The night fell, and Kalen was still practicing with the spirit energy. Although he had no idea if the energy was mana, he speculated that it was most likely.
He also discovered some interesting things, such as the fact that the spirit's body was made of water.
Like the elementals, the spirits were related to the natural elements. But at the same time, the spirit was not like the elementals he had met in the cavern of fireflies.
Unlike the elementals, the spirit had a definite body and form, it was not just an orb of ethereal light.
Another thing he discovered was that the spirit, like him, had a kind of ability. It could change its body according to Kalen's imagination.
Kalen could imagine any not too complex geometric shape and the spirit would try to replicate it. Another thing he had discovered was that the spirit could somehow react to his thoughts.
And the last and perhaps most important thing Kalen discovered was how his own ability worked.
Energy manipulation basically allowed him to use the spirit's ability, but in his own body. But this had many limitations, perhaps because Kalen did not yet know how to use both the spirit's mana and aura properly, or simply because he lacked practice.
Either way, the only thing he could do was slightly alter a finger as if it were water instead of flesh and blood.
It looked a bit strange... even grotesque, as his finger also changed color to the color of the spirit. But it was something interesting, and if he learned how to use it, it could be quite useful.
But that would take time, something Kalen didn't have at the moment. Even if he worked for Adaire, if he finished his daily chores quickly, he could train in the evening, just like today, but only if he managed to finish them.
But it was late, and the spirit's mana was running low, so Kalen decided to stop and continue later. For now, he would rest and recover before his next tasks.
With that, he entered the mansion and made his way to Jerome's office, where Jerome was waiting for him.
"You have already been assigned your next tasks"
Kalen frowned.
"What tasks?"
Jerome handed him back the clipboard he had given him earlier that day with the written requests.
Kalen took it and looked at it.
There were several requests that were highlighted in green, while others were highlighted in red.
Kalen looked at Jerome, not quite understanding.
"I'm supposed to fulfil the ones marked green?"
Jerome nodded.
"Exactly, I've come to the conclusion that with your current abilities you are more than capable of fulfilling these requests... the ones in red, we'll take care of them"
Kalen reread some of the requests and sighed inwardly.
There were some that were just plain stupid and probably asked for by people with a lot of money and little desire to work.
Others might be more difficult, but nothing impossible, but the red ones... were out of his hands. Even to the point of being... unethical.
Anyway, Kalen said goodbye to Jerome and went to his room before falling asleep.
When dawn broke the next morning, Kalen changed back into his elegant attire and went about his business within the mansion until midday, when he left the mansion to head into the city for the first time.
Kalen closed the doors of the mansion and looked around.
It was all forest, and the city was almost two hours away, so Kalen started his journey... but he didn't want to walk for two hours, so he let aura flow from his core to his legs, strengthening them.
He unbuttoned one of the buttons on his shirt and began to walk.
It wasn't long before he was off into the forest. All was quiet, but Kalen paid no attention to his surroundings.
He was more focused on not stumbling and maintaining his speed. He had never used his aura to run before, so it was something completely new to him and required him to concentrate on letting his aura flow into his legs.
Running several kilometers at the speed of an Olympic athlete was not easy.
Almost 40 minutes passed, and Kalen saw some large walls in the distance, so he decided to stop and rest before entering the city.
He rested for at least five minutes, fixing his suit, until he approached the large gate in the wall.
There were two men standing guard, and when Kalen tried to pass through, they just gave him a look without stopping or asking anything.
Kalen didn't pay any attention to the looks either, and kept walking, pulling out a piece of paper a little further into the city and unfolding it before reading it.
'Which one should I start with?'
The paper was where the requests were written down, it also seemed to be a relic, as it showed the distance in meters from where the person who had made the request was.
Knowing which way to go, Kalen began to walk through the city. This was very different from the cities he knew on Earth, where the buildings were hundreds of stories high and the streets wide enough for cars to pass.
In contrast, this city was ancient, with smaller streets where the only vehicles were carriages pulled by hair.
It was almost a medieval city, the only difference being that there was a large island floating in the air where a large and majestic castle stood.
Kalen had spent a few minutes admiring the great floating castle, it was simply breathtaking.
There was nothing like it on earth. Most of the ancient monuments had been destroyed over time by wars or natural disasters.
It wasn't like there were floating islands on Earth either.
Apart from the sights, Kalen began to fulfil the next requests he had.
Sometimes he had to help different people with complicated tasks, among many other things that were not that important or interesting.
When Kalen had completed his fifth request, he moved on to the next one.
This one showed that the person he was looking for was several hundred meters away from where he was, and there were so many streets and alleys that Kalen kept getting lost.
'Arghh... this is annoying'
Kalen stopped and looked around, seeing that no one was watching, he sent aura into his legs and flexed them before jumping onto the roof of a nearby building.
Kalen had to hold on to the roof to keep from falling to the ground as the jump was not enough, but he managed to get onto the roof of the building successfully.
He looked around and got a better look at the area he was in. The building wasn't that big, so there were other bigger things blocking his view, but it was something.
Checking the paper again, Kalen began running across the roofs of the buildings as he approached the person in question.
All went well at first, Kalen got closer and closer to the person, but it wasn't until he heard screams that he stopped.
On the ground, several men in shining armor were looking at him.
'Huh? Did I do something?'
Kalen didn't understand why they were shouting at him, but he figured it was better to go down than run away, so he gathered aura back into his legs and jumped to the ground.
When the men saw that he had gone down, he approached him with an angry expression.
"Do you know what you're doing!?"
Kalen was surprised, he hadn't expected the man in front of him to be so irritated.
"Hmmm... Running?"
The man took a few more steps towards Kalen.
"It's illegal to run on rooftops!"
Kalen opened his mouth after taking it all in.
'Ahh...'
The man wanted to put his hand on Kalen's shoulder to stop him, but out of pure reaction, Kalen deflected the man's hand to the side and stepped back.
"Are you resisting?!"
Kalen frowned but calmed down, he needed to maintain his calm image and not get upset so he just smiled at the man.
"I'm sorry, it's just that I prefer to keep my uniform clean"
Kalen regretted it as soon as he said it, as the man took it as an insult and moved his hand to the hilt of his sword at his waist.
'Ahh... shit'
To his luck, however, a deep voice could be heard at the bottom of the street.
"What's going on?"
The man who was about to draw his sword stopped and looked at the other man approaching.
"Ah! Captain!"
The man's captain made his way through the crowd that was beginning to gather, and when he arrived, he looked at Kalen and recognized him as Kalen recognized him.
"It's you"
The captain was the man who had gone to the mansion to make a request. Kalen looked at the paper in his hand and realized that it was indeed the person he was looking for.
"You are..." Kalen looked at the captain's name on the paper. "Barret Roresk"
The man nodded.
"You're here about the petition?"
Kalen nodded.
"Good, follow me"
The man who had detained Kalen saw his captain overlooking Kalen's crime and couldn't help but protest.
"But Captain, this person has committed a crime!"
Barret turned and looked at his soldier and then at Kalen.
"This is a warning, don't run across the roofs of the city again or you'll be in trouble"
Kalen was silent for a few seconds and nodded.
"Understood... sorry for the inconvenience"
The man grunted, but then sighed and accepted the events before leaving with his patrol.
Barret looked at Kalen and then continued walking.
"Let's continue"
Kalen nodded again and followed the man in silence.
