family elders, I come to your side."

Basari didn't think much, just respectfully answered Alec's question.

"Do you know what this castle is?"

Alec turned his slender neck, his one eye occupying most of his face staring unblinking at Basari, as if waiting for his answer.

"This is Abbas Castle, the most important root of the family."

Although Basari felt a suffocating pressure from Alec, he knew that this respected grandfather had no malice towards him. He was just so powerful that he instinctively felt a heavy sense of danger brought by Alec, as if facing a terrifying storm on an unshielded grassland, even if it was still far away, it was suffocating.

"You're right, this is the root of the family."

Alec has high expectations for Basari.

The Abbas family, starting with its founder, Jolik Abbas, has always had first level wizards in power, which allowed it to develop to its current scale in just three centuries.

But starting a hundred years ago, the Abbas family seemed to have been abandoned by fate, and for a whole century after Alec, no new first level wizards were born.

For the Abbas family, this is very dangerous.

A wizarding family is most afraid of the generational decline of wizard inheritance.

Once the Abbas family loses the protection of a first level wizard, let alone continue to develop and expand its family size. Even the oasis it currently possesses cannot be maintained and will inevitably be occupied by other wizards.

Perhaps relying on the wealth and magical golem accumulated over three centuries, the Abbas family can withstand the invasion of a first level wizard, but what if two or even three wizards join forces to attack the oasis?

At that time, the Abbas family will perish, men will be killed, women and children will be sold as slaves to unknown corners of the desert, as slaves are always a popular commodity in the desert.

So, under the guidance of Alec, the development of the Abbas family has been stagnant in recent years, afraid of accumulating too much wealth, which will bring unstoppable disasters to the Abbas family after his fall.

However, this is only an emergency measure, and the real solution to the problem is still for the Abbas family to give birth to a new first level of wizard before he dies of old age.

As long as there are first level wizards sitting in oasis, with the help of castles, magic golem, and dozens of wizard apprentices, even if there will be three first level wizards attacking, and they will only be defeated one by one.

Originally, Alec had placed his hope on his grandchildren, and even made up his mind that if no one in the Abbas family had been promoted to the foundation building period before his fall, he would rather give most of the wealth of Oasis to Byron Academy in exchange for the protection of the Abbas family by the first level wizards of Byron Academy.

Although the Abbas family may not be as wealthy as royal families in many countries, their descendants can still live a prosperous and peaceful life, and even many years later, they can give birth to a first level wizard who can find a way to regain an oasis or at least own a city.

But now, Alec realized that perhaps he should change his mind.

Given Basari's current potential, the likelihood of becoming a wizard is much higher than that of his uncles, as long as he is given more than a decade.

He carefully looked at the young man standing in front of him, and his handsome appearance was not his main focus. What he valued was the calm attitude that the young man showed in front of him, the calm attitude that he knew he was looking at him and could still face him calmly.

Of course, as the father of Basari's grandfather, even if he is satisfied in his heart, he will not reveal it to Basari, to avoid committing a great crime of pride.

Therefore, although he was extremely happy in his heart, he did not show any signs. Thanks to only one eye on his face, he did not show any emote.

Alec's height is much shorter than that of Basari, but his neck stretches out like a large snake, hanging down from above, staring at Basari and asking, "Do you know the reason I called you here?"

"I don't know. "Basari replied honestly.

Alec's neck was coiled, and his crimson one eyed man was examining Basari.

"According to the rules, once a wizard apprentice reaches the age of twenty, they must serve the family for a period of time, either manage the town or represent the family's interests and travel far away before returning to continue enjoying the resources provided by the family and learning the knowledge passed down by the family."

The deafening and muffled sound came from all directions, making Basari's suffocate.

"However, your situation is special. Although you are only seventeen years old, you are already able to experience the mysteries of the real world through meditation. Although the elemental strength accumulated in your body is somewhat scarce, that is not a problem."

"Your current meditation progress has greatly exceeded your progress in accumulating elemental power, so for the next five years, you only need to focus on accumulating elemental power without worrying about whether your own spirit can control the elements."

Alec is a low-level wizard, but still possesses a majesty far beyond the limits of human endurance. Even if he had no malice towards Barcelona, it still made him tremble.

"So I have decided to do something special and let you start working for the family ahead of time. This is also beneficial for your experience and also for you."
