Chapter 64 - Back Against the Wall

New York was a good position for both sides of this war to gain a hold of. Strategically, it was too ideal for neither omnic nor human to just abandon.

For the omnics, it would help them reinforce any forces they had in the North, as well as basically control the Eastern coasts of the United States. Plus, it would be a major blow to the morale of humanity, as New York was a very renown state. For it to fall, it would show that any state or country could too.

For humans, it not only gave them a good place to hold the Eastern side of the United States, but give hope to those who once called it home. It also allowed them to open another front and attack from below Canada, which increased their chances of taking the lands lost.

Anubis was not omniscient; therefore his attention wasn't everywhere. But his attention was where it mattered, and New York definitely mattered. Therefore, he looked with disdain as his Ravager, his new creation whose sole purpose was to outmaneuver any human, was outsmarted time and time again by the one human he needed either captured or dead.

Ignoring the losses he was taking in the Middle East, he decided that this human has been eluding him for far too long. A new string of orders enters the heads of many Ravagers, who stop what they're doing immediately and redirect their forces towards Central New York City.

Some humans, who just were in gunfights with omnics, looked with confusion as the Bastions just ignored them altogether. A few, who were on death's door, breathed relief as they were just spared by some unknown reason. All the while, Shawn, and his company marched through Lincoln Tunnel, ignorant of the upcoming danger.

Shawn POV:

We eased through the tunnels once more, as a sudden bad feeling started to creep up on me. As if to confirm my suspicions, Reinhardt says to me,

"It's quiet. Too quiet."

I nod my head in agreement. Although it's been only a couple of minutes, we legit basically just embarrassed them and they knew our location, but there was absolutely no response. Maybe my silent prayer worked. I wonder what god answered. As if I could be that stupid and ignore the signs. It was always quiet in the eye of the hurricane.

Everyone else seemed to feel the same way, as they were cautious about everything, creeping slowly around the tunnel to not draw any attention to themselves as we neared the exit. That being the case, a rumble in the distance didn't go unnoticed, putting everyone on edge and high alert.

Knowing that this signaled another omnic attack, we immediately decide to form a barricade in front of us with nearby hovercars in preparation of the impending attack. The Trump supporters let us take the lead, falling behind us and opting to watch our flank.

Just as the last of the supporters fell back, in the distance, we could see the red glint from the eyes of the Bastions through the dust. No calls need to be made, as everyone opens fire. The air was filled with the sound of gunfire and the screeching of metal on metal.

My visor revealed the movement of Bastions even through the dust, allowing me to see their sheer numbers, and I look past the initial first wave sent at us and shudder. Five Huntsmen walks intimidatingly behind all the Bastions. Was this every omnic in New York?

Reinhardt joins the offensive, loudly grunting as he swings his hammer up, sending a fire strike that burns through the ranks of the Bastions. The soldiers prioritize the omnics closest to them, knowing by now that they can't afford to waste too much time on a single target, or they'll be overwhelmed.

Unfortunately, due to their sheer numbers, the gaps in their lines quickly get filled with other Bastions as they slowly but menacingly march towards us. A Huntsman walks to the entrance of the tunnel, pushing the hovercars out of its way as it bolts itself in place.

Taking aim at us, it rapidly fires bullets our way, making Reinhardt take the defensive, raising his shield. Two more Huntsman take their place alongside it, following suit.

In exasperation, I use my visor to calculate the distance to take them down and find that their position is too great for any of our weapons to make an impact. Our only option right now is to retreat and find another way across the Hudson River.

As soon as I turn to make the call, a Trumpist who was watching the other exit on our flank comes running to us.

"There's hundreds of them on our flank! They got us trapped like were in traffic on the way to the gym to ride the stationary bike!"

The news hits me like a brick. We...I had gotten outmaneuvered. Time slows down as my brain tries to work out a way for us to escape. In the front lines, I can hear Reinhardt yell out slowly,

"Barrier is falling!"

My eyes turn to the flank and see the Trumpists fighting against the waves of approaching Bastions on the flank. My brain couldn't find any openings, any plans for escape for even myself. With no other options, I sit on the ground in disbelief as my mind goes into turmoil.

'What could I have done better? Am I really going to die again helping Trump supporters?'

Reinhardt's barrier breaks, and he turns his back to the onslaught of bullets, as they bounce off his armor, and he ducks behind cover. A soldier comes next to me, grabbing me by the shoulders hard as he yells in my face,

"What are we going to do?"

I don't answer him, as I don't have it. There's nothing we can do. Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, my mind which was searching for any answers comes up with only one solution. One that I was avoiding.

Softly chuckling at the irony, I decide that if I'm going to die anyway, I might as well let him be the one to die this time.

The soldiers next to me skin start to tingle, and their eyes drift from the battle to me. They stare in shock as electricity sparks across my body as I close my eyes and focus on the bioelectricity within myself and enter the Galvanic State.

My final thought before all goes black is, 'Since you're so good, show me how you can get out of this situation.'
