Chapter 5 - Heartbreaks and promises

"Evelyn Dawson ends up in hospital"

"Evelyn Dawson the heir of Lake city fainted at the new year's party"

"William Adler dies at 25 from a gunshot wound"

"William Adler the son of Dawson's long trusted worker murdered in cold blood"

" 'he was my best friend' says the young millionaire"

"Tune in to find out more about the relation of Millionaire Evelyn Dawson and her worker's son William Adler"

In a span of a night Evelyn had once again become a trending topic of the social media. Articles were published all around about her. Some ridiculed her, some felt sorry for her and some wondered the reason for William's death. Looks like it took one's best friend to die to become a hot topic on social media.

Evelyn, now changed from her hospital gown scrolled through her phone reading all the articles. Each one with a new picture of her. Some even had a picture of her in her New years party gown but none had the picture of her fainting.

"Well the money cam to use after all" she mumbled to herself continuing to scroll. Her modeled pictures were sold in replacement of her embarrassing fall. But that wasn't what she was looking for. She needed a headstart to start her search for whoever…..did that to william. And what better than the over speculating media. But the money had been too useful; there was no information regarding it either.

The door to her room slightly cracked open and she looked up to see Aunt Lily walking in her room. Evelyn's eyes turned to her window, the sky it was morning already, the sky was still a dark shade of gray as if reminiscing with her. Evelyn scooted to the side pulling out her earbuds allowing her aunt space to sit. The older woman took a spot on the corner of the bed silently, sending a refreshing smile in her niece's way.She was dressed for the day in her teal blue tshirt and hazel brown hair gently caressing her shoulder, she looked young. Evelyn studied her features, her angular nose and her catlike eyes that matched hers, her fair skin, her sharp jaw, she often caught herself finding resemblance of her mother in her face.

"How are you feeling?" she asked, comfortingly assessing Evelyn's condition.

"I am perfectly fine" Evelyn reassured, leaving the part where part of her body ached from yesterday's event and sleepless nights.

Lily slightly rolled her eyes, easily catching onto her niece's lies. "When do you plan to get out of your room?" she questioned, concerned with Evelyn's condition. "You need to get out and get some fresh air" she scolded.

"You sound like you are my mother?" Evelyn squinted, retorting, hugging her pillow closer.

"And I am her sister brat" she playfully slapped the girl's feet. "Show some respect" she again scolded but Evelyn could see the lightness in her features. Sometimes she urged to be like her. She idolized her Aunt lily. She liked how carefree and responsible she was at the same time. And even after going through so much how she had love in her. Something Evelyn rarely had for people around her.

"I will go out today" she sighed, not sure if she would but she didn't want to worry the woman in front of her. "I just don't know when" she hid her face in her pillow.

"What do you plan to do once you are outside?"

"Solve WIlliam's case" she mumbled into the pillow but loud enough for her aunt to hear her. She waited for her response. When she received none she looked up from her pillow asking. "Aren't you going to tell me it's a bad idea?'

"I know you won't stop if I tell you to, just be careful" she came closer, placing a soft kiss on Evelyn's forehead.

'Your daughter is going to be jealous' Evelyn joked as Lily moved away.

Lily scoffed "she'll be fine she's just going through puberty." Evelyn let out a laugh at the statement.

"I want to see you at the breakfast table in ten minutes" she ordered walking out of the door ignoring Evelyn's groaning behind her.

Evelyn walked down the stairs dressed in a black turtleneck tucked in black jeans, hair roughly pulled up in a high ponytail. Dark circles, a permanent feature standing out on her face.

"Oh look who's up"

"Is her depressive mode gone already"

"I expected her to stay cooped up in her room for at least a month more"

"That would have made this house more peaceful as well"

The whispers traveled up to Eveyn. Gritting her teeth she ignored all the thoughts that threatened to swallow her up. She reached the end of the staircase and everyone silenced looking up at her fake smiles plastering over their faces.

"You are up" It was her aunt Zatana who spoke up first filling juice in her son Adam's glass who paid no heed to his mother staring at his phone.

"Would you like me to ask someone to set up your breakfast? '' ALia reached out to her. "Look at my child she has decreased to half the weight" If she couldn't hear their whispers she would hav mistaken their pretense for love.

"It's fine" she brushed off her "I am going to ask nana….." she stopped hearing herself all the events flowing in her head. She had grown up calling Miss Adler nana, and it hit her that after all of this she hadn't once gone to look check up on William's parents, too dissolved in her own despair.

"Mr and Mrs Adler are leaving back for their town" Uncle Harvard spoke from the corner of the table, eyes trained on his newspaper.

"They are leaving?" she questioned again even though having perfectly heard him the first time.

"Here your coffee" Lily appeared right beside Evelyn who looked like she had seen a ghost her eyes confused processing and face baffled.

"When are they leaving?" Evelyn turned to her uncle when she heard sounds from outside.

"Honey I have loaded your stuff in the car" she easily recognized Mr Adler's rough old voice and rushed out of the mansion straight into the parking lot, following their sound.

The old man fifty years dragged the suitcase from the two storey small house like servant's quarter around the backyard. He looked up at Evelyn's frozen posture and stopped. He was used to seeing Evelyn often in their house along with William and had been reluctant at first to see the millionaire in their house but then he had warmed up to teh girl. Now he stood perplexed unsure how to address the girl.

"Let me help you" Evelyn spoke softly taking the suitcase from his hand.

"No it's fine dear" he tried to stop her.

Before Evelyn could resist someone called her name. A soft voice. Evelyn swiveled around to face Nana with a small bag in her hand. The woman about the same age as the man looked at her with her wrinkled eyes. She suddenly looked like a decade older and tired, her face swollen and eyes slightly red. She pulled Evelyn in a hug, surprising the girl. Evely wrapped her arms around the woman's petite body feeling the comfort flowing into her. It should have been the other way around. Evelyn comforting her, not her.

She patted Evelyn's back, stepping away caressing the girl's hair. Nana's eyes watered and Evelyn couldn't find words to console her.

Evelyn took in a breath and held the woman's hand encasing them on her own. "I promise to you I would bring justice to him" she swallowed the blob of tears that was on the verge of flowing out. "He was very important to me too"

"He was my only son" the woman squeaked out in a small voice, tears flowing through her eyes. "And I am your daughter as well" Evelyn let out her own filling with water. She looked up at the man. "If you ever need anything you can always contact me and I will handle everything related to William you can leave without worry." The man patted her back as well, thanking her and pulling his wife along with him. With one last goodbye she watched them walk farther away towards the gate. Standing in the backyard that held countless memories of her. The backyard that once used to be her comfort place was now like another nightmare.

Wiping away her eyes Evelyn walked towards the direction of the mansion when another car stopped in the driveway and she heard her eldest Uncle David.

"What is he being so stubborn for?" he grumbled to someone. Evelyn stopped in her tracks listening closer to the conversation.

"Does he not know the power we have over the police department as well?" he scolded someone and Evelyn's ears perked up further. "What is the name of the detective?" he questioned abc on the phone. "Ethan Ashford," he repeated to himself. Evelyn didn't hear further; the voice had faded inside.
