Chapter 109 - Medical Extraordinaire

Shawn POV:

I walked the busy hallways of the temporary Overwatch headquarters, listlessly. I was aware that the events two days ago, were constantly on my mind, and were a damper on my mood, but there was little I could do about that. What I needed was a distraction, but while waiting for either Gabriel or Adawe to assign me to a new mission, I was just left to my thoughts. Thankfully, I wouldn't have to wait another day.

"Private Rose, she's ready for you." A soldier comes saluting to me, to which I give a nod back at him in understanding. So, I was meeting with the head woman herself once again. I guess that means it's really important then.

I head to the meeting room as I know that she's not here at the moment and will be her projection. Having a seat at the table, her image flicks into view.

"Good morning Private Rose." She says in her usual serious tone.

"Madame Adawe." I respond, as there was nothing good about this morning.

"I've read your report on your mission in Japan, and I'd first like to offer my condolences. I know what it's like to lose your mentor." She says, and I can feel that she spoke the truth. Nevertheless, I didn't want to speak about it with her of all people, so I merely nodded my head.

"Then, I'd like to thank you for answering questions that were raised on those that read the report. I, for one, never imagined magic to actually exist. Your experience has helped us shed some light on areas that need to be thoroughly explored should we be faced with a similar situation." It was understandable, magic wasn't common, and I doubt any would run into it.

"Now, for the matter at hand. You've shown time and again, that you are capable of leadership and handling yourself in these dark times. You were long overdue a promotion. Therefore, you are now, Medical Specialist Shawn Rose."

Medical Specialist? Oh, I see what she did. Of course, she had already advised me that I wasn't going to have a major leading role in Overwatch. But I couldn't remain a Private, so she focused on my medical aspect in order to boost my ranking. Plus, if I knew what I did with that title, it would give me the authority of that almost kin to a Corporal, but without most of the responsibilities of one. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I like that.

"Thanks Madame Adawe, what would this role entail?" I question.

"You will be given your own medical team to train and order. Your team will coordinate with others on missions where heavy causalities are expected like retaking lost cities or shutting down omniums. As far as medical expertise is concerned, you will be the highest ranking there. However, there is one condition. There is a report of your activity in London, where you have a special way of healing. You are no longer permitted to do so until given authority by a Second Lieutenant or higher rank."

And there goes the bullshit I was waiting for. I could get mad and protest, but she was a smart woman. She had her reasons, and I was willing to hear them before I made my own decisions. I would hate to leave Overwatch before getting the chance to meet Ana, but the option of taking the nanites from her, in the future was there.

"I'm sure you're going to explain why I won't use my best healing ability?" I question.

Her expression changes, looking at me like I'm the fool. "Are you serious? Your healing abilities are no doubt the best this world has ever seen. Soldiers saved by you to this day, have been reported to be more resilient than the average person. Their stamina has increased, along with their thinking capacity. You're making mini super soldiers. Not to mention that you basically cured cancer over there as well."

Oh, I did not know that. Hearing this, it sounds almost as if they had increased bioelectricity. Judging from how she was describing it, no one has realized this was the case. Meaning they weren't aware of their own bioelectricity and capable of manipulating it. So, instead, I was jumpstarting their bioelectric activity. Bringing this into a new perspective, I could see why I would need approval before doing it again. However, I know their approval will only be towards someone of the higher ranks or of importance getting hurt.

"I understand. But you're going to try to deny me one of my most important aspects of myself. So, it's either you get all of me, or none. I will say that in the future, I will refrain from healing like that as a default and do everything in my power to save a person without using it. I know you plan on using it to only save those in higher ranks, or influential figures. So, I will do so at my discretion." I respond back to her.

Silence fills the room as Adawe looks at me. Seeing that I wasn't budging, she sighs. "Why is it that everything has to be difficult with you?" She asks.

"Don't want to make your job too easy." I respond.

Rolling her eyes she sits back in her chair. "Very well. But if the situation gets out of hand, I will not hesitate to step in to quell the panic before it starts. Do I make myself clear?" She says in a serious tone.

"Very." I respond.

She nods and her image flickers out. I stand and consider what just happened for a moment. Somehow, it actually improved my mood. In fact, I was looking forward to teaching them my self-taught medical skills. My very own little proteges.
