Chapter 170 - A Side Hustle

Their training with Anna had ended for the day and they had all left the school. Kyle, Smith and Kevin had all left together, heading in the direction of where they now seemed to spend most of their time.

Ever since the world penitentiary in the Thradon district was destroyed, the most dangerous criminals in the human race had escaped whilst some had died in the collapse of the building when Maron, a six-tailed wert, destroyed it.

Jake had gone missing after the penitentiary was destroyed and Kyle, Smith, Kevin, Sky, Nikki, Diane and the others had searched for him but they could not find him.

A couple of weeks after the prisoners had escaped from the world penitentiary, they began breaking into other penitentiaries, enabling the prisoners in those penitentiaries to escape as well.

The soldiers and clinsers had taken in some of the escaped convicts and had been locking them up in a makeshift penitentiary for the time being while a stronger and more reinforced penitentiary was being constructed.

The new penitentiary that was being constructed kept getting destroyed by the werts at times and at other times, by the escaped convicts.

It was as though the convicts and the werts were somehow working together to stop the penitentiary from ever being created but that would be ludicrous. Humans and werts working together. An impossibility is what everyone would presume it was.

Kyle had suggested to Smith and Kevin that they help in capturing the convicts one at a time and handing them over to the clinsers.

At first it seemed like a stupid suggestion to Kevin because the convicts that had escaped were no ordinary criminals and they had gone on to break others out of penitentiaries.

"That's insane!" Kevin had said when Kyle suggested it to them. "Are you out of your damn mind?! Have you got a death wish or something?"

"Will you calm down?" Kyle replied. "We don't have to go after the ones that escaped from the world penitentiary. They broke others out too so we can go after those guys that they broke out and slowly work our way up."

"That still sounds like a madman talking!" Kevin said. "Kyle, look man. I get that you're strong and all that, but don't get yourself killed because you're trying to prove something."

"That's where you're wrong Kevin." Kyle said. "I'm not strong and that's the point. Right now I can kill a three-tailed wert by myself and that is pathetic to say the least. A four-tailed wert would give me trouble but I think I can take it. I need to get stronger and I need to do it quickly. This is a way for us to push ourselves and make our magic evolve. I'm doing this with or without you guys. I just told you so you can come if you want to."

"I'll come with you." Smith said to Kyle.

"Smith you can't be serious." Kevin said.

"Kyle is as strong as he is yet still thinks he's weak." Smith said. "After Jake, he is probably the strongest out of all of us and sure he might be able to take on a four-tailed wert but can he kill it? Who knows how many tails the strongest wert out there has. And if we don't get strong enough, we're only going to hold Jake back."

"What are you talking about? Jake's not even here. What if he's dead in a ditch somewhere?"

"You really think someone's going to find Jake dead in a ditch somewhere?" Kyle asked. "You don't have to come Kevin."

"Shit! Screw it. I'm in." Kevin said after thinking about what Smith and Kyle had just said. He knew they were right and he also didn't want to get left behind.

The three of them had been monitoring the movements of some of the convicts since then and they had been fighting them one at a time. If it was a convict that they felt only one of them could fight, one person would fight the convict while the others would watch out for other convicts that might show up.

Using that method, Kyle, Kevin and Smith had been handing in convicts to the clinsers even after the clinsers adviced them not to. They started fighting stronger convicts in hopes of working their way up to convicts from the world penitentiary and soon enough, their magic finally evolved.

Kyle's poison secretion magic was the first magical ability to evolve out of the three of them. He felt his body get stronger when his magic evolved and being someone with an already bulky stature, he was a bit surprised when he saw that his magic evolution had caused him to get slightly larger.

He wondered why that had happened but he brought it all down to the fact that his magic evolution only made him stronger and a bigger size also increases his strength.

Smith's healing magic and Kevin's possession magic had also evolved and it turned out that fighting the convicts was just what they needed to become stronger.

The convicts were also wreaking havoc in the five districts. Breaking into people's homes, robbing stores and vandalizing properties so as Kevin, Kyle and Smith handed in each convict to the clinsers the districts had one less convict that will terrorize the people.

After leaving school, the three of them had headed to their usual location and were casually waiting for a convict to wander away from the others. They did this a lot so they were already used to the waiting. Maybe except Kevin.

"This is still annoying." Kevin said.

"Be quiet." Kyle replied. "They'll hear you."

"Yeah Kevin, shut up." Smith said.

They had gotten some information about the convicts from the clinsers to know who to absolutely stay away from and the ones they could go after. The stronger the convict they handed in, the more credits they received from the clinsers and now they were going after a stronger convict.

"He's moving." Kyle said to the others.

The convicts had taken control of a highrise building that was abandoned and in shambles. It had no windows, no doors, lots of rubble on the inside and around it as well.

Inside the building could be seen from the outside which is where Kyle, Smith and Kevin currently were. They had seen the person they were after move from the storey he was on and as they waited they saw him leave the highrise building.

"Let's go." Kyle said and went after the convict with Kevin and Smith following him from behind.
