Chapter 4 - 3

The nose stuck to the tile, Gabriel was observing the scene, motionless, gauge in hand, trying to know whom he have to do. To take the ascendancy, not to be overwhelmed. Always have the initiative.

A priori, a single vehicle has just stopped with a screech of tires less than 20 meters from the cabin. The cloud of dust which falls in plume in the wake of the Land Cruiser limits the visibility, while a sooty aurora struggles to reach the undergrowth.

Two guys finally get out of the 4X4. The driver, between two ages, slightly stooped, wears a cap screwed on his head, to the glory of MOTUL, while the passenger, gets out of his seat by contorting his bloated body. Both are armed. The fat man has a revolver sticking out of his underwear and the other one has an AK47 slung over his shoulder.

A frown appear on Gabriel's face when they pull a young woman out of the back seat before throwing her to the ground, without mercy. Skinny and pale, the captive immediately gets up despite the ties that bind her wrists and raises her chin in defiance. Her long black hair is gathered in a simple ponytail, even if rebellious wicks bar her blood-stained forehead. Half of her face is obscured by thick tape. You don't need to know more to guess what will happen next.

Settlement of accounts, summary execution.

"What do you think, huh?" Gabriel whisper glancing at Buck, who hasn't moved. He just tilts his wolfish head to the side as if he's deferring to his sole decision.

Gabriel sigh. He knows very well that meddling in other people's business only brings trouble. This was true before, it is even more true today. This nightmare era leaves little room for altruism. And living another day often depends on one's ability to determine priorities coldly, even if the choices this imposes go against our good old morals.

Does it still have a any legitimacy in a world devoid of rules and principles?

But Gabriel couldn't force himself to constantly muzzle what's left of his humanity. Too bad. At least try to save this girl, prevent a murder or die trying. He sighed again.
